2019 End of Year Song Draft - Rounds 3/4 today - 1975 eligible, 2012 not. (1 Viewer)

12.ce - Paragraphs of Murder - Celph Titled

I have about 5 or 6 more rap songs that are all kind of neck and neck for me, none totally amazing, but I am going with this because I love this sample.

I first heard it like 10 years ago (?) on an Oh No album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPZC5esCJN8

Then Mos Def used in in Supermagic, along with a nice Malcom X sample at the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fleYGUH9SRk

I don't know if it was between those or after Supermagic that I found where the sample came from, Turkish folksinger Selda Bagcan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2Ew6JzfZC8

Later, Dr. Dre used the sample in the track Issues, though that is seemingly impossible to share since he is all exclusive and it seems to be scrubbed from youtube.

Bagcan has acquired fame in Turkey with her political lyrics. A prominent figure of the '60s in Turkey, she made several trips to jail for a total of nearly five months for either singing in Kurdish or turning banned poems by Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet into song lyrics.

Mellow covers

(15) Luna - Something In The Air

spoiler - we didn't get it together then nor are we now

(16) Trampled by Turtles - Our Town

didn't know this was a cover when it first appeared in my RR but I like it.  From wiki-

DeMent was inspired to write her first song "Our Town" by a drive through a boarded-up Midwest town, at the age of 25. The song lyrics came to her "exactly as it is now", without need for re-writing, and she realized then that songwriting was her calling in life.

I'm going to make one more pick and stop so I can listen more to the FFA collaborative playlist instead of trying to remember songs I liked this year.
