00's Mixtape Draft (1 Viewer)

Another thanks to NV and all the drafters for a great draft

Can't wait to hear the mixes

Mine should be up in the next couple of days

Glad we did this

Kept me sane during a crazy time at work for me

In fact, sitting here exhausted at work right now rocking out to my mix

I'm looking forward to finally checking out the best of the best of some bands that I really mean to listen to more, but never do. First ones that come to mind are The Hold Steady and The National. I've heard maybe 2 of their songs each? Definitely need to listen to more.

Yep, big ups to NV and everyone else for a smooth draft. I'm sick and there's a pile of work waiting for me, but this really helped.

FIRST

Abrantes & The Secret of The '00ze:

The Futureheads, "Hounds of Love" (in case the copy in the mix doesn't work for ya)
tried it twice and im only getting songs 7, 14, 16 and 20Profs worked
####. I'll redo the whole thing in a bit.
All of it worked for me except the one on zshare, which worked there. Just finishing listening to it and there were some surprises for me. Nine songs got my lowest rating(1 star), and another 8 got only 2 stars (not awful but not my style), but the list ended strong with Secret Machines and this particular LCD song. Not something I would "have to listen to", but it's kind of sticky and hypnotizing and draws you in. Two four star songs to start off (Dino and Trail) and the aforementioned songs were solid 3s. Two other 3s were in the mix. This is all a first listen while doing Workers Comp paperwork and other nonsense so it's still a first impression.

Ratings are just to my taste, they mean nothing other than how much I'll play them. Ones only get ones so I know I've listened and didn't like. They go bye bye. Thanks for the picks.

Unbiased album review says my album is high-quality:

Album review: "I'm Sorry Young Man, There's No Skating Here: A Love Story in 4 Acts" by Steve Tasker

"ISYM,TNSH:ALSi4A is an unbelievable masterpiece." - New York Times

Steve Tasker, a veteran of the underground road-trip mixtape series, and the creator of such tapes as "####ty Europop Dance Music 08" and "All New Order, All the Time" cold-cocks the mixtape scene with his latest jaunt - "I'm Sorry Young Man, There's No Skating Here: A Love Story in 4 Acts". The mixtape, which is already receiving Grammy buzz and was named Rolling Stone's album of the month, features an eclectic mix of hip-hop, indie rock, and just general trash music. "Well, when we started," said Tasker, "I had literally no theme in mind. But as we went on, I started weaving this sensational love story - boy meets girl, the two #### like stoned rabbits, they both cheat on one another, and then get back together. It's the ultimate story of redemption."

The album's 4 acts each feature a different theme in the twisting plot. The story begins with The Roots' eerie "Phrenthrow" before delving into the story itself with Lupe Fiasco's "Kick, Push". The story's protagonist meets and falls in love with a girl at the skateboard park. As the two become closer and closer, Tasker's lighthearted and upbeat selections - such as Feist's "Mushaboom (Postal Service Remix)" and Vampire Weekend's "M79" - keep the mood fun and fresh. Act II, designed to signify the physical relationship that comes with, in his own words, "stoned rabbits #######", features a nice mix of house, new wave, and electropop sounds. But as the act dwindles, the eccentric sounds give way to more gloomy, ominous tracks, including Ladytron's "Destroy Everything You Touch" and Crystal Castles' "Untrust Us".

After a brief interlude, the story picks back up once again, with our two lovers splitting up after a fight at the shoreline. A love pentagon has formed and has torn the two apart. Tasker manages to keep the usually emo song themes upbeat with his lyrical choices - "I could've sworn that one and one make two...but it's 5!" (Architecture in Helsinki) or "Oh, #######it, I think I've lost you" (Hot Hot Heat). The third act gets increasingly more depressing, headed up by his first two draft picks, but Act IV finishes the mixtape on an upbeat note. Highlighted by a pair of Sigur Ros tracks and the Bloc Party classic "Banquet", the act is meant to signify the reunion of our two protagonists.

Personally, in our opinion, we don't think the theme or the song choices make any sense. But the album has a cool name, and the songs are ok. For a theme that was completely thrown together this afternoon, we have no choice but to give it two thumbs up.

I think I have that one. :bag:

Some that I'd try to work into a mix in addition to some that were picked...

K'naan - Wavin' Flag

Polkastra - Apolkalypse Now

The Knux - Bang Bang

KT Tunstall - Black Horse and Cherry Tree

Finger Eleven - Paralyzer

Finger Eleven - One Thing

Sarah McLachlan - Answer

Metallica - Cyanide

M.I.A. - Galang

Audioslave - Moth

Paul Oakenfold - Starry Eyed Surprise

The Black Keys - Just Couldn't Tie Me Down

Beats Antique - Beauty Beats

The Crystal Method w/ LMFAO - Sine Language

Tiesto - Adagio for Strings

Turnbull ACs - Disco Bomber

Soggy Bottom Boys - I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow

Dub Pistols - Official Chemical

Glen Hansard/Marketa Irglova - Falling Slowly

MC 900 Ft Jesus - The City Sleeps

Trick Turner - Friends and Family

The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So

She Swings, She Sways - What I Wouldn't Do

Joanne Shaw Taylor - White Sugar

Looking at what was taken in this draft, though, I don't think I fit in with the theme of the drafters here.

:lmao: Glad you came back with those suggestions you had earlier. I was curious. Lots of great tunes there, though most of them would've taken some work to fit. I was really into Oakenfold, Van Dyk, Tiesto and those guys for a while.

Considered Paul Oakenfold's "Starry Eyed Surprise". Probably would've fit well with my mix theme, but I didn't have a theme until this afternoon.

Jokes about "Trapped in The Closet" aside, I'm surprised no one took "Ignition (Remix)". felt like you couldn't go anywhere without hearing it for a while.

Guess there's still time for pill or OH to take it. :lmao:

Need some advice: what's the preferred method of making your final mix? (I just signed up for MediaFire, which Abrantes used for his upload.)
If you're under 200mb, mediafire is the best one out there. but you don't need to sign up for anything there -- it's free and no signin required. fastest up and down times. No restrictions on "You just DL'd something, wait 94 minutes". Another decent one is Megaupload (file sizes up to 1GB is nice). For the love of god, don't use rapidshare.

 "Sandstorm" still gets me ####### amped, though (pretty easy, given that it's Wanderlei Silva's fight entrance song).

Finished Prof's first run, and despite getting a 5 star for Hurt, it didn't rate as well as Abrantes. Part of it comes from me being a bit very picky when it comes to rap/hip hop. So the results are a bit skewed. Even songs from guys I like in general like Common and QTip didn't strike me well. 10 one star selections. A 4 for Ms Jackson and 5 for Hurt. 3 stars (and therefore bands I intend to delve into) for Airborn Toxic and Cormega. Didn't necessarily like the 2 star rated Gnarls, Ali, Avetts, or Nutini but intend to listen to more as there are strains of stuff I like and it just may be that this particular fare from them didn't strike me. But hey, if I find one band out of a playlist it's a success in the long run. As always, thanks for the picks.

I never saw a best of 00's thread, but a glance at some of these playlists leads me to believe that this is the definitive thread.

I look forward to checking out some of these mixes to find some new tunes. good stuff. :excited:

Finished UH's first run, and despite getting a 5 star for Hurt, it didn't rate as well as Abrantes.
UH or Prof
Oops, Prof. Not sure how that got mixed up.
