Can we discuss pet peeves here? (1 Viewer)

People who are late...constantly. "Traffic was awful, etc"....Leave early to offset any delays.
Saw a great meme once that said, "I'm sorry I was late. Traffic was as bad as it usually is and I wasn't expecting that."

There's also a term for people like that (and for the record, I'm one of them): Time optimists
This is my wife. She refers to it as “time blindness.”

She has zero idea of how long any task will take, even if she has done it before.

Pretty sure there was a thread about this here years ago, but I just happened to look up AC/DC setlist in Detroit last night and they closed the show with “for those about to rock”. Like we’ve been rocking for 2 hours and now we’re all done rocking bros…that should have been your opener
Agreed, it would be like Alice Cooper closing his set with "Hello Hurray".
Even Spinal Tap knew to OPEN with “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight.”

It's been said in here before... but if you're walking down a sidewalk, especially in a busy place like a city - stay to the right.

Tourists here in NYC don't seem to understand this and will walk down the middle of the sidewalk, usually in a pair or more, forcing anybody walking towards them to dive out of the way or run into them.

It's a city of 8 million people with more visiting, and yet it works out.. until people do simple things like that that gum up da woiks for everybody else
Do you alter sidewalk behavior when visiting countries where people drive on the left?

and this holds true for a hallway anywhere.

just in general... be aware and respectful of your surroundings and the people in them.

So I have a hypothesis on this.....

I wonder if most of the people who do this (and drive in the left lane) are from countries where they drive on the opposite side of the road?

Do people in other countries where they drive on thew opposite side of the road also walk on that side?
Yes!

Movies or tv shows where a character gets a text and then looks at their phone and they just show the text and I’m supposed to be able to read it

Like maybe I need a bigger tv or glasses but how about some subtitles for that
I always have closed captioning on no matter what we are watching now. Not for this particular reason, but it does help in instances like this

my brother is always late. his reason is a form of ADHD with myopic focus... he becomes so focused he can't break away from what he's doing, so loses track of time. he even sets alarms for all the time... still doesn't work.

my wife and I know that if we're making plans, we either tell him an earlier time (still usually late) or just proceed with whatever it is we made plans for without him (ordering dinner, going into the show, whatever).

I’m like your brother in that aspect. I’m the dude power washing the driveway an hour before guests arrive.

I am good with arriving early to important things (funerals, weddings, work,) but I’m often an hour late to the party…..at my own house!

lol.

I like to be a little early to everything. but I don't obsess about it- I'll do what I'm doing until it feels like the right time to leave and get there a little early. my wife, otoh, obsesses. hates that I'm still doing whatever and don't have my shoes and coat on an hour early she starts getting antsy. she starts packing for a trip a full week ahead of time, whereas I will almost always wait until the night before. I like being on time, but she lives to plan... and be early.

Before I got married I was always on time or early. Since getting married I think I have been on time a couple of times ........ In 45 years.

same

mine just calls it "adhd" but it's the same impact. she will bury herself in something like a Lego build for 13 hours without moving, taking a drink, going to the bathroom, etc. and just blow through deadlines without any realization whatsoever.

and every morning she is scrambling to get to work on time as if it's the first time she has ever woke up, showered, got ready and needed to be at work. every. single. day.

My wife thinks she had ADHD but has never been diagnosed. Which would make sense given her issues and that our son has been diagnosed with ADHD.

One of my brother's daughters was diagnosed with ADHD and some other things... but she's really obviously ADHD- can't sit still, can't transition from one thing to another, difficult time focusing on projects. When they first went through getting her diagnosed, the Dr asked my brother about himself, nodded, and said- yep, you've got it too... just a different form without the hyperactivity part.

Yep. My son is diagnosed ADHD-inattentive. That's probably what my wife has as well.

He's also been diagnosed with autism. The more I have learned about it, the more I think I am somewhere on the spectrum, though not as "far down" as he is.

So we dealt him quite the genetic hand.

