2024-25 NBA Thread: defeated Minnesota fan ready to move on to next crushing disappointment (92 Viewers)

Lakers trading for Finney-Smith was such a good move by them. He was huge tonight and really helps them go small ball (since they basically have to).

Yeah, him and Vincent won that game for them....Jalen Green continues to disappoint me in marquee matchups. He's great against the Wizards of the world but always seems to disappear when needed most. I just don't have a good feeling about him when Playoff time rolls around.
That block LeBron had on Sengun towards rhe end of the game was vintage.

So many great games the past couple days - definitely some playoff feeling to things (and some pretty bad tanking too). Nuggets/Wolves has been fun.

Of all the reviews at the end of the game, how do the refs not review that last out of bounds play and just do that jump ball at half court?

61-10-10 for Joker lol. I know the mvp has been decided already for some reason but insane to me he’s not the favorite.

Well maybe not insane because SGA is so good but still.
Jokic should be it.

There are 2 arguments to give it to SGA and about a dozen for Jokic.

We've seen a guy lead his team to 65 wins and lead the league in scoring before. We've never seen a guy put up Jokic's numbers, ever. Clearly SGA has the better supporting cast also so the "best team" mantra should be taken with a grain of salt.

There is also a hefty dose of voter fatigue going around with a dash of cool black North American dude vs slow white Euro.

Russ on both ends

Crazy the lack of game awareness he still has. No need to push the floor and make that layup. Take it back out and run clock you fool.
I would say the miss of an open layup is a much bigger issue than the thought. In that specific instance, I think the layup is probably the right call. The Nuggets didn't want Russ or Braun getting fouled with 6 or 7 seconds left to shoot FTs.

They aren't allowed to review those type of plays without a challenge. The last play wasn't a review of if it was a foul, it was to confirm time and if it was a three or not, which is something they can do.

What SGA is doing this year is wildly impressive as well. He's not having a typical MVP season, he is having a truly uncommonly great MVP season. With the distance in terms of quality between Jokic/SGA and the rest of the field, and being that Jokic has 3 MVPs, I don't think it is a bad take to give the MVP to Jokic. Jokic might be having the best offensive season of all time, but SGA might be having a top 10-15 offensive season on one of the best regular season teams of all time.

I don't think we'll look back at this like a Nash v. Shaq thing but wow, what a season for the big guy. I'd still give it SGA just to share the wealth and because they're far and away the best regular season team.

This is what makes the MVP vote bad to me. The award isn't Most Valuable Player Who Hasn't Won One Yet. There's no one that can convince me that there's anyone more valuable to their team than Jokic. Nuggets would be garbage without him.

Edited to add: That's how Jokic lost to Fraud Embid. Jokic should have 5 after this year, no doubt. And then people will use the fact that he "only has 3 MVPs" to diminish his career once it's all said and done.

I thought in the last minute or two the refs could review out of bounds calls without a challenge. Maybe that’s college?

Yeah, that is college (and the NBA prior to like 3 seasons ago).

ESPN's final NBA MVP straw poll is in (100 media members polled, maybe or maybe even most of whom actually vote) - SGA got 77 1st place votes (23 2nd place), Jokic got the inverse of that. Giannis and Tatum finish closely grouped at 3 and 4, way behind SGA/Jokic and way ahead of the rest of the field.

Everybody votes 1st through 5th - The only two players that got on all ballots were SGA/Jokic. Giannis was on 95 ballots, Tatum was on 97, Mitchell was on 63. Some dipshit had a 5th place vote for Harden, there was some stray third place votes for Lebron, Cunningham, and Brunson, but otherwise the voters did a good job.

Being far and away the best team in the league weighs heavily. It's more about that than who hasn't won yet. If SGA was on the Wizards we wouldnt be having this discussion.

I get that's the way it is but that's also bad, imo. To take it to an extreme, If player 1 had 4 all stars on his team and won 65 games, and player 2 had a bunch of middle schoolers and won 50, that should be a bump for player 2. Player 2 clearly more valuable.

Say what now?

They are 2.5 games up on Cleveland, who just had a 4 game losing streak. Yes their net rating is possibly historic, but this isn't a 70 win team.

SGA has played some extra unnecessary minutes, also. More than was needed to pad his stats. Jokic does no such thing. His team can't win without him on the floor but once it's decided he sits.

I don't equate the records in the East on the same level. Kinda JV over there.

They could definitely be a 70 win team if they feel like running through the tape

We'll see in the Finals. Boston is still likely the best team at full strength in a 7 game series. They've been tweaking things and resting guys all season, just coasting their way to 60 wins and the best road record in the league.

I mean, they get to coast because they are in the East

You know they can still get to 70 right? They are having an historic regular season, one of the best ever. That’s not really an opinion and there is no other way to slice it.

The stat padding comment is nonsense. SGA and the Thunder bring it every single game, that’s all.

Also I have zero bad things to say about Jokic, he’s the best player in the world and if he were to win he’d absolutely be deserving. I don’t think there is a wrong answer. I also don’t think people will hold “only” 3 MVPs against Jokic in terms of where he ranks historically, and he’s as good of a bet as any to win next year or the year after.

Only bad thing I have to say about the Joker is him wiping his schnoz on his jersey every 3 minutes.

Yes, I know it's possible bit they'll have to win out.

I hope they try.
