Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Thread (12 Viewers)

"I am happy to work with Republicans on this issue where there's common ground, but you almost had me murdered 3 weeks ago so you can sit this one out," the New York congresswoman wrote in a tweet directed at the Texas senator Thursday. "Happy to work w/ almost any other GOP that aren't trying to get me killed. In the meantime if you want to help, you can resign."

remember what she said a couple of weeks ago

"It’s one thing to have differentiating opinions but it’s another thing entirely to just say things that are false," she continued. "So that’s something that we’re looking into."

Cruz put out a hit on Cortez??  If so he should be prosecuted.

For what it's worth, google seems to point me to this place as the place that created the AOC merch:  https://fiimarketing.com/made-in-usa-merchandise/

That's not the same place you linked to.  It seems like you're the one spreading bogus claims.
Now you're hung up on a distinction without a difference.
Well this hardly seems worth continuing but I don't view it that way.  It seems like there are two separate criticisms of AOC here:

1) The sweatshirts on her website are too expensive.  As pointed out, this is a dumb criticism because the sweatshirts are not being sold at cost, they are being sold as a fundraiser.

2) She lied and said that her sweatshirts cost more to produce than other candidates.  This doesn't seem like a very serious criticism (even if it is a lie, it doesn't strike me as a particularly important one).  But I agree that when politicians lie, that lie should be exposed and it is right to be critical of it.  So I tried to do some googling to figure out if she was actually lying.

Cost more to produce because they were made in America.   To which you replied "both could be true" not knowing that all candidates have there merch made in America.

My advice, avoid defending her at all.

People actually support this woman?

This forum has been full of things like “Trump gets 2 scoops of ice cream “ for the last 4 yrs. this isn’t new
Come on man...you know this is a bit off of what has really happened.  The 2 scoops thing was mocked for being ridiculous, thats it.  You know that.  You know its been full of actual serious criticism of him and his actions, words, and policies.

There are plenty of things to criticize AOC for that are serious...this sweatshirt thing is not really one of them.

Not just made in America.  Made in America by people making a "living wage."

And of course I'll continue to defend her against ridiculous attacks.
Link to any of those shops whose employees are unable to live if that's the hill you want to die on.

The company you linked to for AOC, they are in Rhode Island where the minimum wage is still only $11.

She lied.

I'm waiting for the Twitter fact check and warning in this post as being untrue.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday that she was willing to work with Republicans to investigate the stock trading app Robinhood, but not Sen. Ted Cruz, who she accused of attempted murder for his role in encouraging the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The stuff costs more than market value because they are intended to be campaign contributions.  You guys come up with weird stuff to criticize.
Is that true because that’s not what she said?  In addition, her explanation that it cost more because it’s made by unionized American workers fails basic economics.  If foods and services all cost more when it can made cheaper elsewhere the purchasing power of working poor suffers.  Real income is not nominal wages but purchasing power.

"Living wage" doesn't mean "able to live."

Just because a state has an $11 minimum wage doesn't mean every employer pays that amount.

I don't know if she lied or not.  It seems like you don't either.

Saying "clothes made by union workers cost more" does not "fail basic economics."

Yes, we have a lot of bizarre threads but this one has to be top-5.  200+ pages about AOC???
Blame Twitter..Cortez is like Trump and can`t stop.  Both would be better off if their tweets had a 24 hour hold on them before posting.  Well hopefully at least Cortez would.  Trump would still post regardless.

She justified the $58 sweat shirt saying it’s made by unionized us workers thus it cost more then a normal sweatshirt.  If all goods and services increase then the purchasing power decreases thus people earning $15 per hour are worst off then before.  I’ll give a real life example.  My state increase the minimum wage from $10.10 to $15 over a 4 year timeframe.  Great news for the low income folks of our state.  I own several daycares so the resulting minimum wage increases results in 35% tuition hike.  If I’m seeing that then roughly the same for grocery stores, fast food etc.  Goods and service increase the same or not more thus the buying power decreases.

Why didn’t she say sweatshirt money really a campaign donation?.

I just read that she said "You are trying to get me killed" to Cruz  Maybe it was just hyperbole.
well she also said many, many were almost assassinated so ... kinda gotta believe she's serious

of course, not many many were assassinated and Cruz didn't try to get her murdered - all of that is fake and false and she's weaponizing words and continuing the hate and division and that she's called multiple times for uprising and acts .... i mean is anyone faker than she is right now ?

just my observations

  It says it if you go to the website to purchase the clothes.  I don’t know exactly why she didn’t say it in the specific instance you’re talking about.

And nothing you said about purchasing power calls her original statement into question.

My point is her response shows she lacks a basic understanding on economics.

This isn't a situation where only one can be true.  I imagine the merch does cost them more to produce for those reasons.  But it doesn't cost $58.  The campaign charges more than the sweatshirt is worth as a fundraiser.  This is not unusual in politics or charity or anything.  If you get a tote bag from NPR for donating $100, it's not because the tote bag is worth $100.  The idea that raising money for your campaign is somehow improper is just bizarre, considering the huge amount of time every single member of Congress spends raising money for their campaigns.

I would much rather have my Congressperson raise money by offering catchy sweatshirts at inflated prices than have her raise money by calling up rich donors and begging like most politicians do.
I'm getting Big Bird on the phone stat.  :hot:

:lmao:   Be careful of the whiplash.

In terms of generating enthusiasm and using social media I can see it.  But in a lot of other ways they seem like complete opposites.
Exactly.  Tweeting before thinking.  Making outlandish statements to pander to their bases.  Just on opposite sides of the aisle.

Even if this were true, does one pushing hate and the other pushing compassion for those less fortunate make a difference or no? They're both equally bad?

She sure struggled on Twitch last night. Was curious about her thoughts but she spent 15 minutes screwing with the focus and then we couldn’t hear her guests.
