2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (3 Viewers)

also some crazy stuff being allowed to happen
I thought it was a credit to the deep experience of both teams that things didn't boil over last night. There were quite a few tackles that could have gone wrong and some of them weren't even whistled. Romero bulled into one tackle like he was planning on killing a Chilean at the peak of the chippiness, but both players let up at the last second.
Great point. Adn also almost all of the time there was a handshake or acknowledged pat on the back/wave.

I feel like there was a directive about not falling for the usual conmebol/conccaf schtick. So they've erred on the opposite side of it.

An aside... I freaking love how arg play. High pressure, all-in, but sooo composed on the ball despite going a million miles an hour all game. DePaul and Gonzalez were absolutely incredible. And their defense was rock solid. Even their style can shift between ball control and direct.

Colombia has looked great. Brazil, despite their issues scoring, has looked good too especially knowing they have several more gears to ratchet up to. But Arg have been a tier above everybody. So good. So fun to watch.

Sorry, a bit behind, had to drive 2.5 hours each way to pick the kid up from an ODP camp...

But the Copa refs seem to be calling 1 of every 5 fouls, and then absolutely nothing for the final 10 mins of the match. Its crazy.

And both England and Brazil look way off the pace in either tourney.

I can't get over how bad the bracket played out in the Euro's.

Germany vs Spain should very well be the finals match up but it is now likely to be only a quarter final game....
England are back to betting favorites to win Euro 2024 on the back of that scintillating draw against Slovenia.

Or maybe it's the insanely favorable draw in the knockout stage. Its definitely one of those things...
Bookies-
They won their group and literally can't play any worse... It's gotta go up from here?
It helps that 4 of the top-5 favorites are in the other bracket...
Hopefully the Netherlands lands for England in the round of 16 to help balance things a little.

Italy are the wild card game for England. If England are having problems scoring against teams with significantly weaker defenses than Italy, that could make for an interesting quarter final match up.

Other than Italy, even if England continue to play poorly, they should still be favored in every game up until the final.
We can all hope that ITA holds ENG to zero goals and Barella scores a dumb one from outside the box in the 92nd.

And both England and Brazil look way off the pace in either tourney.
I was watching Brazil and focused on Bruno G. for :homer: reasons and noticed he kept looking for teammates to make runs, they didn't materialize, and he'd have to pass backwards or sideways. It seemed like he was even getting frustrated by the end of the match.

Potential for a lot of dramatic chaos in the morning set of games. YoutubeTV will probably do the split screen if you have that.

It is a really well-organized team. They know how to suffer when the goals aren't going in. A lot of midfielders that contribute all over the pitch. Even without Messi, they would be a tough out in tournament play.

Euro bracket could be a preview of how WC2026 plays out given 3rd place teams will again be in the knock-out mix. Anyway.

wow confusing lol

I wish I loved ANYTHING as much as Derek Rae loves adding additional letters, syllables and points of inflection to the name "De Bruyne"

It starts out as "Da- Broy- Na" and by the 35 minute mark, its basically "DaBRYNANNSEJHKGJNA"
He actually tries to say the names of players correctly, unlike the vast majority of English language commentators

Spain vs. 3F/Slovakia
Germany vs. Denmark
Portugal vs. Hungary/Slovenia
France vs. Belgium
Romania vs. Dutch/Slovenia
Austria vs. 2F
England vs. Dutch/Slovakia
Swiss vs. Italy

Watching that game I was more wondering who Brazil's goal scorer would be. They do not have that R9 type in this team, or even a Neymar. Vini looked pedestrian too. Couldn't see who you could serve to get a chance.

Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, Belgium all on one side.
They should make that semi the final, and the other the third place match.
Italy/England/Dutch/Austria aren't horrible, but definitely the better teams on the left. Can you Imagine these quarter finals (if the favourites all win)

Can you give the scenarios for the bracket? Like what needs to happen for the Dutch to play England instead of playing Romania.

And they'll be signing "England's GOING HOME!"

And I might be rooting for Austria in this scenario.

The thing about these uneven sides, it's more about one uneven corner of it. England/Netherlands/Switzerland/Italy is not bad at all and is fairly strong overall. It's that upper bracket that is just mindblowing.

The upper bracket is only crazy because France played well below expectations in the group stage. They finished second in their group for good reason as they struggled for 3 straight games.

CZE/TUR getting away from the ref
meanwhile, Portugal playing with fire, and look more likely to get a man sent off than score right now...
Neto booked for diving, and Cristiano already on a yellow for dissent.

Can’t believe he even argued that. Was hilarious

Goals have dried up incredibly in the 3rd game of the Euro's. Every one is playing so tight to just hope to move on.

Only 13 goals scored, so far, across 12 games (2 games still have second halves to play). And 5 of the 13 came in a single game.
