Oh now I understand. I am still trying to get my brain to say Czechia

======

@derek Rae
If you’re watching Türkiye-Portugal today, please don’t get angry at commentators or presenters for the way we pronounce „Türkiye.“ They no longer wish to be referred to as "Turkey“ & I’m sure you’ll agree, it’s not up to non-Turks to impose a name on a country that’s unwanted

Thats nobody’s business but the Turks!

I don't necessarily care, but it still seems weird. They call themselves Turkiye, not Turkey. Isn't that somewhat normal? Many countries have a different name in their own native language than the country is called in that country's native language.
I was just in Turkey a few weeks ago and asked my Turkish friend there why they changed it.

It sounds silly, but it is literally so that they aren't being compared to the delicious thanksgiving bird. They've always pronounced it "Turkiye", but got tired of foreigners pronouncing it like the bird, so the government "changed it" for foreigners. But nothing changed locally as they always pronounced it this way.

Fun fact: The delicious bird was actually named after the country, as there were many similar looking birds in the area.

Time for the annual casual soccer fan with a question/comment.

Putting a team a man down for a red card seems overly harsh to me. I get how dangerous a high kick like that is, but there’s things in other sports that are equally or maybe more dangerous like horse collar tackles and leading with your helmet and the penalty for it does not include placing those teams to be a man down.

Putting a team a man down like in this last game is pretty much sealing their fate to lose over one individual’s mistake. Seems harsh.

It is harsh.

It is difficult, though not impossible, to win while playing a man down. (Ecuador were in fact leading in this game.)

Players know the rules and the consequences, which keeps major injuries to a minimum from dangerous contact.

It used to be worse - there used to be incidents that resulted in a Penalty kick and a Red Card. But there are very few of those now.

Hell the Union recently lost a game to a team with 9 players. Not their proudest moment.

Euro Scenarios Preamble.
Okay so with 4 third place teams qualifying it's a lot more messy with tiebreaker scenarios and the like.
So I'm going to stick with what it will take for each team to finish in a given spot.

(Almost) ZERO teams are mathematically eliminated at this time - even (sorry Poland), even Croatia and Hungary. Though it will take a lot for a team with 3 points - or dare I say 2 points to make it to the knock out rounds.

Okay for fun the 2 point scenario would have Scotland or Denmark or Slovenia or Serbia or Georgia or Czechia go through with 2 points.
Basically:
Scotland Ties Hungary and finishes 3rd with 2
AND
Czechia and Georgia both lose or tie (so they end up where the 3rd place team has either 1 or 2)
AND
Slovenia loses (no matter what happens in Denmark/Serbia the end result would be the third place team having 2)

Let's root for the above to happen.

Anyway we'll start with Group A. That will be in the next post.

Euro 2024 Group A Scenarios

Germany: 1st with a win or tie vs Switzerland. 2nd with a loss to Switzerland. Easy peasy.

Switzerland:
1st win vs Germany.
2nd with a tie vs Germany
2nd with a loss to Germany and a Scotland tie or loss vs Hungary
2nd with a loss to Germany and a Scotland win vs Hungary and the combined margin is 5 or less
2nd with a loss to Germany and a Scotland win vs Hungary and the combined margin is 6 and Scotland fails to outscore Switzerland by at least 2
2nd with a loss to Germany and a Scotland win vs Hungary and the combined margin is 6 and Scotland outscores Switzerland by exactly 2 and better discipline (currently SUI -4, SCO -7)
3rd with a loss to Germany and a Scotland win vs Hungary and none of the above are true

Scotland
2nd with a win vs Hungary and a Switzerland loss vs Germany and the combined margin is 7 or more.
2nd with a win vs Hungary and a Switzerland loss vs Germany and the combined margin is 6 and Scotland outscores Switzerland by at least 3.
2nd with a win vs Hungary and a Switzerland loss vs Germany and the combined margin is 6 and Scotland outscores Switzerland by exactly 2 and equal or better discipline (currently SUI -4, SCO -7). Equal goes to Scotland because they had a higher Euro Qualification Seed. No lucky ping pong balls involved.
3rd with a win vs Hungary and none of the above is true
3rd with a tie vs Hungary
4th with a loss to Hungary

Hungary
3rd with a vs Scotland
4th with a tie or loss vs Scotland

So there you go.

