Genrepalooza 3: Playlists are done, phwew (2 Viewers)

Going the other way, I have been skipped because I need to find a pick. It's @Mrs. Rannous that is up, with @Dr. Octopus on deck.
Actually, I believe Ab is right. If Larry just picked at 8.07, then I have 8.08. - I think - anyways, Ima rollin'.

8.09 Mehliana - Taming the Dragon (Other; 2014)

OK, this is assuredly in the Other category, but its exact label may be fuzzy. Mehliana (Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana) are typically considered jazz, but this particular selection is an oddball. Spoken Word may actually be the best fit, but since it is in the Other category as well, there should be no issues.

Regarding the song, I have posted it at FBG before, and it is odd enough, that it did not get huge love. Understandable - and I expect the same here. However, it fits my theme perfectly - and it is MY list, mutha's - so's - deal. 😉

🐲

For those who do enjoy it - don't try to kill yous dragon - you know, the dragon's where you get all that voodoo #### from, that's where you get your power from. You don't want to snuff him out, you wanna tame him, you wanna actually make friends with him and harness his power so you can use it...

  I pick before they do.
Gotcha...I am on skip, don't know about @Man of Constant Sorrow
Just @everybody already.

I'm thinking this week will be the end of the draft order.  After tomorrow, we'll switch to one untimed pick per day.

Discussion questions:

  1. Should we have one weekend pick or one each on Saturday and Sunday?
  2. Since FFA after dark discussion tends to be more entertaining, should we start the daily draft window in the evening rather than the morning?

Mandatory Friday night gin picks*

*Though I may buy tickets to Vladmas and not be part of it this time.

8.09 Ibibio Sound Machine, Wanna Come Down (None of the Above; 2019)

Unsure about the category, since ISM is technically a British band, but their background is more international, and so is the sound. I can move it to my home category (Female) if necessary.

At any rate, that groove makes me happy.

The block player is one of the best I've ever heard!

The rest is groooovy good too!

1) I have Derby Weekend coming up soon here in Louisville - but, I should have time to keep postin' as long as I prep - so, I'm fine with either option.

2) Again, makes no difference to me - but I agree night time is goofier - good. As a night-owl, it also would fit me well - less chance of me sleeping through my pick. But, if we off the clock, it should not matter as much.

On the whole, I'm very flexible - 🤸‍♂️ - I will roll...

I'd rather pick one on Saturday and one on Sunday, as it keeps Sunday moving for me. Makes me think. But, as always, I'm amenable to any decision made. I like this draft. I hope the dice hold out and we get somewhere at least around twenty rounds.

I think we should continue the draft beyond the 12 categories once they're rolled out with 12 more specific (maybe nominated by us as in the past) categories. I joked about Post-Grunge and I know people have mocked the baroque pop or chillwave or new jack swing or whatever as categories but those force us into different boxes, where if I have the "rock" broad category, I'm taking indie rock ten times out of ten.

Of course that's easy to say now, who knows what level of draft fatigue we'll be at in ten rounds from now.

I was having troubles with this category.  Seems like the stuff that I wanted felt a little too much on the rock side, so if it doesn't fit them me know...

Round 8

Genre:  folk/acoustic/folktronic/genres I've never heard of...

Song:   Lord Huron - The Night We Met

Get to see them again this summer.
❤️

I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I've been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met
This song would be perfect for my theme.

It is new to me, thanks KP.

I would agree if the dice aren't kind. I think once you start a draft, it's nice to have about twenty or more rounds. As far as obscuranta and categories, I'm not ashamed to say that with all the synthesis of the teens -- and the mash-ups of genre labeling -- I've taken to Wikipedia to check out which bands are eligible for which category. Does it make me a less of a nerd? Yeah, maybe. But we all get older at some point.

Round 8

Genre - Acoustic

Justin Townes Earle - One More Night In Brooklyn

https://youtu.be/UD4q_ej6mLM

There’s a very brief electric guitar solo in the middle but otherwise the song is acoustic. As to newer music this is the sound I’m most drawn to, and I like a lot of what the younger Earle has put out.

Round 8 - Blue Rodeo - Disappear (folk)

The link is to a live version and that same version is on Spotify from their Live at Massey Hall album version which is what is best for the playlist IMO

  Craaaaazy. All I knew of Mehldau was the Art of the Trio stuff.

This draft comes with a major qualifier about my home, rap and hip hop. There will be no Kanye West nor Jay-Z. I've drafted one ad nauseum, the other is on Tidal for the most part. That said, I'm very happy with this pick, and the emcee is also the producer, a la Kanye, something I totally respect. This song hasn't left my consciousness in ten years. Black Milk is an indie rapper/producer from Detroit that never broke, Royce needs no introduction, and the rest is gravy. The sample of Blackrock's "Yeah Yeah" is totally dope.

(If) You can't take the heat/get your ### out the kitchen/matter fact/take your ### back in there and wash the dishes - Royce da 5'9"

Round 8.xx

Genre - Rap (Home)

Artist - Black Milk featuring Royce da 5'9" and Elzhi

Song - Deadly Medley

Insurrection of Nerds is my next band's name.

I want to pick rap/hip hop again but I'm going with country of the gospel variety, keeping with a long-standing tradition. Nice steel guitar in this, if I'm hearing it right. The pipes on this guy are incredible. The song is wonderfully done for a modern country song, IMHO. It was cut in 2003, according to the internet, and I remember seeing it and being impressed with it, as I hadn't expected much out of the country of the times back then.

Round - 9.02

Genre - Country

Artist - Josh Turner

Song - Long Black Train

Another that would fit my list perfectly.

Look to the heavens
You can look to the skies
You can find redemption
Staring back into your eyes
There is protection and there is
Peace the same burn in your ticket for that
Long Black Train

So, I hate country. Grew up where country was big. Heard plenty of it and can't stand it. I've picked 2 covers so far (a 3rd if you count the Heart Shaped Box classical score) and, while I could pick a few more, it looks like I have chosen them before or they are already pretty well known. Ergo - a home pick of something I can find no trace of on the board.

Round 9

Trampoline - SHAED - Female 2018

@Northern Voice

I went back and checked the Genrepalooza 2 sheet to make sure I wasn't double dipping on Country songs.  I'd forgotten it took 18 rolls until Outlaw Country first came up in round 37.

Round 8  -  For Good  (from Wicked 2003)  -  Kristin Chenoweth & Idina Menzel

None of the Above

Pikcing something from Hamilton put me in mind of this lovely song.

And it's okay if you skip me.  Except don't pick my guitarists.

Shouldn't we have two different categories? Kinda defeats the purpose.

Keep skipping me, I'll get up to date tonite.
Luckily people still have their home category if we run out of rock songs by then.

Good point, Doc.

But, regarding Rock, it's not so much that there aren't enuff of em - there prolly is - rather it's the obscurity - nobody knows any rock songs without deep reserch.

I'm diggin' now - but it is tuff. :(
