2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (3 Viewers)

Balogun making a great case for the folks who want us to play a 4-4-2. He's immediately a millions miles more dangerous when we're not pushing everything down the wings. Balogun with CP playing off him might be $$. And it would let you have Reyna and McKennie in the midfield with a pair of mids behind them (have a seat Tim).

4-4-2 is outdated but it really suits our players. No other formation puts the best talent on the field in their best positons.

Does our coach not instruct the players what offsides is? This is amateur hour.

Some teams and usually players will live on the offside trap line. Balogun is one of those guys from my somewhat limited watching him. I’d be more ok with it if we had the team/style to send him in with passes but that’s not really us.

He was money his first season in France doing exactly that.

The goal that got wiped out was just a dumb violation. Could (and should) have been called a 2nd time and the 3rd violation is just head scratching to me.

Dumber red card?

Dest or Weah?

Easily Dest, IMO. Weah was an idiot but if he pushed out like that half a foot lower he probably isn’t sent off. He deserved it but wasn’t as dumb as Dest.
Situation matters too.

I don't think the Dest red hurt us as much as this one might...

Honestly wasn’t factoring situation in - I’d maybe go Weah because I don’t really care about Nations League

I wonder if playing in top leagues in Europe where fouls are called much closer hurts our young players like Weah and Dest? MLS guys deal with grabbing and pushing every game. These guys don't and this is now the second time it's affected us in a big way.

So much inconsistency from the ref. If you're going to be bad or call it tight, do it all game... not selectively. I see this one getting ugly.

Weah... so dumb. Just aim lower, don't hit above the shoulders. Still haven't seen anything that could've set him off. The replay of him walking away is telling. He looked pissed and didn't care.

I like the idea of pulisic at the 9. Take of Reyna, add aaronson and play a 5-3-1 or 441.

So, let’s assume we can hold out for a point. We then root for a draw in the next match, right? Or do we want Uruguay to win and qualify and possibly rest guys?

Turner didn't play that goal well. That was at least part on him. An elite goalie stops that shot.
I dunno. Ball bouncing around, Megs Richards and nips the post. Solid shot and would've taken a hell of a save. Not on Turner there.
Nope. It took him too long to read that spot was the only place it could go. He was slow getting to the side and alow getting down.
I think it's more that the CONMEBOL refs aren't calling much in this tournament and letting a lot go.

He punched the Panama player in the back of the head. It was an easy red card for ref once he saw the right angle.

This is Ivan Barton. He's a CONCACAF guy. Last year he reffed the US/Mexico semifinal game and he let that game become almost a bloodbath if you remember. This is his MO. He's pretty lax on calling fouls, or at least has been in the US games he's reffed. Teams like Mexico and now Panama obviously take advantage of that.

Our best path right now is going for 5 points and ignore the result from later tonight.

If we lose, we are in big trouble. We have to beat Uruguay and pray Panama does not get a big win against Bolivia, which is certainly possible.

Not disputing that... if he hits him between the shoulder blades it's a yellow most likely. Above the shoulders insta red.

But no call on the keeper collision.... no yellow on the 3 fouls in one play, etc. Don't be a card bada** then not pull it when you should.

I'm terrible at this, but it seems to me they are going to thump Bolivia by 4 or 5 tonight. Panama will win on Monday for sure. If we draw tonight, we will have to at least draw with Uruguay on Monday and then hope our measly +2 gd holds up. Again, for me its all on Pepe missing those sitters.

5-3-1... Just hoping to hang onto a tie?

I don't like it. Really hope to be wrong, but this doesn't set them up for anything in the opposing third.

If we get to 5 points, Panama can't..

Yeah, GGG is going with game theory. The best chance to advance is with 5 points.

I don't see the US holding on the whole half for a point though.

I'm not up to snuff on our player personnel, do we have the wheels to counter attack?

Can't just sit and absorb pressure, hopefully we can pop the top off and counter a few times.

If Panama is going to keep four defenders back behind our one forward, that's a plus too

I don’t necessarily agree with Reyna coming out. So creative
This is survive or die. Very little chance for creativity.
I believe he would give them a chance for a moment of brilliance. He’s played defensive as of late and don’t view him as a liability in that role. Do you?
I thought Reyna played hard defensively in the first half but looking at the formation and tactics, I think he would be minimized.
