______ Passed Away Today, RIP (4 Viewers)

John Amos

Immortalized in my mind as Cleo McDowall…RIP.
Turns out he (and Potsie) did learn everything they know from the big competitor:

From Good Times, to Coming to America, to the West Wing…he always brought it to whatever role.

And one of my favorite movies as a kid, The Beastmaster.

Been sitting here trying to figure out what I knew him from, and it wasn’t anything you listed. It was his role as Lisa’s father in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (and later Will’s stepdad).

My thoughts on Pete are to this day still very mixed. As a Reds fan growing up, he was considered larger than life. I was obviously a fan and focused a still have a large collection of Pete cards and memorabilia I collected as a kid. I was very pro-HOF for a long time, but started to sour at some point because Pete just couldn't help but continue to say stupid stuff. My mind has changed also from "not betting on his own team means he didn't do anything wrong" to understanding how is planned betting may have led him to make managerial decisions he otherwise wouldn't have.

I can't say I'm a fan of him as a person, but there's not many people I'd rather listen to talking about baseball.
I was really impressed with ARod at the :32 part where he says "no, tell me" and when Frank Thomas at the end says "That's Church, that's why you got 4,200 hits.

MLB pitching legend Luis Tiant, 83

If you grew up in the '70s, it was obligatory to perfect his unique spinning pitching motion.

My all-time favorite Luis Tiant story, from his former teammate Bill Lee's autobiography:
Tiant was also great to have in the clubhouse. God, I loved being around him. He was a sensitive and funny man who kept everybody in the clubhouse loose. He could criticize a player in a way that nobody found offensive. Once Harper pulled a rock in the outfield, costing us a few runs in a game we lost. When we came into the locker room, everybody was upset. Luis got up off his chair to go to the john. He took a dump, flushed the toilet, and yelled, “Goodbye, Tommy!” It broke up everyone and took the edge off a tough loss.
I think of that story whenever I'm dealing with some sort of temporary setback. Just flush the toilet and move on.

El Tiante was the starting pitcher for Cleveland in the first MLB game I ever attended. He took a lead into the 7th but gave up a couple of unearned runs and got tagged with the L.

The White Sox used to play a few home games a year in Milwaukee County Stadium in the years between the Braves and Brewers.

Harry Chappas the diminutive White Sox shortstop who got a pre-season Sports Illustrated cover story in 1979 died last month at the age of 66.

Chappas was 5'5" but owner Bill Veeck thought the story would work better if he was even smaller, so he was officially listed as 5'3". Unfortunately, Chappas got off to a bad start and was sent to the minors before the end of April. He hit better when he was recalled that August but another bad start in 1980 marked the end of his MLB career at 22.

You old guys won’t know who this is. But if you have 20-30yo daughters be prepared

Net Worth of $70M
31 years of age
Falls off a building in Beunos Aires
Poor guy
Articles are saying he was acting aggressive (smashed his laptop) and had to be carried back to his room from the lobby. They suspect he was under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Police were then called and he was found.

Paul Di’Anno 66 - original singer for Iron Maiden on the first two albums, replaced by Bruce Dickenson.

While they morphed into a much bigger, richer sound, I also really liked the early raw Maiden with Di'Anno. He just didn't have the powerhouse voice they wanted - hence the entry of Bruce Dickinson. RIP

Not to take away from how great Bruce Dickenson is but Di'Anno will always be my favorite Maiden vocalist.
RIP :banned:

Early Maiden was great but Bruce’s vocals took the band to another level.

The Dodgers really worked Fernando hard in his first six seasons (age 20-26)

1981 192.3 IP (1st in NL, shortened season)
1982 285.0 (2nd)
1983 257.0 (5th)
1984 261.0 (2nd)
1985 272.3 (3rd)
1986 269.3 (2nd)
1987 251.0 (3rd)

Ugh. Sometimes I wish I never opened this thread. 85-87, fresh out of college, worked for a company that had season seats. My immediate boss had the responsibility of caring for them and hated it, so she delegated them to me. They were mostly for impressing VIPs, but it was pretty easy to use them myself. 95% of the MLB games I've seen live were 85-87. I made a concerted effort to see Fernando every chance I could. He was fun to watch and so unique. Also the same age as me. Sad to see this.

Fernando Valenzuela LHP RIP

One of my earliest memories of Baseball was Valenzuela and the 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers

-Back in those days you didn't have social media and he was being talked about on TV shows you never heard mention sports
And then Valenzuela and the Dodgers had an amazing post season run
I believe they capped that with a 4-2 World Series victory over the New York Yankees, these two teams will see each other in the World Series laster this week

'81- He pitched the 1st game of the Division Series vs Nolan Ryan and the Houston Astros , Fernando was 20 years old
Valenzuela pitched 8 innings and allowed 1 run
Nolan Ryan pitched 9 innings and allowed 1 run
A young Dodgers pitcher that was not a starting pitcher yet by the name of Dave Stewart came out to pitch the 9th inning and lost the game 3-1
Houston would go up 2-0 in a 5 game Div Series and end up losing to the Dodgers in 5 games
Stewart would go on to be a starting pitcher in the late 80s and WON 20 GAMES B2B2B2B or 4 seasons in a row...

His passing brought back a lot of memories for me

That's such a sad irony of his passing right now, a few days before the first meeting of the teams in the World Series since his highly successful rookie year. I saw pictures of him recently and couldn't believe it was him - clearly his health was failing him quickly.

RIP to one of the more legendary figures in MLB history - who can ever forget his side look to the heavens upon his pitching delivery. He doesn't need a delivery now to look around there in peace.

Stewart and Valenzuela also threw no hitters on the same day. It’s the first thing I thought of when I saw this because that’s a very early memory for me.

Fernando Valenzuela LHP RIP

I also wanted to say that I was 7 years old when fernandomania started and that moment in time brought people from all walks of life together
People from different races, cultures, it was a treat to watch him pitch and his look up into the sky was something that united everyone

I can think of a few times these things happen but not often and this was on top of the fact that he was just so GD good on the mound throwing a baseball
Hall of Fame level from '81-'85

there was something in the air that night fernando is one of my favorites but he is far short of 300 wins far short of 3000 strike outs and is nearly a point high in terms of era so the awards and his first season are really the best arguments he has for the hall of fame so should he be in or what take that to the bank bromigos

Also was an underrated hitter, which one wouldn't have expected with his hitting form. Lifetime .200 average (not bad for a pitcher) with 10 HRs.

He was breathing through his eyelids like the lava lizards of the Galapagos Islands.
