2022-2023 NBA Salary Cap Draft - First Annual Battle for the Wikkid Cup (2 Viewers)

1.01 Giannis Antetokounmpo F - $42,492,492

I assume (hope?) he was the obvious pick. He is probably the second best regular season player in the NBA, the best post season player, and at this point probably the only top 10 player that is especially elite on both ends of the floor. He's not as easy to build around as some others that will be taken in the next 5 picks, but he offers unmatched upside and I'll be able to use 2nd/3rd rounds to provide the necessary complementary pieces for him.

@scoobus
Giannis was the pick IMO.

1.02 Luka Doncic $37,096,500

Considered a few other guys here, salary definitely makes this interesting, but we'll go with the guy who could be the front runner for MVP this year. After watching what he did last year, carrying a meh Mavericks team over a juggernaut #1 seed Suns team, it's hard to deny his ascendance into one of, if not the, best players in the league. Unbelievable on offense with great size/versatility for team building. Also has that bit of a killer streak that translates so well to playoff basketball.

And he's still improving...

No V-Lookup to pull salary into the first tab from the 3rd? What is this, amateur hour?
I was afraid of people typing in the names differently (Jr vs Jr. etc). I figured a copy paste would be easy enough.

The team tab is all linked up though
Or you could use Data Validation to just look up the names from the salary page . . .
Seems outside my skill set. I’m management now.

Did some fun excel work tonight. More fun than my paid excel work today. So the back of these rosters are going to be quite ugly I assume?

Sorry for the delay. Going a slightly different route than I planned since I was hoping one of the guys who went before me would last.

1.05 - Jayson Tatum, SF, BOS

After leading his team to the Finals, he's off to an amazing start this year. A true two-way wing who's a great scorer, an average playmaker, and a good team defender at one of the hardest positions to fill. His salary is slightly lower than a few of the other guys I considered here and that tipped him over the top for me.

Was very interested to see where he would go, definitely the outlier of superstar still on a cheap deal. Considered at 2 but thought that was a bit early.
I don't know how this all is going to pan out with the salary cap. Could have made an argument for #1 I think.
With our cap restrictions I may have taken him at #1, but getting Giannis is a pretty big advantage, despite the cost, in its own right.

I thought Antetokounmpo was definitely a tier by himself, but the next four picked plus two others were in the next tier for me. Jokic is the best floor raiser in the NBA, so that team is guaranteed to be good but finding the right defense around him is tough; Luka is in kind of a similar boat, not as good, but an offense unto himself and provides a little more roster flexibility than Jokic; Tatum isn't on the same tier as a player but is probably the best two way wing in the NBA at this point and allows for a variety of different roster constructions; Morant is the only cheap guaranteed superstar and allows for a second tier star to be picked in the next round but will need a lot of defense and shooting around him to maximize.

Strongly considered moving back to @Yo Mama but decided I had a preference for one of the next 3/4 on my list.

When I started considering salary, I came out Giannis, Luka, Jokic, Tatum, Morant, Embiid.

So I will take Joel Embiid here at 1.06. I really thought Tatum would come to me, but I'll go with a guy who is pretty unstoppable, even if off to a tough start so far.

I strongly considered Embiid as my pick and I have the same top 6 as you. But I'm worried about his health (as usual) and prefer to build around a wing vs a center (unless I could've gotten Jokic).

1.09 Evan Mobley - Big - Cavs

I'm probably overthinking the salary element but this pick gives me $30M in cap room to work with later. Mobley is a versatile big who can defend the rim and switch on the perimeter. I'm betting he takes a leap on the offensive end in his sophomore season.

@nysfl2

Very optimistic pick on Mobley. I'm as high on his upside as pretty much anyone, especially defensively. But his offense has a long way to go to be the primary or even secondary option on that end. But great value on that salary to lock down the defense.
