Argentina have advanced

Canada advances with
A win vs Chile
Or
A tie vs Chile and a Peru loss/tie vs Argentina
Canada is out with a loss

Chile advances with

Or
A win vs Canada and a Peru win vs Argentina by the same margin and Chile scores more goals than Peru
Or A win vs Canada and a Peru win vs Argentina by the same exact score and better discipline (Red cards then yellow cards: Peru 1 Red, Chile 0 Red, Peru 1 Yellow, Chile 5 Yellow). Otherwise lucky ping pong balls.

Peru is definitely out with a tie or loss or Canada win.

Mex Ven was a fun watch.

And Mex looked much better than last game. still trying to figure themselves out, especially defensively, but thought they played well and dictated things. Excellent defending from Ven kept them in the game- and they fought hard for a deserved result.

The little guy Soteldo can flat out play. I always wondered why Toronto gave up on him after only one season. Rondon is getting up their in age but his bull in a china shop style still works.

I was not at all familiar with Bello (who when looking him up has had a relatively quiet career) but his energy popped off the screen last night.

England is running a tight ship, as the results have shown

They produced the second lowest xG offensively
They were the #1 team in xG against.

I've been watching the mex ven game in the background. Seems like it's been... testy.
Yes and no. It is being played at a super high pace so there has been some hard tackles but compared to other Copa games, this one has a flow to it and is not stopped every three seconds with a foul.
The pace at the start at the game was bananas. And they mostly continued it aside from some lull at the start of the second half. Fun game.

Impressive win. I always pegged Venezuela for a baseball country.
Baseball is their #1 sport, but they've been steadily getting better in soccer over the last 15 years. They are clearly a step up over Bolivia, which was the other bottom dweller in CONMEBOL.

Being on a new project at work with the Euros going on during the day sucks.
  • Spain and Austria have looked the best - Austria incredibly well given what most would have expected or thought of their talent.
  • Germany and Portugal have looked decent at times and average at times.
  • France, England, Belgium and Italy have been pretty brutal - especially the first two.
  • England with a nice draw but honestly, once you get to the quarters in the Euros you are always going to get huge matches barring r16 upsets.
  • England v Italy, Germany v Spain, France v Portugal, Netherlands v Austria - yes please.
I'm one of the few unabashed England fans on the board. I still like their chances if their attack can get going. And it won't be because of Southgate but because they just have so much talent with Kane, Foden, Bellingham and Saka. Also, tons of experience in the side. I wouldn't be shocked if they lose to Slovakia but definitely surprised - but also could see them back in the final.

This is the key. Not sure if it can happen with Kane, Jude, and Foden all liking to get into the same space and only Saka to run in behind. It might be worth it to sit Foden or Bellingham and get a runner on the left.

Are we expecting any changes for game 2 to the US line up?

I wonder if Berhalter sees this game the same way I do - it is a "Must-not-lose" game to keep his job. Which means I think he has to go with the players he trusts the most to get a result - which I assume would be the same team he put out against Bolivia.

Maybe I could see a change a striker - but, I would not risk many changes if I were in Berhalter's shoes.

These types of tournaments are often won based on not letting goals in versus scoring them. Kane is as prolific as #9s get, Jude has a frustrating knack for popping up in front of goal, and the draw is favorable...they're in a decent spot.

Haha El Tri fans celebrating like they won the tournament because of a VAR PK call.....and they miss it
It was even more hilarious because it was one of those PK's that while by the letter of the rule you pretty much have to give it, it feels kind of cheap. That ball was going to miss the goal by what, 30 feet? It would have been such a lame way to level the match.

That said, they put a lot of pressure on Venezuela at the end and it's still hard to fathom how they didn't score on at least one of those chances, like the one where the CB completely whiffed and the ball dropped right to Mex in front of the goalie.

I bet we see a similar lineup v Panama as we did against the overmatched Bolivians. And in game three we see a midfield with more bite in it. I expect us to go for it vs Uruguay either way though.

If they win they are through correct?
If so, then I would say they shouldn't change, go get the win and rotate for Uruguay.

But then again, not sure I can see anyone being better to start then what was there.

Technically no the US doesn't clinch with just a win. They clinch with a win and a Uruguay win/tie

If Uruguay loses to Bolivia there can still be a 3-way tie with USA, Uruguay and Bolivia all with 6 points. A bad enough loss to Uruguay in that scenario could knock us down to 3rd in this scenario.

I'm not sure about his job but would say under no circumstances can we go into the third game needing a result to get through. That means its a must-win game tonight. Ideally, we could achieve a large enough goal differential such that a draw in the third game would see us top the group, but I think that ship sailed with Pepe's multiple misses on Sunday. Most likely, Uruguay thrashes Bolivia tonight anyway and we'll need a win for first place Monday but a draw or loss will get us through in second.

I have an off the wall question.
We’ve seen players of note go on to become coaches/managers, and even team front office officials. Have any players that would be recognized become game officials after their playing career?

I thought I read recently that there were a few former players working on their ref certs. But then again it could have been in the NFL or the NBA...

It doesn't feel like any do though.

As you guys predicted, the lineup for the US is identical tonight

I wonder if Adams will be extended to 60 minutes tonight, depending on game state....
starting the same line up in back to back games is not common for GGG

======================
Berhalter starts the same XI that faced Bolivia on Sunday night. It’s the first time he has started the same lineup in back-to-back matches since the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup Quarterfinal and Semifinal against Jamaica and Qatar, respectively.
