Can we discuss pet peeves here? (4 Viewers)

Man I'm full of peeves today. Why do apps log you out? Went to check in for my flight to Denver tomorrow on the Southwest app and it had logged me out. Of course I don't know my frequent flyer number by heart so I have to go to my work email, go to the folder where I've stored the email from SWA with the number, copy it and then paste it into the SW app and plug my password in and of course by the time that all happens I'm stuck with B-39. Not a business trip so I don't wanna pay the extra fee to upgrade to the front of the line. I'll just sit in the back of the plane like a commoner.
Try buying a beer on a United flight. They've gone "contactless payment", which sounds kind of neat. You must first download their app BEFORE your flight, log into the inflight wifi - if it's working, sign up/in using a 47 digit password with letters, numbers, and assorted hieroglyphics, upload a credit card to your "wallet" on the app (this had to be done before your flight), then share a code with the flight attendant verifying that you uploaded your credit card and that payment is being processed. Thanks, but I'll just have a Diet Coke.

Was in MD for a week. Don't get me started on DE drivers... The absolute worst.

Instead, something I noticed in the OC MD area... Drivers hitting the brakes to an almost stop- and then as they're already turning, put on the turn blinker as an after thought.
Lemme rephrase...

Drivers who don't use their turn signal until after they're already turning. Forcing cars behind to slow to a stop for no apparent reason.

Also saw during a monsoon down there cars driving with their hazards on- because it was raining. IME, those are because you're either stopped somewhere you shouldn't be and want to alert other drivers... Or because you're having technical issues with the car and as a result have to drive at a slower than normal speed until you can pull over somewhere safe. Rain doesn't qualify, and is dangerous to flash them.
For Hazards in rain it depends on how hard it's raining and the road way. I've been flying down 95 only to get caught in a heavy storm with low visibility. I have no issues with that

Usually because you have to slow way down
That's what regular lights and brake lights are for. Hazards- per my drivers class and CA drivers test (which I somehow remember, but can't remember what my wife said to me 1 hour ago)- are not used in the rain because they are supposed to mean something else and create dangerous situation when not used as meant.
First driving in NJ with Hazards on is technically legal.

But how is it more dangerous to drive with hazards on when you have very limited visibility and are traveling well below posted highway speeds. I mean I don't normally do it.

But if people up ahead of me start flashing hazards before I get to the rain I might slow down a little before hand. But travelling 25 mph on a limited visible road that is normally 65 mph I consider your quote of " as a result have to drive at a slower than normal speed until " to be applicable
I'm with belljr on this one. If you're driving in poor visibility situations like heavy rain or snow then hazards on is a way to let people behind you know you're there and likely driving in a cautious(re: slow) manner. I've done it many times and I appreciate other drivers who do it as well. If I don't find the driving conditions to be as bad as the driver in front of me I'll switch lanes and drive how I'm comfortable.
Started a thread with poll in the wrong forum :P

I fly United quite a bit and have noticed they went "contactless". I very rarely buy anything inflight, though. That said, if I wanted to.... I already have the app downloaded (for checking in, boarding pass, etc.), and since I had just used the app to board, I would assume I'd still be logged in. And I think I already have a card on file.

But if you're an infrequent flyer I can see how this would be a major pain.
This sort of thing wouldn't affect me personally because I never buy anything on flights, but it's a nice example of how airlines are making air travel as unpleasant as possible. If I was the sort of person who just wanted to buy a beer or snack box or something, I would pissed that they made me jump through a bunch of hoops instead of just accepting my credit card like every other merchant.

Yeah, agreed. I use my 4 ways in these situations and I appreciate when others do. It doesn’t make sense not to. That’s what they’re for

No, it isn't. Presumably, everyone is experiencing the rain. (Unless you have your own personal cloud.) Hazard lights are to indicate a problem specific to your car. That's why they are called emergency flashers or hazard lights. (I had to look up what a four way is. Sounds like a stop sign.)

Florida recently changed their law to allow for the use on hazards in certain situations including rain, smoke, fog.

Probably because it was easier than ticketing everyone or making them take remedial driver's ed.

This sounds like it's a where you grew up thing. Tbh, I didn't even know it was legal anywhere.

It was about safely alerting other cars that you're either stopped somewhere unsafe or going way below the speed of traffic due to car issues (or funeral procession).

