DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (3 Viewers)

There is a fab group of lovable moptops who dominated the mother of all album drafts but are woefully underrepresented here.

One of my early concepts was to do a jukebox containing only covers of that mystery artist.
Less surprising when you consider they're eligible for only a couple of years.
We can draft up to 5 pre-1966 songs years if we don't like some years from 66 to 2015.
Fixed

I'll be in and out today, driving, meetings and masturbating to the LCD/Radiohead/Killers Wayhome headliners (apparently).
Where are you hearing this?? I'll be seeing LCD earlier in the summer but Radiohead might sway me to go to WayHome too.
Inforoo. A Toronto station said Arcade Fire/LCD/Killers but seems like it's Radiohead.
Wow, it is Arcade Fire.
Wait, what? Where is that? I didn't get any Pearl Jam at Fenway so now I can get more AF shows.

That could sway me too. I'll have to put the word out.

Yeah, I know. I don't know how many people are like me and just don't want to do that. Then there are others who have themes that the Beatles are kind of incompatible with. But I could be wrong. Maybe black lesbians love Dear Prudence, who knows?

Eight and a half hour drive from Cranston. Interesting. I better renew my passport just in case.I wonder if the Blue Jays are playing at home that week?

I've never really listened to the lyrics of that Train song. I like the melody. It was always "Tell Me, did you dah dah dah dah dah, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah, dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah dah Milky Way!"

Good song.

Sorry, indulge me a little bit here.

Everyone has their own coming-of-age celebrity crush. You know what I'm talking about. That celebrity who just made you swoon when you were a kid. As a suburban white kid born in the mid-to-late 80s, my sweet spot was in the mid-late 90s and early 00s. It was the late 90s, maybe 1998 or so, Hanson is swirling in the air and my friends have become enchanted by something called nu metal. Fred Durst has my classmates buying oddly-colored Yankees caps, and Godsmack has them yelling unintelligible lyrics. The girls have separated into NSYNC vs. BSB cliques. And for the boys, the discussion in the lunchroom centered around the two preeminent late 90s suburban white kid crushes - Britney vs. Christina. Non-stop. This was back when MTV and VH1 used to play videos.

But I wasn't really into the same music as my friends, in case you can't tell. And I wasn't really into those two either. Why? Because. I. #######. Loved. Aaliyah. She had a heavenly voice and a supremely seductive delivery, and she was drop-dead gorgeous. Though I had been a fan for some years prior, I was about to turn 13 when this video came out, and oh my ####### god. If you walked into my house after school and that video was on the TV, I'd be looking like this.

Unfortunately, that song isn't on Spotify, so sue me for spotlighting it. I would've loved to pick it, but I will never turn down an opportunity to post that video.

And speaking of R. Kelly being a weirdo, this is all a long-winded way to say that she only has 1 album on Spotify so I'll take:

9.17 - Aaliyah - "Back and Forth (feat R. Kelly)" (1994)

And let's keep the crowd dancing with another cheesy yet enduring classic. I saw him live in 2014 and it was one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen....he's one hell of a showman.

9.17 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)" (1983)

1967 - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"

1968 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "All Along the Watchtower"

1970 - Toots & The Maytals - "Pressure Drop"

1971 - Bill Withers - "Ain't No Sunshine"

1972 - Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"

1978 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September"

1983 - Lionel Richie - "All Night Long (All Night)"

1984 - Billy Ocean - "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)"

1987 - Eric B & Rakim - "I Ain't No Joke"

1989 - Bell Biv Devoe - "Poison"

1990 - A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?"

1992 - Mary J. Blige - "Real Love"

1994 - Aaliyah "Back and Forth (feat. R. Kelly)"

1995 - Mobb Deep - "Shook Ones (Pt. II)"

1996 - Fugees - "No Woman No Cry"

2000 - OutKast - "B.O.B."

Aaliyah is another artist who is pretty much absent from Spotify.

The Richie song is the first time I've been sniped since I got more or less down to a shortlist.

I had always remembered this song as awful until we decided to try to turn it into a Bradyfan parody. I was surprised to discover that I loved it in my old age.

I was worried about you sniping Ain't too Proud to Beg from me.

Yeah, there are songs like this (and the New Radicals song :P ) that some people dislike because of the prejudices from their youth and because they've been played to death. But quality endures. All Night Long is beautifully structured, produced and performed.

I come to almost everything late. I was a little metal head in junior high/high school so I hated pop. I was all retro soul and Sinatra and stuff in college, so I didn't really engage with the indie rock of the time (I did really get into Prince then). But most 80s pop was stuff I didn't really enjoy until my 30s. If you'd have told the 16 year old me how much Hall & Oates the 44 year old me listens to, he would have been appalled.

1985 - Voices Carry - 'Til Tuesday

The rumor growing up in Boston was that 'Til Tuesday, a Boston Band, had arranged with The Wang Center (Theatre in Boston), for Aimee Mann to just start singing the part towards the end of the show without anyone being aware; resulting in the wonderful looks from the others in the audience.

1982 - The Stray Cat Strut - The Stray Cats
