Attempting to Drive from RI to Kansas in 24 hours today (1 Viewer)

Indiana is awful btw
Worst state I've driven through. I once ended up driving a rental through France. So much of France reminds me of driving through Indiana. Terribly boring.
The midwest is a rough stretch to drive on the highways, sorry midwesterners, although 5 in California is no thrill either

Kansas is the worst state to drive though IMO, never feels like its gonna end
You've never drive through western nebraska, have you?
Ive done both 80 and 70 in their entirety, so I actually have. They are similar I guess, Kansas stood out to me as never ending though, might have just been that point in the roadtrip.

Indiana and Pennsylvania like that for me.
Pennsylvania kind of sucks I agree.

I mean none of these are great. if you aren't driving down route 1 in California, driving long stretches really isnt that nice

I'm probably just spoiled with RI's beauty. And Garden City.

I know regular Nebraska. I love Atlantic City and Johnny 99. Never heard the western version unfortunately.

On a serious note, the first leg of this trip has physically and mentally destroyed me. I am in agony with neck disc nerve pain, shaking from withdrawal or something, and losing my mind from no sleep. I am kinda hyperventilating from the chilis steak fajita add ons and guac crap I was probably allegic to. I'm a nervous wreck about the trip back home. Not sure when that will be.

West Texas would like to have a word.

I knew a kid who moved to Marfa with his girl. They didn't last long there and moved back home. Then they split. Yeah, it's cursed.

Ever driven in the ugly part of California? Particularly, Needles to Victorville? Eesh.

Driving 24 hours straight is no joke. At our ages, you need drugs to be able do that

Maybe in your 20s it wasn't as much an issue but can't imagine doing it now

Wow, genuinely trying to imagine what those two places must look like then.

They don't look like anything. That's the problem. No trees, no mountains, flat nothing. At least you can see some mountains trekking across the Socal desert.

We lived in the Mojave desert while my dad attended Test Pilot School. El Paso to San Antonio or Dallas is worse than anything else by far. Imagine Phoenix to Yuma with less places to stop and twice the distance.

Don't forget the dead armadillos and oil derricks in Texas...

I did 1,200 miles in 24 hours. Beat that.

2 rest stops, the longer one for like an hour I think, is all.

So I averaged like 55 MPH, I guess. Started and ended in bumper to bumper traffic. The WORST two parts. All of which means I was flying, especially during the night.

Red Bull helped.

2400 miles in 12 hours is averaging 200 mph.
The astounding fact is that he ran it.

West Texas is the worst. May as be on the moon. And El Paso to San Antonio. Endless

Back when I was a worthless pup, I spent a couple of months delivering "wholesale" car radios from North Carolina to Maryland for a friend. Best I did was 3 trips from MD to Raleigh (& back) in 26 hours. I could do 2 Charlotte trips in a 24 hour period (there were only a couple of those, and there was one Atlanta run I'd rather forget). Black Beauties, cocaine, and coffee. I know I must have eaten since I'm still alive, but I have no recall of it. I got paid $600 per trip.

Probably met each other along I70 somewhere yesterday. :drive:You have more gumption than I do. Younger me would have no problem with it, but there is no way I could do it now. We did NW Iowa to Canton last year on a last minute power trip to the HOF for my birthday (approx 13 hours ) and the last hour of that trip was brutal.

I drive west texas a few times a year, Houston to El Paso and also in northern west texas around amarillo.

The west texas drive from San Antonio to El Paso is one of the easiest drives in the country, no traffic and fast speed limits. Just set the cruise at 92 and listen to podcasts. No where else in the country can you cover as much ground as quickly as you can in west texas.

I would rather drive i10 from Houston to El Paso than Houston to Pensacola Florida.

Apparently so. Is that the new rocket fuel formula?

biggest trips have been our move from the bay area to breckenridge (good weather). one stop in provo, ut. 1100 miles
when we moved back, the drive was in april... a lot of snow and sleet in co, utah, and the sierras with big trucks. it definitely extended the drive.

purchased my current car in WA and drove down to Sonoma county with only a stop for gas. 800 miles, about 10-11 hrs.