It's the speed of traffic part that makes driving with them unsafe... To me. I see those and I know there's a problem that. I need to avoid and go around safely. If it's raining or otherwise weathering so badly that it makes my vision compromised- I slow down or pull over and make sure my lights are on. If I see somebody else's hazards, im assuming they've stopped or are going far enough below speed of traffic that I need to safely go around them.

if there is something causing a dramatic change in the general rate of speed, i am putting on my hazards to give people behind me notice.
Aka brake lights?
no hazards.

i have been in many situations which traffic slows down quickly with many faster moving cars behind me (sometimes decent gaps). brake lights alone do not always get people's attention.

also, think about corte madera in the heavy rains (where a large puddle is created from the slope of the highway)

This is acceptable …

Cmon peole, let’s all have some common sense and nuance here…

Hard rain out of nowhere to the point you can’t see? Sure, maybe work your way over to the side of the road and stay there. Don’t drive in the far left lane, less than half the speed limit.

Abrupt stop, or a stop over the crest of a steep hill, sure, put em on to make somebody behind you aware of an upcoming hazard.

Oh, and a lot of you driving with your parking lights on forget to turn them off after the storm.

I think we are splitting hairs. Thats what we do!!! Plus its your pet peeve you're allowed to have it.

If its raining that hard that you are slowing down and they are alerting everyone they are travelling slower than the posted speed limit isn't it the same as if its not raining and they are traveling below the posted speed limit?

Yeah if I'm 1-2 miles away from hitting the storm and see people turn their hazards on ill slow down. Brake lights I figure they just slowed down for a second. You can't always tell the rate of people slowing down with just brake lights. Is everyone slamming on their brakes or just tapping them? many variables

I tap the brakes and then brake.

Hazards are for if you alone are travelling unsafely below the speed of traffic or forced to be stopped somewhere unsafe. That's what hazards tell me, so when I see them I'm thinking of how to safely get around them.

Speed of traffic, not speed limit. If we're all slowed to be safely driving below the speed limit... That's the new speed of traffic.

It's about telling the world you alone are stopped or traveling unsafely below the speed of traffic.

If it’s raining so hard that I can barely see (once in a blue moon) I’m putting my 4 ways (or whatever you want me to call them) on so I have a chance of not getting run over by the idiot behind me who is driving too fast for conditions…probably in an 18 wheeler

Right but some people are more comfortable at 45 mph where others are 25 mph. Should the 25 mph people have hazards on or not?

I disagree... it is about alerting others behind you that there is a dramatic change in conditions occurring, whether it is just me or everyone else.

we were driving on the autobahn from Innsbruck to Munich at a high speed. maybe 30 miles from munich, traffic came to a halt very quickly. brake lights would not have been a sufficient alert

this was before google maps and waze

In my universe, the way I learned how to drive... Hazards in front of me mean I need to navigate around the car with hazards on as safely as possible- because they're travelling unsafely below the speed of traffic or stopped. That what I learned in drivers ed and in the driving test. So if I see them, they're not telling me kumbaya or everybody else should slow down to the same speed- that's why they're not safe to be used for driving at the speed of traffic.

strange as you and i grew up in the same area and i took my driver's training in marin. for me it was an alert to slow down due to hazardous conditions.

@El Floppo

In California, you should use your hazard lights, also known as flashers or emergency lights, when your vehicle creates a temporary hazard for other drivers:
  • Emergencies
If you need to pull over on the shoulder of the road due to an emergency, such as a broken down vehicle or car accident
  • Warning other drivers
To alert other drivers of hazards on the road, such as a pothole, collision, flooding, or illegal parking
  • Getting pulled over
To signal to a police officer that you acknowledge their signal and are following their request
  • Changing a tire
When your vehicle is on the side of the road and could be a hazard to other drivers
    Driving in bad weather
To make yourself more visible in heavy rain or dense fog.

    to add some confusion from the same article;
  • You should not use your hazard lights if there is no emergency situation that requires it, such as when traffic is heavy or you're simply driving in foggy conditions. Unnecessary use of hazard lights can be illegal, decrease their effectiveness, and confuse the public

It's always been a problem but has gotten worse as far as restaurants not living up to what's advertised. Individual franchises now seem free to offer up what they want to sell vs what you see on the TV. The days of Ray Kroc visiting individual McDonald's to qualify check are long gone.

