2024-25 NBA Thread: Big weekend for Halliburtons (203 Viewers)

If it were acceptable to have a second team in sports, the Mavs would definitely be my second team this season since this trade. I would love to see them make a big run through the playoffs.

While LAL put up 44 points in the first quarter without LBJ playing. What’s wrong with Indy? Hali with a zero in the first 12 minutes.

Cuban didn’t sign off on the Luka deal at all. Had nothing to do with it.
He went from "I'm still in control of basketball ops" to "I can't even throw myself in front of the biggest mistake in franchise history" in what, 13 months?
My sense is "basketball ops" is really just game day experience, building maintenance, and things like that. Basically he gets to keep a good seat in the stadium if he wants to go.

The thing that gets me the most is that out of all the NBA owners save Ballmer, he's the one that seemed to enjoy it the most. Maybe that's where I'm wrong though.
Basketball Operations is what the General Manager is the head of the department for.

Each NBA team (btw, same in MLB and in the NFL, but replace the word basketball with baseball or football) is organized into Business Operations and Basketball Operations. Typically there is a head of each, often the Business head is called Team President and the basketball head is called General Manager. Sometimes the business head is CEO, and sometimes the basketball head is President. Rarely, one person is in charge of both but not the owner of the team. More commonly, the houses each report to the ownership.

Basketball Operations comprises:
1. Coaching (Advance scouting falls under coaching)
2. Player Development and Scouting
3. Training Staff
4. Basketball Analytics

Gameday experience and such all falls under Business Operations. For example, Rob Pelinka is not dealing with the cheerleaders, if the roof has a leak, swapping the floor to ice for the hockey team, etc.
What are you, some sort of expert on this stuff?
Can't tell if joke, sorry, will answer earnestly but concisely.

Before I got married I: was on the coaching staff of a P5 basketball program, spent a season in an NBA team front office reporting directly to the GM, spent a year at MLB's league office, was on the stadium management team (read: business side) for an NFL team, spent 4 years running a nationally recognized sports conference that isn't at MIT, and was a writer for SBNation under a pseudonym.
A simple "no" would suffice. 😉

AD with 24 points and 13 Rebounds at halftime. Mavs are blowing out the Rockets.
...and AD went to the locker room with an injury. Mavs fans get the whole AD experience in 3 quarters.

Celtics traded Jaden Springer and a 2030 2nd to HOU for a 2nd. Saves BOS over $15M in tax.
Springer was cut by the Rockets, so essentially BOS gave HOU a 2030 2nd round pick to swap picks this year and save $17 million in tax and salary. Surprised no one else has picked him up.

Looked like a hernia maybe

AD showing Nico what an Ironman looks like

It’ll be interesting to see how both Luka and LeBron adjust to taking a back seat to Austin Reaves when they return. Reaves with 45/7/7 today to beat the Pacers.
Only Lakers to ever have at least 45/7/7 in a game:

LeBron James
Kobe Bryant
Magic Johnson
Jerry West
Elgin Baylor
Austin Reaves

Pretty elite company.

They sure do have some offensive talent. Pretty crazy. I guess we’ll see if JJ can make them competent defensively and give them a chance.

Shams tweeted: “Lakers say the Mark Williams/Dalton Knecht trade has been rescinded.”
Yeah that’s crazy. Maybe Williams didn’t pass his physical?

Lakers overpaid, but are kinda screwed now that it’s after the deadline. Trade also opened up a roster spot and gave them apron room to sign a buyout player too. Not sure what they’ll be able to do now.

Yep, failed physical.

In watching Jimmy Butler's first game, you can see how this could maybe work.

Butler has ridiculous energy. He relentlessly moves without the ball, zig-zagging all across the court. He cuts expertly (his first basket as a Warrior was an alley-oop that he set up by lunging to the basket). He also set several bone rattling screens for Curry, giving Curry easy looks for his shot.

Butler made his presence felt, that was for sure.

Until he's hurt for 2 weeks.

Multiple issues, but not the back.

Laker fans want to kick the tires on Dwight Howard now.

Tatum with 19 points in the 3rd quarter in NY. Made a few nice defensive plays in the quarter as well. Knicks had cut it to 3 at one point early in the 3rd, but now Boston is up 20 going into the 4th.

I don't believe he is a serious MVP candidate, but he's well on his way to 4 straight 1st team All-NBA.

ETA: And he's done a lot of his work going right at Bridges.

Then the dynamic duo of Luke Kornet and Peyton Pritchard deliver a knockout blow in the 4th.

Kornet currently 7/7 for 14 pts, 12 rbs and 3 blocks while Pritchard has 22 pts on 12 FG attempts.

„Mark Cuban jokes with Bill Gates about the Mavericks trading Luka Doncic:

“If after you left the company, they traded Microsoft 11 for Microsoft 10… what would you do?”

Wow the Lakers are screwed. Any buyout centers going to be available? If they get matched up with the Nuggets Joker may average 60.
He was going to score 60 anyway. Williams is not a defender.
Yea but he could add something on the other end. Whomever they play now is going to likely be a total zero.

Yep. But they weren't winning the title anyway. Mainly I'm sad the Lakers got to rescind a trade they were getting ripped off in.

The Western Conference is brutal. You see the 12-win Pelicans on the schedule, and you think your team might cruise to a win. And then, surprise, Zion Williamson is going to play in his 16th game of the season and look like an MVP candidate and the team is super dangerous.
