Cricket World Cup (1 Viewer)

I've watched full test matches over several days before (many years ago) but just read the article in ESPN about the upset and understood bupkis.

I started reading that article and thought to myself: this must be how my wife feels when I start trying to explain all the football rules…
I will explain it in baseball terms.
Each pitch is called a delivery. There are 6 pitches/deliveries in an over.
Each side has 20 overs (120 pitches/deliveries) to score as many runs as possible without getting 10 players out.
11 players a side.
No player on the fielding/bowling/pitching side is permitted to bowl more than 4 overs (24 pitchers)
Therefor A minimum of 5 players MUST bowl/pitch

The fielding/bowling/pitching can get the hitters/batsmen out in numerous ways.
Caught. Just like baseball. In cricket only the keeper/catcher can wear gloves. A cricket ball is much harder than a baseball
Bowled. The ball hitting the 3 sticks behind the batsmen. Basically like a strike. Except if there were 3 sticks behind the batter
Leg Before Wicket (LBW) - If the ball would have hit the stumps except the batsmen's legs were in the way. Lots of rules here
Run out - In attempting to tun a batsmen fails to be safe. Similar to how baseball works, but instead of a baseman catching the ball, the fielder has to break the stumps with the ball.m
Stumped - When attempting to hit the ball the batsmen leaves his safe zone and the keeper/catcher breaks the stumps
Several other ways which are too crazy to explain

Scoring

A Home Run ie The batsman hitting the ball over the fence/ropes or the wall is called a 6
If the batter reaches the fence/ropes without clearing it it is worth 4 runs. They do not need to run. Once the ball hits the fence, the ball is complete.
If the batter doesnt reach the fence they run between the stumps. 1 completed by both batsmen is worth 1 run
The number run is technically unlimited, but 1, 2 or 3 are the most common runned amounts. 4 or 5 is rare. More is a freak occurrence requiring further explanation

The difference between T20 and One day cricket is the amount of pitches/deliveries. In one day cricket each side had 50 overs (300 deliveries). Test cricket is unlimited deliveries and each side can be dismissed twicelm

Questions?
JML, I am going to be completely honest and tell you that I still don't understand most of it but I thank you for the primer. No I just have to watch and noodle it through with your notes as a guide. Thanks!

cricket looks cool and i wish i knew more about it when it is on i watch it because it looks neat there are some guys that look to be in indian or pakistani that play in a park near where i walk and will take a rest and sit on a bench and watch them and they are always cool and ask me if i want to try but i tell them no thanks i just like watching them do what they do so my impression of cricket is that it looks cool and the people i have seen in person playing it are in fact cool take that to the bank brochachos

Have some good Indian friends... Cricket is MASSIVE there. A ton of money being poured into and out of the sport without equal ir competition of other sports there. And of course giant rivalry with Pakistan where it's similar. So our boys beating either of these two super powers in any version of the sport is all-timey amazing.

The best way is to persist with baseball comparisons. Cause they are similar.
One side has a ball, the other side has a bat.
The side with the ball has to get the side with the bat out.
Baseball has 3 outs per innings and nine innings. Cricket has 10 outs and one innings

Best way is to a step by step comparison of areas of confusion. Where do you want to start?

I myself prefer Test cricket as it is a true test of skill, endurance and is a great background sport to watch while doing something else. If there is an exciting moment of play, you tune 100% in. Otherwise its background filter. Seven hours a day for up to 5 days is an endurance test.

One day cricket was introduced in the 60s/70s cause the longer form needed to be jazzed up. Like Tennis at wimbledon with the strict white dress code, the one day form allowed colored clothing. Limiting the game to one day of 50 overs each was very attractive to the casual sports fans. I have done cricket world cup threads in the past here when Herschelle Gibbs smashed six sixes in an over and when the Pakistani coach….notice a theme lol, was found dead in his hotel room.

