2016 Green Bay Packers thread (3 Viewers)

he's taken. I've been talking him up in these forums for like 3 or 4 weeks now. he's great. he's better than Kuhn was at the same point in his career. same size as Mike Alstott was.

Ripkowski's gonna bring the FB back
So, what, ... we cant share his hairy, husky, bulling his way straight forward virility?  Damn dude, that's kinda selfish.

That stat about not having an RB rushing Td all year is crazy and very indicative of the failure that the roster has been.  I doubt you ever see them go into a season as ill prepared at RB ever again.

Both sides of the ball helped each other last night.

Finally we had sustained drives.  Even when they did not turn into scores...they ate up clock and got out towards midfield rather than punting from deep in their own territory.

This helped the play like they wanted to some...it still wasn't pretty with the secondary or with the ILBs hurt and Perry should get smacked in the head for those 2 offsides that made 3rd downs much easier for them.

And who would have thought they would be able to eat up that much clock in the 4th quarter?

For all the issues they have had, and still had last night they played an almost perfect game.  That defense is still struggling and I was most irritated by some of the poor missed tackled and off side penalties on the defense.  That has to improve.  The offense was brilliant.  I love the idea of not huddling up and running more of hurry up offense and letting Rodgers pick them apart and then mix in some lasers down field to keep them off guard.  Screw the running game when you don't have the right personnel and Rodgers is accurate.  The controlled the game clock better this way.  I have been saying for a good part of the season that Adams is the most improved guy.  Hopefully he can avoid the drops because he is really the only WR that has been able to consistently get open.  If his hands are sound he is soon to be, if not already, their top WR option.  Sure Jordy is a sure handed savvy vet but he just hasn't been able to get open like the past.  They still have a chance if that offense can play like last night.  The defense needs to step up some more yet and get rid of those missed tackles and bad penalties.

Last night felt good.  Even though I know a short winning streak that doesn't get them to the playoffs with a team ready to compete would be bad long term on both draft position and schedule I can't help myself, I want to win. I maintain hope that they can find themselves, sometimes against all reason.  This is something I learned in the 70's and 80's.  After th e60's I was spoiled.  I may be again, but I always hope for the best.

Randall and Rollins missed some plays last night, but they made some as well.  given that they are just back, and likely rusty, I give them a Mulligan.  That said I want the learning curve to accelerate out of control.

We are going to need Ryan back at inside L.B. now, not in a week or two.

I was hoping to see a bit more out of Christian Michael.  Maybe next week.

I still can't believe some of the decisions Starks is making.  Several times a game he seems to completely miss the open lane with blockers for the closing lane overloaded with defenders.  He needs to find his mojo, or better yet find Barry Sanders' mojo.

Aaron, Olivia on top this week.  Let that hammy heal.  No standing wheelbarrow into helicopter this week.

Agree on Starks...that one screen that went for 5 yards.  He cut outside when the blocks had the inside sealed off likely for a much bigger gain and he ran right to where the waiting free man was.  Just bad.

Zero sacks allowed on 40+ passing plays is impressive against the Philly defense. GB's offensive line has delivered some godly pass pro games this year and it's good to see Spriggs getting into the rotation. I think Tretter is officially expendable as he's about equal to Linsley.

My opinion on Randall remains unchanged.  He made one play I remember, and then two plays later allowed a first down anyway.  I know I'm hard on him but he's now almost two seasons in.  He has very little ball awareness.  And on that play where Clay was nipping at Wentz's heels for about 20 yards, if you watch it again you see can see Wentz school Randall mid-run.  He's not good.  Not physical and will be a liability unless he can vastly improve all facets of his game.  But he is a warm body so at least he's on the field.

This defense needs to get some turnovers this weekend against the Texans.  They simply aren't good enough to go toe-to-toe.  They need some picks.

Tretter is the depth...not expendable at all imo.

I would love to keep Tretter (and banish Barclay forever) but I don't know if they have the luxury of keeping him and re-signing Lang as well.
I agree. With how they treated Sitton I could see Lang being next to go... that would be a mistake. If we do get Wolf next season I would imagine we would lock Lang up.