My wife is not very observant. If I bring in a package that was on the front porch and put it inside the front door. She will never notice it. Right next to all the shoes. 16x16x20 box. Just sitting there. Her name on it.

"I was supposed to get a delivery today. i didnt see it on the porch."

You walked right by it. Just now. And 6 other times. It came yesterday.

"Why didnt you tell me?"

Mine knows how many stops until it gets to the house….

I can tell you in London, the stairs and such in the Tube, there is much more disarray than there should be, because people are confused about which side to stay on. It's not complete chaos, but in the NYC subway, everyone knows stay to the right.

But no, stupid people on the sidewalk are from every country-- and state.

Dumb pronunciations of names that we have to just accept because they say so. Ricky Castillo pronounces his name castilio. Just because his grandma wanted to and told everybody to use it that way, but didnt change the actual name.

Ralph Fiennes, why not Ray Fines?
That is an actual longstanding pronunciation. Like the k in swedish actually being an sh sound. Those arent made up by the family.

Still stupid. And it's pronouced Rafe, not Ray.

I carried the F to the last name.:bag:

The entire lexicon or whatever of Gaelic/Celtic names where a name is spelled somewhat normally but pronounced Allishorksnedbraugenloo.

Wait, so Ralph is pronounced Rafe in his name? I don't guess I've ever heard his name said aloud, I just see the credits and recognize that Ralf Fines is that actor guy.

The More You Know, indeed...

Dealing with the rigmarole of getting vehicles fixed due to the fault of other poor drivers.

I’ve actually lost track of how many times I’ve been rear ended. :oldunsure:

Took my daughter’s brand new car out for a spin and fill her tank up. I was sitting in front of an elementary school waiting for the car in front of me to turn. I was still for over a minute and BAM!!! I don’t adjust her rearview mirror so I never saw it coming. (there’s no shoulder so even if I saw him, I wouldn’t have been able to get out of the way without going into oncoming traffic.)

Where does waking up this morning to find someone damaged my car’s bumper in a hit and run, without leaving a note or anything, rank here? I’m maybe more than a little peeved.
Did you back into the spot? That will be really important to this outcome
No. I was parked facing forward.
I think one of those back-in propaganda nutjobs is trying to make a statement. I mean safety is supposed to be the reason to back in and this event is trying to highlight that. We should all be on the lookout because if it could happen to you it could happen to anybody.

I don’t adjust her rearview mirror
Do you also not adjust her seat or temp controls or change the radio station? What the hell
Speaking of this... one of my current kid-related peeves is them changing the station in MY car when I'm shuttling them around. I don't want to fuss at them too much (I already feel like I do too much) but after them flipping from station to station, I end up saying "YO IT'S MY CAR!" and put it on country.

I realize dealing with the public is a dicey proposition at best, but I still scratch my head over the following. Like many other places, we have a website with a contact form that serves as a lead generator where potential customers put in their specific details and attach their project specifications. Sometimes, people send over long messages with multiple attachments asking for a phone call to get started. I usually respond and reach out to people in anywhere from 15-30 minutes both by phone and electronically. So far, so good.

But many times, the people that just took all that time to type up their details and requirements don't answer the phone or ever respond to emails or DMs. I'll try again the next day and usually once more a few days later . . . and often get completely ignored. To which I ask, what was the point? Why did they waste their time going through all that and then go dark? Apparently, a response of "found someplace else," "thanks for the info," or "exploring multiple places" is too much to ask for. I don't get it . . .

Wish I dealt with people like you more often, fine sir. I fill out forms and **** and get ghosted far too often. WTF people - I am reaching out because I want to give you my money

Sounds like you guys are on the opposite ends of the connection pool. Anarchy looking for Moops and vice versa but all they get are the non responsive people on both sides. Maybe a DM is needed between you too (but then neither of you respond to the other)...

If that doesn't pan out, you could always PM shuke. (that's what I'm supposed to say, right?)
