______ Passed Away Today, RIP (3 Viewers)

This might be someone some of you know. He was a very popular traveling preacher in the Calvary chapel family of churches. I don’t know if he was active outside of that. But he was a sweet and genuine believer.

Gayle Dean Erwin
Servant of Jesus Christ
9/2/1938 - 4/15/2025

Our dad has entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ … a perfect culmination of a life of service in Christ’s name.

His children,
Gloria, Angela, Valerie, Clyde

Memorial service information pending.

Pope Francis, 88.
I’m in Rome and am supposed to have a tour of the Sistine Chapel this evening. Historic moment for the kiddos to witness. Bells have been ringing.
That will certainly be memorable.

Seems like this one probably deserves its own thread.
We do have a Pope Francis thread. Was discussion of his illness there earlier this year. Would need to search for it.

Just an observation, but I think he'd be the last one to say that. A very humble man who made some changes in the Church that I hope will be lasting.
🤞
early thoughts here are that the church will become more centric again and support for liberal ideology will wain. i have 3 nights coming in rome may 9-12 and i have an outside chance, if things go well, of maybe seeing the new pope sunday the 11th. i think the timing works. i am hopeful that the next pope is not already past 75 yrs of age.

Rock producer Roy Thomas Baker was behind the glass for some classic recordings by Queen and the Cars.

I never owned top of the line sound, but I could still separate the good producers. This guy's production was so clean.

Mike Peters, lead singer of The Alarm, 66. Really good band in its day.

30 years battling blood cancer - brutal.

Peters pulled off one of the all-time musical hoaxes in 2004 when he released "45 RPM" credited to a fictional teenage band called The Poppy Fields. The forty something Peters and The Alarm only revealed themselves as the actual musicians after the song became a hit in the UK.

Only know two songs by The Alarm but they're both pretty great - Rain In The Summertime and Rescue Me.
Two other great ones you may have heard:

Sixty-Eight Guns:

Strength:

There’s also of course “The Stand”, which was inspired by the Stephen King novel. The video got a lot of airplay in the early MTV days and was, for many like myself, the first intro to the band:

Mets fan, Seymour Weiner.

A bit about him here:

Sounds like a Jerky Boys character
Or a Bart Simpson prank call to Moe the Bartender

I was thinking more like Porky's.

Ruth Buzzi, 88

That is someone I had not thought about in a loooong, long time.
You missed out on a good opportunity to break out the Obi-wan Kenobi quote: "Ruth Buzzi... now that's a name I've not heard in a long time"

Ed Van Impe, a defenseman on the Flyers’ Broad Street Bullies teams, died at age 84.

He was their captain before Bobby Clarke and played on both Stanley Cup champions.

The most memorable moment of his career was probably when the Soviet Union left the ice during their exhibition game against the Flyers in protest of a hard but legal body check Van Impe threw.

After retiring, he became a member of the Flyers’ broadcast team and was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.

Jim Dent, pioneering Black golfer and one of the PGA's longest hitters, dies at 85. Although he never won on the PGA tour, Dent was one of the best Black golfers of his generation.

oh man, he was one of the 60s "bombers" ...whenever he was in an article it was typically about his driving prowess - and he won the first two "World Long Drive Contests". He was a key figure on the senior tour when it started and won a number of times.

I used to watch him play in person at the old GHO (now Travelers) back in the 80's. Big dude with a beautiful, effortless looking swing. The 18th hole where they play the Travelers used to have a cart part running through the fairway that was about 100-120 yards or so from the green. Most guys wouldn't get close to it back then but Dent hit it past it. I remember it even made the paper because it was so rare for anyone to reach that far down the fairway on 18. Nowadays pretty much every player gets it down that far so they eventually removed the cart path. RIP "Big Boy".

Here's a short video of Dent and John Daly in a long drive contest in '94. Dent is 54-55 years old here.

Rip Jim Smith.
James Carl Jobb (October 8, 1954 – May 2, 2025), known professionally as Jim Smith, was an American animator and musician. He co-developed The Ren & Stimpy Show (from which he departed in 1992 alongside Kricfalusi) in 1991 and The Ripping Friends in 2001.
