2024 Summer of Soccer - Euro's, Copa America, Olympics, WCQing (7 Viewers)

Fascinating game tonight

Brazil win and they draw Panama
Brazil tie and they draw Uruguay
Brazil lose and small chance to be out of tournament.

Wow, that Turkish keeper is up there with Costa. Amazing work

OMG! Save of the tourney!!!

Holy XXXX! what a save!

That was incredible. So, so fun... And that save- good gravy!

The xG Philosophy

@xGPhilosophy

Austria’s last minute header was worth 0.94(xGOT). In other words, a goalkeeper would only be expected to save the effort 6% of the time.

Not that US Soccer even knows its own history but if GGG gets sacked, this will now be the 4th times since the mid 2000's. that a second cycle coach has failed.

Literally 4 in a row.

Arena in 2006 cycle (finished dead last in the WC)
Bradley in 2014 cycle (sacked early in cycle before he made it to qualifying)
Klinsmann in 2018 cycle (sacked before the ultimately failed qualification was completed)
GGG in 2024 cycle (may be sacked 2 years before WC)
Maybe they will learn something. Effing coglioni

Maybe the Messi model is the way to go if we want to land a Klopp level name.

US Soccer can still claim to pay the exact same amount to each coach, and then let a sponsor quietly cover the rest.
They are already wearing NIKE jerseys. Phil Knight - come on down and make NIKE a monster again.

Phil Knight is 85, has had his net worth sliced in half the last year and has only one sports' goal on his mind - Ducks football for the Natty. Not the droid this team should be looking for.

Yeah people ain't been checking Nike stock price

The ref refused to shake Pulisic's hand at the end of the game. I have to assume Pulisic had some choice words for him during the game he did not forget.

Well, just another example of this ref being out of his depth. Wonder if the US will protest?

Not a great look for Pulisic in this clip either. Is he motioning to the ref to go celebrate with Uruguay? As captain he also needs the be an adult and show some professionalism.

A bit of video from just prior - seemingly showing more of Pulsic telling the ref to go celebrate with Uruguay.

I saw that earlier and was going to post it.

Some saying that's what he said, others saying he was telling the refs to come to the middle of the field.

Either way, even if he says that, it's classless from a ref, who should be impartial, to behave that way. We've seen refs get yelled at/treated far worse and you just don't do that.

That ref had no business being on the field in that role last night and that snub was just the cherry on top of an embarrassing display.

Listening to this pregame show, they're bringing up the Olympic team and how they too are not ready for the next step.

Any of you USMNT honks here give a quick summary of our youth teams coming up?

@prefontaine has the most knowledge here of the younger generation.

I can tell you the Olympic team is very likely to struggle for a few reasons.

Players like Gio, Musah, Pepi, Johnny, Scally, Lund, Tillman, and Balogun are all eligible for the Olympics but since they are all on the full National team, it is unlikely they will play in the Olympics.

Also, it is expected that many teams are going to refuse to release players for the Olympics.

We do have plenty of unpolished diamonds that hopefully will be ready for the 2030 cycle. One is at Liverpool right now, Kyrol Figueroa. And you have likely heard of Cavan Sullivan who was just signed by Man City (he is still just 14). If you have not heard of him, I highly recommend a google and watch some highlights.

I think the biggest problem is that the U.S. can't show their *** in games like all these piss-ant countries we have to deal with. We can't play physical without repercussions then roll around if we get breathed on wrong and get penalties called in our favor. It's never going to be a level playing field for us, so instead of hiring set piece coaches, we need ****housery coaches. I want more players with attitudes like Dempsey and Hoppe out there, who will get under their opponents' skin and get fouled so bad that even CONMEBOL refs cringe.

We've been playing this commoner's game like gentlemen long enough, it's time we got down and dirty.
Agree. I really liked Hoppe for what he brought and was bummed he didn’t get called up for the World Cup.

They are missing a player that bring some more nastiness to the pitch.

I was reading online that it is so hot at the Brazil Colombia game that the ticket scanners overheated and stopped working.

It will be unlikely to see a high paced game tonight but crazier things have happened.

Phenomenal start to this Brazil Colombia game. Ridiculous amount of talent on the field for a group stage game.

The Colombian fans have been amazing this summer.

And sorry if I came off a bit angry last night.

Still think GGG should go. It's just time. Agree though that there isn't a huge pool to choose from. But it's time. When's the last time after a tournament or big match anyone just said "GGG got it right"? Seems like it's always "ok. Who's our next coach?" Always.

Olympic wise, Andy pretty much nails it. Our top end age-eligible players won't be there. And the next group is going to be missing a few guys because of release issues. Everyone has these problems though so no telling. I don't think our coach is impressive nor is he going to take the best 18, so I'm not optimistic.

By 2030, our next generation will all be breaking through. Too far out to project at this point imo. Our 2008/2009 classes though are unlike anything we've ever seen with the breadth and depth. And with the 04 and 06 GKs and 06 CB class ahead of them, they may all mature together. But that cohort is too young to be core even by 2030 but they should push the current group pretty hard.
