2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (3 Viewers)

@Capella I'll fight you over this. Imagine your Lightning playing 4v5 for 90% of the game. The level of opposition matter less with the huge man advantage. It takes a toll mentally and physically from the start.

Could they have played better? Sure, most teams could say that in any situation. Whorebath makes that save, 86% of the negativity is gone
Look man I get it. They were up against it (because of their own doing to be clear). My point stands that they are always this mediocre, nothing changes, we have the same bozo coach and bozo schemes, we don’t look prepared, nobody ever gets better, we don’t beat teams better than us, we struggle and lose against teams a shade below us and don’t hammer crap squads like Bolivia or whomever the hell we played the other day. Even if we advance we’d lose 1-0 in the first knockout game in an uncompetitive match and then everybody would pile in to say how close we are and in a few years it’ll get better. And then it won’t. Other than that things are great.
And we keep losing to Mexico... It's the worst.

And it's just so ****ing undisciplined. Button it the **** up.

Z mentioned Turner not getting to the first goal (which I mostly dismissed) and some ish else mentioned Horvarh not getting the cross that led to the 2md goal.
Not necessarily that he didn't get to the cross, but the shot was hit head high. That has to go over the bar and not get past weak hands to the goal as he's falling.
The cross was ~20 seconds or so before the goal. It was not a good cross and nobody from Panama was near it. He should have fell on it and laid on it for 10 seconds. Instead he just let it run for Jedi who didn't hit a good clearance and then the sequence that led to the goal started.

while VAR was too slow tonight, I think it got all the big decisions correct.

The US goal was offside, Weah's was 100% a red card, and the negated PK call for Panama was also correct.

He essentially dodged the ball. It was hit right at his face. If it were a tackling dummy there it would have been saved.

Tough shot, but yeah... Right at him.
It's not an easy save, but you have to make it at this level.

“Defending with their lives” and it’s against f’n Panama
Because it's 11v10, not necessarily the quality of the opponent
Quality of the US team too.
They're playing with 10 men.
They're playing with 10 men.
Etc.
You act like they didn’t create that mess themselves! It all sucks!

We suck. I'm sorry but we do. Year after year after year it's nothing but excuses for this team. We aren't good. It's not the coaches, it's not the refs.....we aren't good at soccer. Never have been, never will be. Ever. It's not in our DNA.
At least Americans are good at fishing...

Some positives..

Balo finally looked the part.
jedi keeps looking solid.
We have the opportunity to find 2 new CBs in the next 2 years.
We finally get a new coach... OR they beat Uruguay. Win/win ultimately...maybe.

Eta.. and Adams didn't get hurt yet

The real kick in the nads will be beating Uruguay and still not advancing.

I just realized - Uruguay can't clinch tonight, can they?

This could still end on 6 points each.

That is bad news for the US.
They can't mathematically clinch, but a big win tonight and their GD will be very very unlikely to be beat by Panama.

But if we win 2-0 against Uruguay - that would knock them back some.

I am not saying its likely - but, with Uruguay still needing a result to make it through - I think it makes it less likely the US can get a result of their own.

And lets be realistic here. It is not like the new coach is going to suddenly start picking different players.

The first 18 guys on this roster pretty much pick themselves, so the only thing that can be changed is tactics/formations.

And while I do think US Soccer will fire GGG if this goes as expected, we likely won't be getting a big name coach due to US Soccer wanting to keep the men's and women's coaching position some what equal pay.

We can say better after the Bolivia game tonight.

If they only win by 1, then they may be more careful, but if they win by 3, that puts them 6 ahead of Panama on GD.

Would JJ Redick be a better US coach than the man who halts bears? Alexi Lalas, Steven A Smith, Kendall Perkins, and an actual bear join us to discuss. This is SportsCenter.

Lock them all in a room, until one survives. Then, put him down as too dangerous.

I'll be honest, USMNT could do worse than hiring Emma Hayes.

Maybe we can steal Jesse from Canada since they're digging in the couch cushions to pay his measly salary.

You could feel the US was out of position right when Jedi got sucked in due to Whorebath not doing his job. Jedi is quality and his game has grown but he makes mistakes inside the defensive box. This wasn't the first poor clearance or being in the wrong spot.