******** it, ref don't stop play on a non head injury.

======

looks like he blew out a hammy. That will be a huge loss for Mexico.

I've seen them use stretchers for fake injuries hundreds of times. When they get to the sideline the guy jumps up and is ready to play again. Here, Alvarez clearly couldn't put any pressure on his leg due to his hammy, yet they make him limp 50 yards to the sideline? Weird.

I assume squad numbers are chosen based on seniority - but a few odd choices in here.

ETA - USMNT squad numbers
Which numbers strike you as odd?
CCV -2
Richards- 3
Robinson - 5
Ream - 13
Weah - 21
Scally - 22

I am sure there are legitimate reasons why players chose the number they did, and seniority probably was a factor - which had a knock on effect on other players.

Ream, Weah and Robinson have been wearing those numbers for years now. The rest I assume choose what is left after the senior players have made their choices.

My hopes for a 2/3rds full look way too hopeful now.

When people lament how Americans don’t turn up for major soccer tournaments, this is why: ticketing. Tomorrow’s
@USMNT vs Bolivia match should be a sell out, but the lower levels instead will be noticeably empty on camera.

I think this is the current draw for the Euros after Round 2:

Spain v. Slovakia
Germany v. Denmark

Portugal v. Slovenia
France v. Belgium

Romania v. Albania
Netherlands v. Turkiye

England v. Austria
Switzerland v. Italy

That would be an incredibly fortuitous draw for England, if it holds.
You mean:
España v Slovensko
Deutschland v Danmark

Portugal v Slovenija
France v België/Belgique/Belgien

România v Shqipërisë
Nederland v Turkiye

England v. Österreich
Schweiz/Suisse/Svizzera/Svizra v Italia

Just having fun with it.

Group E Scenarios:
Here we go....everyone has 3 points right now
I'm gonna be honest this is dicey. I'm going on the premise that when a team wins a multi-team tie it goes back to step 1, there's a little room for multiple interpretations here but it has an incredible impact in the 4-way tie scenario depending on scores possibly.

Romania
1st with a win vs Slovakia and a Ukraine win/tie vs Belgium
1st with a tie vs Slovakia and a Ukraine tie with Belgium and Romania scores as many or more goals than Belgium
2nd with a win vs Slovakia and a Belgium win vs Ukraine
2nd with a tie vs Slovakia and a Ukraine tie with Belgium and Belgium scores more goals than Romania
2nd with a tie vs Slovakia and a Belgium win vs Ukraine
3rd with a loss vs Slovakia and a Ukraine loss vs Belgium
4th with a loss vs Slovakia and a Belgium tie/loss vs Ukraine

Belgium
1st with a win vs Ukraine and a Romania win/tie vs Slovakia
1st with a tie vs Ukraine and a Romania tie vs Slovakia and Belgium outscores Romania
2nd with a win vs Ukraine and a Slovakia win vs Romania
2nd with a tie vs Ukraine and Romania/Slovakia doesn't end in a tie
2nd with a tie vs Ukraine and a Romania tie vs Slovakia and Belgium doesn't outscore Romania <--- corrected
3rd with a loss vs Ukraine and a Romania loss vs Slovakia
4th with a loss vs Ukraine and a Slovakia tie/loss vs Romania

While run this is not how it rolls - they do all 3 tiebreakers steps and THEN and only then do they go back to the top. So now I have to fix this.
4th with a tie vs Ukraine and a Romania tie vs Slovakia and Romania scores as many or more goals than Belgium*
*- this is the sticky one. In a 4-way tie, Romania and Belgium are both +1 goal difference with Romania scoring more goals. The question is if that situation holds (resulting in Romania being put in position 1) does the tiebreaker immediately go back to step a? In that Scenario Ukraine is 2nd (based on 4 points vs SVK and BEL) and then SVK beat BEL. I'm going with that premise but there is room for interpretation. Hopefully we'll find out. That would be fun. If my interpretation is wrong - this scenario would result in Belgium being 2nd.

