Can we discuss pet peeves here? (4 Viewers)

People that ask you a question but then don't let you answer. One guy in particular I work with is horrible about this, whether it be work or personal life related. He'll ask a question, then before I can answer he'll launch into an explanation of why he's asking the question, but he gets sidetracked on the explanation and ends up changing the subject so then it's awkward if I drag the conversation backward to answer the thing he asked me 5 minutes ago. It's exhausting talking to him.

In a hurry at hotel…wait for 12 people to get off of elevator stopping at every floor…room card doesn't work…ride back down to wait in line to get card refreshed is 10 of the most annoying minutes i can think of.

Speaking of elevators...The people that are waiting to get on the elevator who walk right up to the doors when they open as you are trying to get off. Bro let me out first.

Airline baggage claims.

In Hawaii for the week. Had a short layover in Kona before arriving here in Waikiki. Our bag didn’t get put on the connecting flight.

We figured no big deal. There are about a dozen puddle jumper flights a day and delta assured us it would get put on one and delivered to the hotel.

3 days later now and still no bag. It’s been confirmed that it’s in Kona but according to the person on the phone “it’s in the office next door and we have to wait for them to bring it to us.” That made me livid but I settled for just saying they are really good at ruining vacations. Total incompetence.

Athletes that spit every 5 seconds. Where is all that disgusting crap coming from?

You ever workout lol? Don’t ever watch a hockey game btw..

You spitting somewhere every 5 seconds while you are working out in a gym? How about basketball players, or tennis players, or really, and indoor sport athlete

I wish I could. When I run outside yes.

“When you exercise, your sympathetic nervous system kicks in. The flow of saliva may increase but it also increases in thickness and stickiness. This is what can make it hard to swallow and drives runners to spit it out. The thickness increases for three reasons:

  1. Protein release. Exercise, of any intensity, increases the production of certain salivary proteins including one called MUC5B which increases in amount immediately after exercise. When protein concentration of saliva is increased it makes it thicker. Think of it as having more gravy powder in your jug of hot water.
  2. Dehydration. If you become dehydrated, your body wants to preserve water wherever it can. Reducing the water content of saliva is a good way to do this. Saliva thickens as a result and it can leave you with a sticky yet dry mouth. You have the same amount of gravy powder but less water.
  3. Mouth breathing. Most runners breathe through their mouths, especially during higher intensity exercise. Your body wants to keep your mouth moist and because the air is drying it out, the glands produce more saliva. However the saliva that it there is thicker because the water content reduces by evaporation. It’s also possible that cold air could have a direct effect on the salivary glands causing them to excrete more mucous too.

Hockey players and football players do it because they can on ice and on the field outdoors. They show hockey players doing it a bunch since they pan the camera to the benches constantly. Indoor guys can’t so they swallow it. If they could I guarantee they would. Disclaimer I think it’s gross but I get it. And not knocking his peeve just saying there is a science behind it.

Speaking of elevators, you can avoid these issues by not taking them.

Now, there’s probably a floor limit you’re unwilling to visit by stairs, but it’s a lot of free exercise, and exit stairwells frequently deposit you in in exciting places you wouldn’t see otherwise (loading docks, the bowels of housekeeping, restaurant kitchen, and best of all, the emergency exit only, door is alarmed sign - do you feel lucky?)

I went to a strict private school for grades 5 and 6. If you spit you had to get a clean up kit and clean it up. Even on grass.

I pretty much never spit outside.

One exception to this is when I hike in the Arizona heat, the first bit of water from my camelbak is about 110 degrees. I spit that out off trail. Figure anybody stepping in that invited it upon themselves by being off trail.

I’m always down for the stairs if they are available. Also don’t mind parking further away in parking lots for a little extra walk time. Unfortunately some places have no stairs though.

Maybe not a pet peeve per se' but certainly something that's irritating and/or just confusing the heck out of me now that school's started. It's the final year of doing a kid dropoff (boy will be in middle school and will ride his bike starting next year), and I am on dropoff duty whenever I'm not out of town. I hate crowds/lines, so I tend to get my boy ready and we're out the door a few minutes before we really need to... but I like being towards the front of the line at dropoff and if I drop him off right when the gates open up, I usually avoid the mass amounts of people walking in the area. Anyways, I digress... it seems that it's the same parent who's at the front of the dropoff line who's annoying the crap out of me. We drop off along the sidewalk that runs through the back lot of the school. There's a couple of gates at a little curve in said drive aisle where you pull up, drop your spawn off and go about your way. Well, we invariably get into the queue a few minutes early and this one SUV is at the front pretty much every day. For some insane reason they stop about 1-2 car lengths BEHIND where most parents stop their vehicles to drop their kid off. Basically they are wasting at least one spot in the queue (which gets incredibly long and extends out into the street by the time it gets closer to the gates opening). I feel like driving up to them and getting out of the car to point out the 30ish feet in front of them that they could be utilizing. Or just pulling around and in front of them to wait for the gates. Anyways, long-winded rant over. I just hate dumb people.

Absolutely what I would do by day 3.

Drive around in pull in front.

One that is increasingly testing my patience is similar to this, people who leave way too much space between cars at an intersection, or very slowly close the gap. How do you not realized that this can increase the length of cars and cause backups in other intersections?

And these people at that leave a huge gap, but then continue to inch forward every few seconds. What is wrong with you?

I leave myself a big enough gap to pull around the car in front of me in case the **** hits the fan. Gotta have a getaway lane if necessary, especially these days.

Was just going to say this. There is an old adage too that says when stopped you should be able to see the car in front of you rear tires. A lot of old timers still abide by this rule. But leaving 20-30 feet is too much for sure.