Don't get me started on how shifty CCV played. Dude was lunging at everything and was lucky not to get a red on that dangerous challenge. Lucky the ball went away early so he didn't go studs up on a guy's leg in the box.

This loss is on Weah. But it's also on GGG. Someone needs to take the fall for failure. Marsch is ****ing laughing at us. You know they will get a draw against Chile and advance. Stupid Cannucks.

worst part of crashing out early here is the utter lack of useful games for the next two years. Even if we get a new coach, no one will have any idea whether the team is better or not come WC2026.

=======

I should also acknowledge that a good run in Copa is ultimately meaningless two years from now, even if it would feel good today. The US made a run to the semi's in Copa 2016. Remember how well the US did in WC 2018? Right, no one else does either.

It would never happen and I don't like him, but I would love to see what Mourinho could do with this squad.

I had some questions about the GGG subs tonight:

CCV instead of Miles, and Johnny instead of Musah both did not work out for me.

I also would have gone Sargent ahead of Pepi, as Sargent's work rate was built for a ten man defend at all costs tactics.

I know others did not like the formation but I think it worked in limiting chances. Panama scored on one of their very few good chances.
In fact, not moving to this shell immediately after we got the lead was likely a mistake.

But I think that's the biggest thing that needs to be fixed. We have the players. There's nothing wrong with our roster. There's a reason we keep saying over and over every #9 comes here and just dies from lack of service. And it just hasn't changed.

The short time recently when it did? When BJ was in charge. Give him the lead and let's see what he can do.

Some one mentioned this and it made me completely rethink my stance.

While on the surface, the Dest red was clearly "dumber", when you factor in the game/tournament states at the time of the red, I think Weah's is far far dumber.

Dest took the red with, I think, a 4 goal lead.
Weah took the red at 0-0, knowing that the US's hardest game was to come and Panama's easiest game was to come.

Just because we are in a bad spot, we don't need to do something stupid like hire BJ. Was the soccer better under him? It was more enjoyable but our bar needs to be higher. BJ is akin to just naming McKennie as player-coach or something.

Since this is on topic, could you please link the Dest red for those of us (me) out of the loop?

however, by your context here, Weah's has to be worse. That was devastating

This is what I said earlier. As soon as you go up 1-0 being down a man you immediately bunker and try to ride it out.

Maybe they still lose who knows. But to not immediately make a strategic shift tells me GGG does not strategically pivot as needed which I already knew. Always too slow with subs.

That still doesn’t excuse how terrible everything else was.

You guys honestly think it's the coach and not the players? Or the culture?
depends on the question I guess.

Do you think the US should be a top 5 team? if so then it is all on the players as no coach can turn this group of players into a top 5 team.

If you think the US is doing slightly worse than the quality of the players says we should be (based on where and how they play in Europe), then it is more on the coach.

Culture has little to do with it, IMO. Johnny, Musah, Dest, Balogun, Jedi, CCV, Lund, Musah, Tillman and others were developed outside the US in the best soccer cultures on the planet. Pulisic and McKennie both spent time overseas as young players and Pulisic went pro extremely young.

The Dest red card, on the surface, was one of the worst red cards in history.... :lmao:

Watch his teammates here:

Yes. I do. I think many other coaches would get more out of this team.
They can’t go into this home World Cup with this guy can they?

US Soccer is glacial like in their willingness to make changes. Even when every one was begging for Klinsmann to get fired, they stuck with him until it was too late.

I fear that if the US get out of the group, play a close but losing game to Colombia/Brazil, that US Soccer will stick with him.

It is far more likely now though that the US crashes out in the group stage. With this being at home, and being arguably the weakest group in the Copa, then this would mean an instant fire for 99% of the countries who play the sport. I give it a 50-50 whether US Soccer has the ability to make the change.

If we do go for a new coach, I hope for the first time in our history we look to the deep south of our borders for a coach from South America. We have done the American and European dance with coaches many times now.

We might as well try something different.

I think the culture within/around the US Soccer Federation is definitely a large issue. The whole Gio Reyna/Berhalter saga showed some of what is going on. You can see some of this toxicity bleed through the media too. The amount of infighting around the team does impact play.

I do agree with the notion that another coach could get more out of this squad than Berhalter.

I was thinking about soccer culture in the US when speaking. But you are correct, the culture in and around the federation has never been great ever since they went into a "big business" mode.