I tell ya, I'm thinkin Taco Bell does the best in terms of value. I just had some sort of beefy burrito that was ginormous, a chipotle chicken flatbread melt and some thing they call a "stacker" but I subbed steak for ground beef. Got out of there just under $10 and man I am absolutely stuffed.

Was it one of their Cravings Boxes? Those are really good deals but typically buying a la carte jacks up the prices quite a bit.

Nah actually it was a la carte. It was $2.99 for the Cheesy Double Beef Burrito (this thing is huge), the Stacker (sub steak) was $3.49 and the 3 Cheese Chicken Flatbread was $2.69. Super reasonable.

I see they have a "build your own Craving Box" for $8.99, which includes a drink (which usually is super overpriced a la carte). Gonna try that next time.

It's always been a problem but has gotten worse as far as restaurants not living up to what's advertised. Individual franchises now seem free to offer up what they want to sell vs what you see on the TV. The days of Ray Kroc visiting individual McDonald's to qualify check are long gone.
Yep and even if they do it they don't advertise it.

For example took kid to McD not too long ago. Was like I'll get one of the $5 meals. No where is it shown or listed.

I ask hey you guys have the $5 meal they look at me like I'm dumb for asking. "Of course Burger or chicken"

I put my hazard lights on when I enter tunnels too because it is dark in there and I need people to see me better. I also put my hazard lights on when I am in the drive thru. Got rear ended once at mcdonalds. Fool me once ronald! I also put hazards when I am in the school pick up line. Mostly just so I can make sure all the parents know I am a safe driver.

Lastly, I leave them on in the garage so my wife doesnt hit my car anymore.

Our HOA prohibits parking on the street at night. It is broken all the time. Not a big deal if a car is parked on the street overnight. Literally zero effect on your neighbors.

However if you park two cars on the street every night please dont park them on opposite sides of the street across from each other.

Jesus christ, we live in a society here. It is uncanny how often I see the same biker at exactly this point in the AM. And of course they park the tesla on the wrong side of the road so it just adds to it when the tesla lights come on because it thinks i am going to hit it head on.
We live in a neighborhood that has a couple homes routinely rented to bougie college upperclassmen at SMU. Every year around now when the lease turns over, they park on the wrong side of the street.

Every year, me, my wife, our next door neighbors, the neighbors two doors down, and others on the street immediately report the cars with photos and license plates to Dallas parking authority, and for a couple weeks they just get hammered with tickets until the lesson is learned.

I take a somewhat perverse joy in it and have a tinge of excitement knowing whats coming soon...

I'm assuming this was meant as satire, and it did make me laugh. Thank you lol.

Jesus. I couldn’t eat that in one sitting. Maybe in two. When are we getting beers? :lmao:

I didn't think the burrito would be as big as it was, especially for just 3 bucks. It was a haul.

Beers sometime in laterish August? I will set something up and post up in the thread I started.

Sounds good. I’m working nearly every day through August. I have a couple of random Tuesdays off

Ouch, Tuesdays are tough but that being said I work at my office on Tuesdays so I might just be able to go over to those breweries after 4 or 5pm if that works for you!

What if you park two full-sized trucks and a 15-20 foot boat on a trailer, on opposite side of the street, blocking two neighbors’ mailboxes?

I read that as Pennsylvania Barbecue, and had no clue why that would be a name of any restaurant, let alone in Florida.
The PA stands for "Park Avenue" and I can't think of a more off BBQ name than linking it to like NYC which is what i think of with Park Avenue
Is NYC BBQ a thing?
There are BBQ places in NYC, but they’re not going to be mistaken for Kansas City.

A NYC-based FF league I belonged to long ago would have its offseason meetings at a place called Blue Smoke.

Great name for a BBQ joint.

Worked at one called Red Hot and Blue and it was fun. Good Blues music all day long, good food, fun folks working there.
The chain, or a one off somewhere?

We used to have one very close to use that we liked a lot, but it closed down years ago. Miss that place.

Small cul de sac streets or the like, that have like 10 houses on them, yet the addresses are all like 23,457 Elm Ave. Why the 5 digit number? I grew up at 7 Whipple Ave. Now that's a proper number address

Ours has a four digit number. The first two numbers are the block number on the map grid.

My parents' house had a five digit number. Same deal with the first three digits.

Let me see. According to facebook ladies, "you never know what somebody is going through. Please show compassion. They could have had a medical emergency and be rushed to the hospital and now here you are complaining about parking"
