I had a real hard time narrowing this down

Rd 15 Party Griffin - Don’t Let Me Die in Florida

Country/folk isn’t my usual genre of choice but I really dig this. @Man of Constant Sorrow I am guessing you would like this too as it’s got a real Soggy Bottom vibe.
Yeah, that banjo kick's it. And ALL the F'N rest too!

Thnx - new to me.

The voice is perfect.

I saved the whole album. I will mix it in with some of KP's metal suggestions today.

Lyrics kick asss tooo - the bold'ed part is my fav:

Please don’t let me die in Florida,
I don’t care about my name.
If you catch me dying in Daytona
Throw my bed on to a train.

I was born in Indian summer,
In the Southern long ago.
Where those dirty streets cry out for rain
And this is what I know.

And the rain came and the holly stopped
Just in time for snow.
And the icey cold filled up my shoes
And this is what I know.

Please don’t let me die in Florida,
I don’t care about my name.
If you catch me dying in Orlando
Throw my bed on to a train.

Run away into water
Find the jams of what was over
Right through my cap
Just as fun as you could tell a thing
I went at home and gave my girl a ring.
I put the highways at a black time down
Turn the ferries into the towns
And those hills give away just like a wedding gown
I put the highways at a black time down.

I don’t need to see no mirror,
I am never gonna see my own face,
Just a reflection of somebody
Who’s gonna leave without a trace.

Oh, over the hills so gold and proud
Let the night come in and lay my shroud
I never been to killer from around here
Maybe that’s where I should end my days.

...don’t let me die in Florida,
I don’t care about my name.
If you catch me dying in Orlando
Throw my bed on to a train.

15.xx  Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You (Female)

Melody Prochet's vocals and the simple tune harken back to early 60s girl groups with Kevin Parker in the role of Phil Spector.  I went back and forth between this one and a deeper cut on the album but decided not to overthink things (for once).

I drafted  Titus Andronicus - A More Perfect Union   (Punk/Emo/Hardcore/Metal/Screamo/Cookie Monster/Grover; 2010) in the 12th round.

I'm two quarters and a heart down
And I don't want to forget how your voice sounds
These words are all I have so I write them
I need them just to get by

Mine were back on page 26 but I went ahead and updated the SS with them anyway.

It's really tough to do the hip-hop / hard rock crossover thing successfully. Remember the turn of the century, when 4,000 bands all thought their path to fame was being the next Limp Bizkit? Yeah, not a red-letter couple of years for the genre.

This single was one of the rare beacons of light in that ocean of ####. And even if it hadn't been, tweaking lyrics to the same song to tailor it to two different radio audiences was some Clue-the-movie-level inspiration.

Genre: Rap / Hip-Hop

15.09* - Cypress Hill - "(Rock)/(Rap) Superstar" (2000)

* - because apparently on the spreadsheet I'm in the 9-hole from this round on, for some strange reason

Round 16.xx

Genre - Rap/Hip Hop (Home)

Artist - Juelz Santana

Song - Mic Check

I love this joint. Maybe my favorite of the aughts.

Mic Check 1-2 what is this? Santana's back for business.

It's what the game was missing.

Whoops! I thought Rd. 15 was the Rap/Trap round but it was actually 14 along with Dance - for which I'd already made a pick.

So lemme walk that Cypress Hill back for now and I'll make a Rd. 15 selection from my available genres of Female, Female and, ummm, Female.  :P

Alright, this pick I just recently discovered in @shuke's 1000 song thread. As usual, he gots it ranked waaay too low, but I thank him for turn'n me on. Thnx shuke.

15.xx Deap Vally - Smile More - live on John Lennon Bus @ Hangout Fest 2015 (Female; 2016) - Spotify link (note: slightly different version than my official pick)

The YouTube vid, which is my official choice, is a live version, and it is introduced as, "Reflection". The song was later released in 2016 as, "Smile More". Same song; I just prefer the live cut. I don't think that should be an issue.

I fell in love at first listen. It's not just the music, but the lyrics. Even for a lyrics junkie like me, this really bowled me over. Thus, I am not going to spoil them. Sorry. They are just too good in relation to my theme. I'll return to the spoiler tags next pick.