Slovakia
1st with a win vs Romania and a Belgium win/tie vs Ukraine
2nd with a win vs Romania and a Ukraine win vs Belgium
3rd with a tie vs Romania and Ukraine/Belgium isn't a tie in fact 3rd even if it is a 4-way tie.
3rd - I think - with a tie and a Ukraine/Belgium tie and Romania scores as many or more goals than Belgium* Fun fact - right result but the wrong reason. They'd still be thrid in this case though.
3rd with a loss vs Romania and a Belgium loss vs Ukraine
4th with a tie vs Romania and a Ukraine/Belgium tie and Belgium scores more goals than Romania in their game.
4th with a loss vs Romania and a Ukraine tie/loss vs Belgium

Ukraine
1st with a win vs Belgium and a Slovakia win/tie vs Romania
2nd with a win vs Belgium and a Romania win vs Slovakia
2nd - I think - with a tie vs Belgium and a Romania tie vs Slovakia and Romania scores as many or more goals than Belgium* Fun thought while it lasted.
3rd with a tie vs Belgium and Romania tie vs Slovakia and Belgium scores more goals than Romania in their game.
3rd with a loss vs Belgium and a Slovakia loss vs Romania
4th with a loss vs Belgium and Romania loss/tie vs Slovakia
4th if they tie vs Belgium and Romania tie vs Slovakia. My fun scenario is wrong.

So there you go - I think I fixed this.

Portugal have clinched 1st.

Turkiye:
2nd with a win or tie vs Czechia
3rd with a loss to Czechia and an Georgia loss or tie vs Portugal
4th with a loss to Czechia and a Georgia win vs Spain

Czechia:
2nd with a win over Turkiye and a Portugal win/tie vs Georgia
2nd with a win over Turkiye and a Georgia win over Portugal and the margin of victory in the two games is the same
2nd with a win over Turkiye and a Georgia win over Portugal and Georgia's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Czechia's and Czechia outscores Georgia
2nd with a win over Turkiye and a Georgia win over Portugal and Georgia's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Czechia's and Czechia and George score the same number of goals and Czechia has equal or superior discipline (currently GEO -5, CZE -6)
3rd with a win over Turikye and a Georgia win over Portugal and none of the above conditions in the same situation apply.
3rd with a tie vs Turkiye and a Georgia loss/tie vs Portugal
3rd with a loss vs Turikye and a Georgia loss vs Portugal and they win the tiebreaker but they won't be able to advance with just 1 point.
4th with a tie vs Turkiye and a Georgia win vs Portugal
4th with a loss vs Turkiye and a Georgia win/tie vs Portugal
4th with a loss vs Turkiye and a Georgia loss vs Portugal and they lose a tiebreaker that won't affect anything.

Georgia:
2nd with a win over Portugal and a Czechia win over Turkiye and Georgia's margin of victory is 2+ more than Czechia's margin of victory
2nd with a win over Portugal and a Czechia win over Turkiye and Georgia's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Czechia's and Georgia outscores Czechia
2nd with a win over Portugal and a Czechia win over Turkiye and Georgia's margin of victory is exactly 1 more than Czechia's and Czechia and George score the same number of goals and Georgia has superior discipline (currently GEO -5, CZE -6)
3rd with a win over Portugal and Czechia win over Turkiye and note of the above conditions in the same situation apply.
3rd with a win over Portugal and a Turkiye win/tie vs Czechia
3rd with a tie vs Portugal and a Turkiye win vs Czechia
3rd with a loss vs Portugal and a Czechia loss vs Turikye and they win the tiebreaker but they won't be able to advance with just 1 point.
4th with a tie vs Portugal and a Czechia win/tie vs Turkiye
4th with a loss vs Portugal and a Czechia win/tie vs Turkiye
4th with a loss vs Portugal and a Czechia loss vs Portugal and they lose a tiebreaker that won't affect anything.

So there you go.

Any and all errors are mine - ya get what ya pay for.

Shorter Group E (the 4-way tie Romania/Belgium/Slovakia/Ukraine)

All 4 would definitely advance if they win.
Belgium and Romania would definitely advance if they tie.
Slovakia will definitely be 3rd if they tie.
Ukraine is 4th if both games tie. 3rd if they tie and the other game is not a tie.

If both game are not drawn, who is ahead of who depends on the combo of winners losers. These apply to both to the 1st place and 3rd place ties:
Romania beat Ukraine
Belgium beat Romania
Slovakia beat Belgium
Ukraine beat Slovakia

Still pretty neat that all 4 teams can finish in all 4 positions.

GGG said every one is healthy enough to play "some role" tonight. I don't know if that is an indication that Adams is healthy but not enough to start.