How good is Clay Matthews really?  My brother mentioned while watching Denver/KC that if Houston and Vonn Miller are 99s, that makes Matthews about a 75 when healthy.  I guess he's been the tallest midget on a mediocre D for a long time but is he really worth the 15MM cap hit next year?

Over the past 3.5 seasons (50 starts) he's gotten a grand total of 29 sacks.  So averaging about a sack every other game plus change.  Is a 9 sack guy really worth 15MM per season?  I'm not so sure.  Obviously he got stuck playing inside because Thompson hasn't properly stocked the shelves at LB so that hurts him some.  But is he getting by on name recognition at this point?

The guy plays so reckless/hard he gets hurt so often  (or is coming off of HGH so injuries are more common). Out of 8 seasons only 3 were a full 16 games. 2 were 15 game seasons so I am not sure what the deal was with those 1 games. But still. The guy can't stay healthy. I have no idea why his hamstrings are so fragile. If you watch a youtube of his work outs he can bring his knee to his face... plenty of flexibility.

I think most of it is due to the fact that the defense has been improperly staffed the last 4-5 seasons, forcing Clay to play out of position. His best seasons were when he had a dangerous weapon playing in front of him.

So yes, he is getting by more based on his name and early results but I think he is worth it when used appropriately and when healthy

I've been saying for years that this d needs another true talent.  Maybe what they need is a new Alpha dog altogether.  A defense with clay as the second best player might have some teeth.  Put Clay and Miller together and you have the makings of a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

I think it would be pretty tough to get rid of Clay with Peppers most likely gone or at least no longer a key player.  Nick Perry has had some moments but outside of Clay and Perry they wouldn't have much pass rush.  They certainly need some help in that area.

True...will be interesting to see how they treat Lang.  Like Brew said about Sitton...will this injury now and him being out for whatever hurt that?  He does not seem to have the injury history that Sitton had though.

Id also rather keep Lang over Tretter...Spriggs can be the depth...and Tretter may be the luxury we can't afford.

Half of those have probably been against the Bears.  It's that beautiful head of hair that has taken him so far.

He missed Wentz badly too.  I think he made one play all night and allowed probably 4 first downs on his weak ### tackles.  He's needed as a body but he's still quite a liability.
He was second on the team in tackles last night. Long way off from making just one play all night. But don't let the facts get in the way of your Randall-hate.

If the rumors are true about Sitton's release there was a lot more to his release than injuries, salary, etc. And his release was well-deserved. And how has Sitton been doing this year?

Speaking of, remember all the criticism when Sitton was released? Who was he replaced by? I can't remember his name now. Hmmmm. Must be playing so well you don't even hear his name.

And remember the criticism of the Packers releasing Kuhn? Seems like they improved there.

And remember the criticism of the Packers taking Adams over Allen Robinson? Still would prefer Robinson but that gap has shrunk considerably.

And the criticism of the Packers dumping Masthay and signing Schum? And the criticism of Schum early on? He's been punting very well lately.

what were the Sitton rumors? I understood why and it obviously paid off

I was fine getting rid of Kuhn, they had drafted ripkowski.

was fine with cutting masthay

adams I'd stillrather have Robinson. he's not doing well because of his qb and offensive play calling. adams has grown on me however

With all the complaining about the defense, one might lose sight of the fact they held the Eagles to 13 points last night. Not a great offense I know, but it was the Eagles lowest scoring game of the season so far, and they've played some tough defenses.

Yeah well it kind of pads your stats when you allow receivers to catch 20 yards passes on 2nd and 9 backed up on their own 2.  Did you see him whiff on Wentz.  It was laughable.

And remember when they picked Datone Jones over DeAndre Hopkins?  Let's see who has a better game this weekend.

Cherry pick much?

Sitton's been injured.

His replacement has led GB to what in terms of rushing yards? tied for a league worst in rushing tds. Rodgers still gets pressured often.