T20 was introduced maybe 20 years ago to massive success.
In India the IPL, the indian premier league, is a massive money spinner.
Players Earn absolute fortunes over the space of a few weeks.
It is easily the most digestible format as something is always happening and no time for batters to take their time to get their eye in.
Score quickly or get out. A bowler who can contain batters is worth an absolute fortune.

What I'm just remembering that threw me off watching...
The wickets are in the relative middle of the oval- and you can hit backwards.
You don't have to run out your at bat after you've hit it. Iirc, it's like fouling off a oitch- you can sit there. jML- can they sit in their at bat indefinitely? I'm too tired to scroll up and read through whether you only get a certain amount of pitches as a batter.

In theory yes. If you hit the ball or miss it you dont have to do anything. All day. Over 5 days in test matches.
In the days of test cricket 50+ years ago there were specialist batters whose only job was to keep an end occupied and only score if absolutely necessary. This allowed the batter at the other end to play more freely and risk getting out.
These batters were called anchors or sheet anchors. They were horrible to watch bat.
These players died out with the shorter form of the games becoming more prominent.

You can run when the ball is hit anywhere. You can run when the ball isnt hit.
If the ball hits the body (mainly the legs) you can still run. This isnt credited to the batsmen. It is credited as Leg Byes as part of the Extras scorecard.

The more you try and digest this game the more complicated it gets. Best to keep as simple as possible until it clicks lol

For excitements sake here are two examples of six sixes in an over.
Herschelle Gibbs 2007
For context that was against a weak Dutch bowler
Much more impressive was Yuvraj Singh against one of the best bowlers of all time Stuart Broad
Yuvraj Singh 2007

The only player to do it since in an international game is Keiron Pollard for the West Indies against Sri Lanka in 2021
Keiron Pollard

It has been done at lower levels of the game. Most nobably by the 2nd greatest player of all time Sir Garfield Sobers in english county cricket (level below test cricket)

India got it done against Pakistan managing to stave them off after only putting up 119. USA in excellent shape to make the Super 8. Pretty much a mortal lock to they beat Ireland (or dare I say beat India) and even have a chance if they lose their last 2 if they don't get thumped.

110 vs India and now bowling. Very creditable score though India shouldn't have a problem topping it.

Got my conspiracy hat on that perhaps India opted to bowl so as to not kill the USA's coefficient too badly (which would help the USA knock out Pakistan even if both of them end up 2-2). :tinfoilhat:

OMG is this happening? This might be happening.

I love your optimism.
India played it perfectly.
No matter what though if Pakistan win their last game and the US lose to Ireland, Pakistan will make it through on a better net run rate.
Unfortunately not head to head.
On the bright side, if weather affects either Pakistans final game or the US’s final game and there is no result, the US will make it through.
Easiest thing is for them to beat the Irish who are a much more accomplished side. Not Pakistan accomplished though lol

You can, yes, but in limited overs cricket (especially T20) it is normally the case that you run out of deliveries (pitches) to work with before you lose all your wickets, so you will find that the batsmen will run a lot more aggressively than they would do in first class (Test) cricket

USA clinching scenarios:
Win vs Ireland

Loss to Ireland
And Pakistan loss to Ireland and we have better coefficient
And Canada loss to India

Or
Loss to Ireland
And Pakistan loss to Ireland and we have better coefficient than Ireland
And Canada beats India and we still have better coefficient than Canada

Or

It Rains tomorrow

Summarizing where each group is at heading into the last round or so of games

Group D
South Africa are through to the next stage. 3 out of 3 with Nepal left
Bangladesh are favored to win the other spot. They just have to beat the underdog Nepali’’s

Nepal is the only other side with a chance to get through and they have to win both games over the top 2 sides. Not likely to win either game, let alone both

Netherlands have one game left, but cannot qualify for the next stage.
Sri Lanka would have been favorite at the start of the tournament over Bangladesh for the 2nd spot, but were up against it once their game against minnows Nepal was washed out and they lost a crucial point. Losing to the top 2 sides cemented their dismal campaign,

