2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (1 Viewer)

It is stinking hot here in NYC. The game tonight will be rough.
Meh, these guys are used to 100 degree games in Spain, etc.
In Spain? They play in the middle of the summer there?
Yes.
So they took a break to play the euros and copa? And then right back into it... Interesting.
They've hosted Euro's in Spain in the summer and plenty of teams/players/kids have played a LOT of football games in weather over the 81 degrees it will be at kickoff.

You think Argentinian and Chilean players are new to 80 degree weather?

As far as I can tell Draftkings and Fanduel still have England as the favorite to win the tournament. That is unthinkable to me after what we've seen so far. Maybe its just because the English love to gamble and are all massive homers?

I think it is because their path to the title game is so much easier.

Germany, France, Spain, Portugal are ALL on the other side of the draw which drastically decreases their odds of making it to the final. If it's England vs Any of those 4 teams in the finals, England will not be favoured.

Anyone know how the 3rd place teams get ranked and how that determines their matchups in round of 16? Trying to determine some possible matchup scenarios.

They're lower odds than they were pre-tourney. I don't have them all memorized, but looks like most are in about the same place. I did put some money on England as a hedge against how annoying it will be if they finally win something.

The poor line judge who is on the sun side had a heat stroke
On TV it was extremely noticeable that the sunny side was significantly less full than the other sections. Did people not buy those seats or did they just seek out shade some where during the game?
Quite a few people moved at half. The GA section where the Cauldron is normally located went from sunny and empty in the 1st half to shaded and mostly full in the second. The announced attendance was just under 12k which is around 60% capacity, which felt accurate to my eyes.

Costa with the concacaf on full display.

Honestly, I'm torn about what to do with a superior opponent on paper, but they parked, and delayed as much as they could. A just decision imo.

It almost worked for a point.

On another note, both games today, the refs for the most part have been told not to fall for the dramatic concacaf knee hold foul scream/roll. ARG did their fair share but it's apparent the refs have been told to let them play on. I like it.

And as a current high school coach/former club coach... the constant in-your-face response from players whether it's a yellow or pointing "out on them" is so draining. No player in the history of ever has changed a ref's call. Just.shut.up.

This has to have been one of the largest crowds supporting one team in either tournament. This is insane for a team playing in a different continent. Argentina's tonight was also crazy but did not pop quite as much for on screen due to the colors Colombia has.

It's insane how much difference there is between the top 2-3 teams in the world and the USMNT.

France just brought in 3 substitutes.... Olivier Giroud, Eduardo Camavinga, and Antoine Griezmann. Two of those would be the greatest USMNT player of all time had they played for the US and one of them is one of the best players 21 and younger in the world.

And yet our players have scored just as many goals in the Euros during the run of play as theirs have.

I felt like I drove to Argentina to see a game vs just driving to Jersey. An amazing atmosphere through and through. Will post more about it in the morning.

Looks like I did my math wrong - Denmark was 2nd on discipline points to win that tiebreaker -6 to -7 instead of being placed ahead based on them being a higher seed pre tourney.

according to UEFA's own stats, they were both -6

oh I think I now understand the confusion.

Wiki explained it.

The yellow cards on the field were actually 6 and 6, but the difference was that some how, Slovenia's technical director also picked up a yellow card during one of the games.

I was reading an article today that made the interesting case that Argentina may have now passed Mexico as the most popular national team in the US.

Sadly this likely makes the US 3rd now.

Refs have let a lot go at the copa.

I think I like it, but also some crazy stuff being allowed to happen, escalating physicality.

I can't get over how bad the bracket played out in the Euro's.

Germany vs Spain should very well be the finals match up but it is now likely to be only a quarter final game....

the weird thing about this is that some of these refs are Euro refs and even they are swallowing the whistles. There could easily be twice as many yellows in these games.

England are back to betting favorites to win Euro 2024 on the back of that scintillating draw against Slovenia.

Or maybe it's the insanely favorable draw in the knockout stage. Its definitely one of those things...

Bookies-
They won their group and literally can't play any worse... It's gotta go up from here?

It helps that 4 of the top-5 favorites are in the other bracket...

Totally. But the way they've played, I don't know that it matters

Hopefully the Netherlands lands for England in the round of 16 to help balance things a little.

Italy are the wild card game for England. If England are having problems scoring against teams with significantly weaker defenses than Italy, that could make for an interesting quarter final match up.

Other than Italy, even if England continue to play poorly, they should still be favored in every game up until the final.

I thought it was a credit to the deep experience of both teams that things didn't boil over last night. There were quite a few tackles that could have gone wrong and some of them weren't even whistled. Romero bulled into one tackle like he was planning on killing a Chilean at the peak of the chippiness, but both players let up at the last second.

England is favored because they're on the good side of the bracket and are almost impossible to score on -- only 6 goals against in their last 15 Euro and World Cup matches, and 10 clean sheets. Fans hate it, but it's really effective.

Is England's defense that good, or are they facing weak attacking teams?

Goals scored:

Group A = 17
Group B = 14
Group C = 7
Group D = 15

Group E = 10
Group F = 12

E and F still have 1 more round to play.