Just checking in to session one, it starts in thirty minutes. There are six sessions over three days total Looks to be solid talent warming up for 2005 boys. I think we are the only fools that drove here. 😀

Not alot of forest here. I keep waiting for Tate from yellowstone to run into traffic or something. Pretty hot now, we haven't hit ninety much if at all in RI. Still haven't seen any Overlords roaming around.

It's almost 1pm here. It just occurred to me it may not be 1pm et. I better check that.

Anyone have any advice if I need to crash in the car for a couple of hours. If everything stays true, I'm 13-14 hours until indy. I should probably power nap just before that if possible. It will be like 2-3am. Thoughts?

Would like to avoid the seven minute ab guy at a rest stop. Can you still sleep in Walmart lots? Seems scary fwiw.
Most Walmarts allow overnight parking, if you want to be sure you can call ahead and ask them, they have a 1 night rule. Some have banned it because the van life/vagabond crowd took advantage of it and set up camp for days at a time. Truck stops usually allow it, and I believe Cracker Barrels do too. If you are concerned about safety just park near another RV or semi, safety in numbers. Walmart usually has a security patrol and good lighting. I have napped there outside of Denver, SLC, and Tucson on cross country drives and never had any issues other than it being hot as balls in Tucson.

One thing I learned from watching Cannonball videos is do not speed through Ohio, they make a living off of ticketing out of state plates.
if you stop at a parnera you could get a tasty and healthy meal and a nap and that is a good news double wammy right there take that to the bank bromigos

Panera is surprisingly very unhealthy.
well its better than crackerlesterol barrel you have to give me that counselor take that to the bank bromigo

Nebraska was the worst when I did a kc to long Beach trip in college

Recently, Elko, NV to Vegas is brutal. No one at all and literally looks like the moon the entire way

My son and I are going to drive from RI to Kansas (New Century, KS) for futsal. Planning on leaving at 1pm today, a little worried about CT Beach traffic and NYC slowing us down. I haven't really planned a route, rest spots, or much of anything. Figured just rock the waze and go west. We booked a hotel for a Monday 3pm check in In Overlord Park area.
This is where I live. (I assume you mean Overland Park. Though I consider myself the Overlord of the area).

Where is the tournament going to be?
New Century Field House in New Century (551 New Century Pkwy, New Century, KS) Its actually tryouts for the national team to see who gets invited to France tournament. Should be interesting.
Good luck to your son!

Did Denver to Chicago and back twice in the last year. Sterling CO to the Iowa border on 76 and 80 is rough. I find Iowa to be nice to look at, but 80 is packed with trucks.

HUGE development. It just occurred to me we may have passed by one of the elusive Taco Bells that still carry the Chilito, aka chili cheese burritos on the way here. If anyone has any information on that it would be incredible. I told my son he may not want to try one if we do find it. Otherwise it will haunt his dreams for years like me.

Put The Wall on shuffle for the whole trip.

Seriously though, drive safely and you’ll definitely be aggravated by traffic until you get well west of NYC.
Is there a GOOD time to drive by NYC? I may try for a north route to start and get to Cuomo bridge, then avoid Garden State parkway at all costs. That's how I see it anyway.
Between 9PM till 3AM. Friend did this on the overnight and got to Florida in 24hrs from New England.

I'm in Chili's in Olaf (Olathe?) RIGHT NEXT TO ONE. OMG OMG OMG!!!

The thought of Chiltos next to the hotel I slept in last night is quite the head job. Check please!

I'm super jealous. The closest one to me is six hours away, and not on the way to anywhere, so I'll never just happen by it. I haven't had one in years

They brought them back to the northeast like ten years ago. They said it was permanent, but I knew. It ate there every day at least twice a day, it was glorious. After two weeks they were gone as fast as they came. Everyone was devastated. But I probably had fifty of them and I was at peace. But now I am shaken with the thought of them being so close by....