Everybody's tryina tell me what to do
Everybody's tryina tell me what to do
Makes me wanna break some #### and sniff some glue
Everybody's tryina tell me what to do

Stranger in the bar tells me to smile more
I look at him and I ask, what for?
I am happily un-happy man
And no, I don't wanna shake your hand

I don't wanna be a reflection
I'm so bored with this rejection
I don't wanna be a reflection
I don't need your direction

And I am not ashamed of my mental state
And I am not ashamed of my body weight
And I am not ashamed of my rage
And I am not ashamed of my age

And I am not ashamed of my sex life
Although I wish it were better
I am not ashamed I am no one's wife
Although the idea does sound kind of nice

I don't wanna be a reflection
I'm so bored with this rejection
I don't wanna be a reflection
I don't need your direction

All this reflecting is bad for my complexion,
Come on now, let's take this to the next section!

People think they know what kind of girl I am
They take one look, they think they understand
And they're always surprised when they meet me
Apparently I'm terribly misleading

And yes, I am a feminist
But that isn't why I started doing this
And sometimes I am full of bitterness
But I am trying to work through this

(x2)
I don't wanna be a reflection
I'm so bored with this rejection
I don't wanna be a reflection
I don't need your direction

Revisiting my Rd. 15 pick ...

Not a huge fan of these guys - and honestly not sure how they manage to keep getting top billing on the singles when others do most of the vocal work - but Emily Warren makes this my favorite of the bunch. Crunched-down minor-key piano and an Alessia Cara-esque chorus ... good stuff.

Naturally it was Chain's worst-ever showing on the Billboard charts, because we seem to be living in the worst possible timeline.

Genre: Female

15.09 - Emily Warren / The Chainsmokers - "Side Effects" (2018)

Rolling for round 17 (Sat) and 18 (Sun)

Unrelated, but this TED talk popped up on my youtube and thought you all would enjoy it:

How sampling transformed music | Mark Ronson
Bumping this link all the way from page 12, because (a) everyone should watch it - it's eye-opening and (b) it's intimately connected with my next selection:

[Morpheus voice] What would you say if I told you that through the simple use of modern technology, we could take one of the quintessential party songs of the 21st century and make it ... better?

Mashups done well are amazingly satisfying, in many cases a whole that's better than the sum of its parts. I'm with @rockaction - I don't want to live in a world where the inevitable result of these exercises in inspired curiosity is getting booted off of YouTube due to DMCA takedown notices.

Genre: Dance / Re-Mixes

16.09 - Nelly vs. The Bee Gees - "Stayin' Hot" (2011)

Round 16:  Sia - Little Man (Exemen Works)

I don't listen to a ton of dance music but I really dug the UK Garage/Two-Step movement around the turn of the century.  The distinctive stuttering beat of two-step is infectious.  Like a lot of short-lived dance crazes, UK Garage died from a combination of overexposure via weak material and the unending need for the next big thing.  Two-step grew weirder and darker and eventually morphed into Dubstep and Grime.

My UK Garage draft options were limited by the 20th century boundary and spotty remix coverage on Spotify.   Exemen's Garage remix of a mid-tempo track off Sia's debut album is an excellent example of UK Garage.  It features both the two-step beat and the whump-whump bass that later defined Dubstep.

Sia hid her face and became a global Pop star.  Exemen has had more success as a DJ and producer using his other alias Wookie.

I agree with the sentiment and the great musical result.  Thanks.

In honor of the pregnancy song above, I'll pick this for

Round 16  -  #### Me, Ray Bradbury  -  Rachel Bloom  (2010)  None of the Above

This will probably be the only song in the draft to be nominated for a Hugo.  And you can dance to it.

And, trust me, IT'S NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

That video is done very well.

It's a shame that mashups are poorly represented but the digital rights are probably more bother than they're worth.  The pioneering work of artists like 2manydjs and Girl Talk are still a hoot to listen to.

Wore Girl Talk out back in the day.  In fact my college and high school age daughters will hear an old 70s/80s song and think it was from those mixes - They keep waiting for the JayZ or Beastie Boys part in an ELO song.

Danger Mouse's Grey Album is great too but it's hard to find a working stream.  The DJ has done alright for himself though.

I selected it in the wake draft and sang its praises in Tim's song draft to expected scorn. It could be the album of the aughts, all things considered.
