I've watched full test matches over several days before (many years ago) but just read the article in ESPN about the upset and understood bupkis.
I started reading that article and thought to myself: this must be how my wife feels when I start trying to explain all the football rules…
I will explain it in baseball terms.
Each pitch is called a delivery. There are 6 pitches/deliveries in an over.
Each side has 20 overs (120 pitches/deliveries) to score as many runs as possible without getting 10 players out.
11 players a side.
No player on the fielding/bowling/pitching side is permitted to bowl more than 4 overs (24 pitchers)
Therefor A minimum of 5 players MUST bowl/pitch
The fielding/bowling/pitching can get the hitters/batsmen out in numerous ways.
Caught. Just like baseball. In cricket only the keeper/catcher can wear gloves. A cricket ball is much harder than a baseball
Bowled. The ball hitting the 3 sticks behind the batsmen. Basically like a strike. Except if there were 3 sticks behind the batter
Leg Before Wicket (
LBW) - If the ball would have hit the stumps except the batsmen's legs were in the way. Lots of rules here
Run out - In attempting to tun a batsmen fails to be safe. Similar to how baseball works, but instead of a baseman catching the ball, the fielder has to break the stumps with the ball.m
Stumped - When attempting to hit the ball the batsmen leaves his safe zone and the keeper/catcher breaks the stumps
Several other ways which are too crazy to explain
Scoring
A Home Run ie The batsman hitting the ball over the fence/ropes or the wall is called a
6
If the batter reaches the fence/ropes without clearing it it is worth
4 runs. They do not need to run. Once the ball hits the fence, the ball is complete.
If the batter doesnt reach the fence they run between the stumps. 1 completed by both batsmen is worth
1 run
The number run is technically unlimited, but 1, 2 or 3 are the most common runned amounts. 4 or 5 is rare. More is a freak occurrence requiring further explanation
The difference between T20 and One day cricket is the amount of pitches/deliveries. In one day cricket each side had 50 overs (300 deliveries). Test cricket is unlimited deliveries and each side can be dismissed twicelm