When Adams gets 1400 yards then you can make this outrageous claim. I mean TY Montgomery is a better rb than Lacy...just look at their 2016 stats!!!

Anyone have some perspective of how the defense might be shaping up with a juicy home MU vs. the Texans? Is this a defense worth the PU in must win FF games this week?

I'm in must win position also and am giving them a shot. Only had Rams on my roster and picked them up over Tampa and Carolina.

I saw it.  Looked like a still young and inexperienced guy who was rusty and tentative returning from injury.  It was a very bad play.  I also saw Wentz make Daniels, Peppers, and Mathews miss.

In a season like this one do you have even a few moments of joy after a win before you go negative and defeatist or is that constant, no matter what?  Me, I have had an enjoyable week thus far.  Sure the team is flawed, they nearly all are.  The rules are set up to impede long-term success, and yet we have experienced quite a bit.

I hope you find a happy place.  Let me help.

You think Sitton is why our rushing sucks? :lmao:   And Sitton's injury history was a part of the reason he was released.

And Adams is having a pretty damn good year was the point and has earned his QBs trust.  People still thinking too much about last year.

C'mon Nick.  The Packers offensive line has been fantastic this year.  The switch from Sitton to Taylor saved them a ton of $ and there has been no noticeable drop off.  The line only started struggling when they had Don Barclay in there.  He's awful.  Now that they've given the job to Spriggs, they are back to playing great.  Will be even better when Lang comes back.

As for Adams, 11 games in and he's on pace for  84/1128/12.  Stating that the gap between Adams and Allen Robinson has shrunk considerably is not outrageous.  Adams has 20 less targets on the year, and has 185 more yards and two more TDs than A-Rob.  He's also got 3 games superior to any put up by Robinson.  I know Aaron Rodgers >>> Bortles, but A-Rob has certainly had his own set of issues this year with drops and general poor play.  Adams has not looked as good this year as Robinson did a year ago, and I'd still take A-Rob over Adams, but as stated above, the gap is far narrower now.

No.  The defense will likely get housed by Miller's speed and having a functional level WR.  They've gotten exactly one turnover since 2008.

I enjoyed the win, sure.  Randall is young and inexperienced still.  Not sure how long he gets a pass on poor play though.  He's finishing out his second season and has shown no improvement at all.  He's been tentative and afraid to hit his whole career thus far.  He plays like a guy who doesn't want to hit anyone.  Always has.

You keep on being you.

Any appreciation for the Asianed lass?

Lol.  Of course.  Once you go Asian.... actually I've been married for 16 years so I wouldn't know anything about Asianed woman.

You mean Miller with 1.5 good ankles? Their entire RB arsenal is questionable this week. Don't get me wrong, Miller will go and he will be a threat, but it's not like they are incredibly deep at RB that they can run their RB into the ground when he's limping into the game.

I think the GB defense could be a very sneaky play this week:
- Osweiler has thrown an INT every game except for 2 this season (averaging 1.2 per game)
- He's thrown for more than 1 TD only 3 times this season.
- Lamar Miller has averaged over 4.0 YPC only 5 games this season
- Special teams... I think GB's special teams are a big difference this week in starting the GB D/ST

Especially lately, I think teams are forcing Osweiler to beat them and closing in on Miller. Miller is still getting his to some degree but is not being given the ball as much:

First 4 games Miller averaged 23.25 rushes per game, 3.5 targets with 3.25 receptions
Last 4 games Miller is averaging 18.75, 2.5 targets, 1.75 receptions

Big drop off

Me... I'd probably find someone better to start, but I can definitely see how this would be a play worth considering

I wouldn't touch their defense in fantasy but maybe I have seen too much of it and not enough Texans offense.  The defense is bad, add to that Clay may sit again this week and it gets worse

Who is more hurt?  Miller or the Packers Defense.  Those stats may be true but has Brock faced anything close to the Packers D in terms of disorganization and lack of talent in the defensive backfield?