Group C
New Zealand and West Indies would have been favorite to qualify, with Afghanistan 3rd.
Uganda and Papua New Guinea are newcomes and little was expected

Afghanistan and West Indies are both already qualified. They are undefeated and play for top spot next
New Zealand had a schedule which made their job difficult. They played after all the other sides. Some sides had played 3 games while they only had 1 under their belt. Losing to Afghanistan was unexpected, but they were outplayed completely
Uganda beat Papua New Guinea to avoid bottom spot

Group B
Australia and England were expected to qualify easily from this group. Scotland favored to finish third.
Namibia and Oman were expected to be outmatched

The Scotland v England game was washed out leading to a situation where mortal enemies of England, Scotland and Australia can play mischief here. Next, England are expected to beat Namibia easily moving to second place.
Then in the final game, Australia are already qualified, so can “throw” the game against Scotland to make sure England dont qualify. Im not sure if finishing first in the group is important, but Scotland would finish first if they beat Australia.
If either game is washed out, Australia and Scotland qualify.

Group A
India and Pakistan were expected to qualify easily. Ireland were expected to finish third, while USA and Canada would fight for fourth

Well in one of the biggest, if not the biggest upsets in crickets history, The USA beat Pakistan.
Setting up an intriguing finish to the group.
India are already through and Canada will be their final victim. Locking up first and last
Ireland plays each of the other 2, USA and Pakistan making it a 3 way race for the final, spot.

If Ireland beat USA and Pakistan, which is possible, Ireland and USA would tie on points. Then its down to Net Run Rate to see who qualifies.
USA v Ireland is next. If the USA win, they are in. Lose and the winner of Ireland V Pakistan is likely to make it through.
If either of Irelands last two ganes are washed out, the USA qualifies automatically.

Looking ahead to the next phase, the Super Eights
The 8 teams will be split into two groups of 4.
Each group of 4 will play each other once.
After each side has played three games, the top two sides in each group play in the knock out semi final phase.

Super 8 groups are decided
Group 1
USA
England
West Indies
South Africa

Group 2
India
Australia
Afghanistan
Bangladesh

Each side plays everyone in their own group for seedings into the final 4 and knockout stage

Group 1 is the most open. England and South Africa have been far from convincing to date.
South Africa almost lost to Nepal and England would have got knocked out if their Scotland game wasn't washed out
Anyone can beat West Indies on their day. If the USA can win one of these 3 games it will be a huge result.

Group 2, Australia and India are heavily favored to win through

First up USA v South Africa

Super 8 groups are decided
Group 1
USA
England
West Indies
South Africa

Group 2
India
Australia
Afghanistan
Bangladesh
Super 8’s decided.
Group 1 was fairly standard. South Africa remain undefeated, England won 2, with those 2 going through to the semis.
West Indies are a little unlucky, but not good enough. USA did well to qualify but were outclassed in the 3 games.

Group 2 was much more interesting.
India won all 3 and like South Africa are undefeated.
In the second biggest shock of the tournament, Afghanistan beat Australia for the first time in any format.

Heading into the final game, Bangladesh V Afghanistan, all of the other 3 sides could have made the semis.
Afghanistan just had to win to make it.
Bangladesh had to win in 12.1 overs or less to qualify.
Australia needed Bangladesh to win but in 12.2 to 20 overs

For some reason Bangladesh gave up winning quickly to try and win slowly.
With rain closing in, at various stages in the final few overs both Bangladesh and Afghanistan were in front.
Then quick lost wickets saw Bangladesh lose and Afghanistan make the semis

Semi fixtures are
South Africa v Afghanistan
India v England

Both of the seni finals were one sided affairs
South Africa thrashed Afghanistan on a pitch unfavorable to good cricket. Afghanistan did great to make it this far.
After 7 previous semi final appearances in various formats, South Africa will make their first final

India thrashed defending champions England in the other semi.
With the T20 money spinner, the Indian Premier League, the Indians should have an advantage in this format.

Both India and South Africa are undefeated after 7 games and should make for a great final.
