2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (2 Viewers)

Quicker scenarios for advancement tomorrow.
Group D: Netherlands and France have clinched.
Austria advances unless they lose by 5 or more (in which case hooray for Hungary)

Group C: England is through.

Denmark and Slovenia definitely advance if their respective games end in a tie.

Serbia can finish 3rd even with a tie (see page 14 of thread) and if they do they will not yet be eliminated.

An England win and Serbia/Denmark NOT being a draw will put Hungary through if the morning games don't (and otherwise would put through an Austria team that would have lost by 5+). Most importantly it would keep the 2-point advancement scenario alive :excited:

Croatia will be officially eliminated unless Slovenia and Denmark both lose by 3+, possibly 4+ or Slovenia loses by 3+ and Serbia loses.

The opening part of this espn article gave me a laugh:

His expression when posing with the UEFA Man of the Match Award said it all. Part medieval oil painting -- the suffering peasant who thought he'd escaped the Black Death only to find his village burned to the ground -- part battle-weary warrior turned to stone by the Basilisk's gaze, part "I'm chucking this stupid piece of metal out the window because it's meaningless now that we've lost.

Enjoy this summer for the US because for the next two years, this is what we get

==========================

Sept 7: USMNT vs. Canada in Kansas City
Sept 10: USMNT vs. New Zealand in Cincinnati
Oct 12: USMNT vs. Panama in Austin

what is the root reason for a player who gets a 2nd yellow card in a separate game, being sent off for the next game and not the current game instead?

what's the history behind it?

It's insane how much difference there is between the top 2-3 teams in the world and the USMNT.

France just brought in 3 substitutes.... Olivier Giroud, Eduardo Camavinga, and Antoine Griezmann. Two of those would be the greatest USMNT player of all time had they played for the US and one of them is one of the best players 21 and younger in the world.

Its particularly harsh in tournaments - but it is to punish persistent fouling.

In a league setting, players are not suspended for 2 YCs in separate games.

But, 2YCs in a single game does result in an immediate sending off (and suspended for the next game).

In tournaments - the YC accumulation stats are re-set after the QFs - primarily to avoid players being suspended for the Final.

Really just an attempt to keep play exciting and fluid. If there was no 2 yellow rule, then less talented teams could basically foul any time a dangerous attack started. Carrying it over to multiple games is just the tournament trying to go further in promoting fluid football, especially as at the group stage there can be large gulfs in quality.

I hate the retake rule. Lewa stutters and nearly stops 15 times in his runup and he gets a retake because Maignan is 2 inches off the line as he kicks it.

It's designed to keep beauty-hating thugs from dominating the players everyone actually wants to watch. If every player on the field can accumulate a yellow every game, a big underdog or a team that wants to nullify a great player can just kick them into oblivion for 90 minutes.

Search Youtube for what Maradona had to endure back in the 80s to see how much better things are today (not just the change above, but it's part of the same idea -- let the top players play and reward skill).

As it stands, this is a good set of results for England.

If England win today - it puts France, Germany, Spain and Portugal in the other half of the bracket.

A great read on the stadium attendance
CONMEBOL, the South American soccer confederation, typically controls all ticket sales for the Copa América, like UEFA does for the Euros. But for this 2024 tournament in the U.S., it has turned over sales to individual stadiums and their partners, either Ticketmaster or Seatgeek. None of those entities have any vested interest in growing the sport of soccer. So they have used dynamic pricing, and all involved — from the brokers to the stadiums to CONMEBOL and CONCACAF and even the U.S. Soccer Federation — will get a cut of the winnings, while fans’ wallets bleed.

Ticketmaster is the worst.

Dynamic pricing is one of the most hated tech developments in my lifetime. It's undoubtedly a long term negative for music and sports events.

Austria-Holland has been a phenomenal game.

I've been very impressed by Austria throughout the group phase. Maybe United should take a look at this Rangnick fellow.

Same. I kind of laughed at their high Euro ranking in some of these lists but I stand corrected. They have really impressed. Hope they continue this brand of football.

England will be pleased with that first half, considering the players only met for the first time this afternoon, had never trained together and didn't have time for a tactical talk before kickoff. Top tip for 2nd half: maybe someone could move off the ball? #ENGSLO 0-0
We should all root for England to suck because England fans are so great at being angry about it.