I appreciate the explanation. I also think it's partially just a disgusting habit that each generation picks up from watching the last gen. Guys in a baseball dugout hanging on the railing that have exerted 0 energy just constantly spitting (not sunflower seed shells) is baffling and gross. Sip some Gatorade and swallow; not that hard.

Good posting. If stairs are an option, I always choose stairs, especially if descending. I just don't like waiting when motion and moving towards my target is an option.

Yeah, they aren’t always readily accessible, but nearly every multi-story building has stairs - finding them is part of the adventure!

Agree wrt parking. Don’t have the patience for people stalking the close aisles, or obnoxiously backing in when cars are waiting.

Any way to avoid the queue altogether, and drop-off/pick-up a couple blocks away?

When my step dad was in the hospital I ran down the stairs from the 6th floor. All of the doors were locked. You had to have a swipe card to get through them. i went up and down trying every door to no avail. Called the hospotal and they said security would be at least 10-15 minutes. I started banging on the door where I could the hear the most people. A nurse finally opened the door, laughing. :hot: she said no one takes the stairs but they do have to rescue people every once in a while.
It‘s probably because there is a newborn nursery somewhere in the hospital. Nearly every day, a “code pink” is called, meaning an infant has been abducted. The thing is, it’s always the family who’s taken the kid off unit. Anyway, the stairs from that unit are badge entry, as are floors which directly access the OR and same day surgery - don’t want extra germs in those environments.

Weird all stairwells in that hospital are that way. I exclusively take the stairs in our 10-floor 💪 hospital, and typically run into other healthcare providers along the way. Physical therapists are probably the most common stairwell utilizers, though ICU/rapid response/trauma teams also avoid the elevators.

Overall, it’s pretty embarrassing people whose job involves promoting health don’t practice what they preach. Heck, even the director of the bariatric program is ~40 pounds overweight.

Many multi story buildings do not have stairs that are general use. The 2 office buildings I worked at in the city had stairs for emergency uses only.

Heck, even the director of the bariatric program is ~40 pounds overweight.
there was a nicu on his floor! the 6th :small flex: .

and when my daughter was a a day old and we were still in the hospital, we washed her off in the sink. that triggered the alarm. nurses came in like a swat team. good times.

This actually sucks too because then there is a bottleneck leaving the lot and the folks that waited in the queue now have to pay attention to the cars leaving the queue ahead of the order.

Any way to avoid the queue altogether, and drop-off/pick-up a couple blocks away?
I could, yeah. But it gives me a few quiet minutes with my boy which is nice. It's just looking a few hundred feet up and seeing a perfectly good "spot" for someone to utilize.

I’m always down for the stairs if they are available. Also don’t mind parking further away in parking lots for a little extra walk time. Unfortunately some places have no stairs though.
Yeah, they aren’t always readily accessible, but nearly every multi-story building has stairs - finding them is part of the adventure!

Agree wrt parking. Don’t have the patience for people stalking the close aisles, or obnoxiously backing in when cars are waiting.
Many multi story buildings do not have stairs that are general use. The 2 office buildings I worked at in the city had stairs for emergency uses only.
Yeah, I understand for security reasons, but it’s fewer than you think. While I have set off a few alarms in my life, usually there is no consequence to exiting doors labeled “emergency exit only”. I suppose you could ask a buddy in security if they are legit, or just pay attention to the exits, as you may see them being used despite the warnings.

😀Maybe a 5 floor max for this. I do love it when they drop you in the dead end alley where the local hobo has set up shop!

just don't like waiting when motion and moving towards my target is an option.
this, when it comes to driving

makes my wife crazy. might take a few minutes longer to avoid lights/traffic but i'd rather be moving than sitting still at a light waiting.

Was just going to say this. There is an old adage too that says when stopped you should be able to see the car in front of you rear tires. A lot of old timers still abide by this rule. But leaving 20-30 feet is too much for sure.

This is what I do. I'm talking about people leaving 2 car lengths.

That's dumb

We moved to Arizona in June and I was thinking, wow this is great, there are almost no dogs on our block.

Turns out it was just too hot for people to put their dogs outside unattended for hours. Now that the weather has cooled we are lucky to hear a chorus of yapping and barking again. Yay. Who wants to have windows open anyway.

People that you constantly have to hound for the same thing over and over when they know good and well you want it, and it would take them 5 seconds to give it to you. This is a very specific peeve but it's the bane of my existence because it happens daily.

Backstory:
I work for a chemical company and we get this one chemical delivered via tanker truck to one specific tank 5 days a week Mon thru Fri. 95% of the time it's the same driver that brings it. I've asked him no less than TWENTY times to please shoot me a text or call by 7 AM and give me a heads up what time he's arriving that day. I don't care what hour of the day it comes, I just need to know what time to expect him because I need to make arrangements to have someone process him in. Every. Single. Day. I have to text this dude and ask what time he's coming. And about half the time I get no response, until suddenly hours later I get one that says "I'm here". If I'm tied up, I'm not stopping what I'm doing to go deal with him, so he has to sit and wait sometimes for up to an hour until I can get someone freed up to go handle him. He doesn't care, he is completely unfazed. He's a good worker, meticulous and clean and safe and does a great job but just a horrible communicator. It would take him 5 seconds to just open a text and type "9:30" and hit send. And it's not like he doesn't know what time it's coming, because it's a freaking three hour drive from him to me. Everytime I ask him "just shoot me a text before you start driving and I'll +3 hours to it" and he goes "ok no problem" but then he never. freaking. does. it. I swear he gets some enjoyment out of this or something. /rant
