Genrepalooza 3: Playlists are done, phwew (8 Viewers)

This was the first thing I thought of but didn't want to be an...ahem...won't say it. I thought those rules were unwritten.

I kid. It's a chance, in my book, to make another selection for posterity's sake. I even incorporated that shtick to pass Go with a Chance card and get a few extra punk picks...

I agree. We want Jay on the rap playlist and Spotify has plenty of good choices

Round 18.xx

Genre - Old Fart

Artist - The Jesus And Mary Chain

Song - Black And Blues ft. Sky Ferreira

Huh. I spotlighted this band earlier in the thread on accident and then deleted the post in case anyone wanted them. Sure enough, it was me who did indeed want them, and this is the song I'd like to add to the mix. This is JAMC at their Psychocandy-esque most with fuzz and feedback-drenched guitars mixed with a nice hook and Velvet Underground-sounding refrain. Digging Sky Ferreira's guest appearance. This proved to be a surprisingly tough pick, as there's a band from the Northeast who consistently defies being anywhere near the things one would associate with the "Old Fart" category, and instead continued to rock and jangle-dance their way through the aughts with excellent material. I almost posted a 2009 track by them as my pick, but I'm feeling mellow this morning, and JAMC is doing it for me.

eta* I might have made a mistake not picking that band as my coffee kicks in. Love them. Viva la longevity!

It wasn't so much getting him on the list as it was just talking about a re-pick in general. I wasn't picking Kanye or Jay-Z even though they're two of my favorites. There's so much from the aughts and teens that, invariably, some great stuff and great rappers/hip hop artists will get left out. Personally, I'm trying to draft bands and songs I've never drafted before, which is actually getting a little more difficult given that I have participated in darn near every draft since 2015 or so.

I am going to make my round 17 pick now, and I will make round 16 a little later today.

17.xx Queens of the Stone Age - I Sat By The Ocean - (Rock; 2013) - Spotify link

The video is a live version from the Letterman show in 2013. The Spotify version is the original release. I really don't care which one is considered official, as I like them equally. However, if I must choose; I will make the live version my official choice. When all else is equal, I generally prefer live recordings.

Lyrics:

I sat by the ocean
And drank a potion, baby, to erase you
Face down in the Boulevard
Yet I couldn't face you

There ain’t no use in crying
It doesn't change anything, so baby, what good does it do?
Your friends, they all sympathize
Maybe, I don’t need them to

Imagined I'd be your one and only
Instead of the lonely one
You, me and a lie
Silence is closer, we’re passing ships in the night

There’s nowhere to run away, said
"Boy, if you want love, you’ll have to go and find it with someone new
Do you know who you really are?
Are you sure it’s really you?"

Lies are a funny thing
They slip through your fingertips
Because they never happened to you
Time wounds all the heals as we fade out of view

Imagined I'd be your one and only
Instead of the lonely one
You, me and a lie
Silence is closer, we’re passing ships in the night
You, me and a lie
Silence is closer, we’re passing ships in the night
End to the night, left with nowhere to hide

Closer and closer, we’re crashing ships in the night

16.xx Diplo & Blond:ish (feat. Kah-lo) - Give Dem - (Dance/Electronic; 2019) - Spotify link

This song was given to me by one of my best friend's daughter on Derby Eve night, but I could not remember details until my friend got me the info.

It's really new, and I don't know much about it - other than, I like it very much.

We danced to it that night. My feet are still very sore - but in a good way.

18.xx  The Church - Easy  (Old fart; 2006)

I've been listening to these guys for 35 years.  They've released almost as many albums post-2000 as pre-2000 and are still making good new music.  I saw them last year and they still sound great.  Pretty impressive career.

...since it’s a Thrones Sunday and this seems to be a Lannister ballad
Nice!

And, in a similar spirit, I send this out to Cersei:

18.xx Natalie Merchant - This House Is On Fire - (Old Fart; 2001) - Spotify link

Soon come, soon come the day this tinderbox
Is gonna blow in your face - your face - your face

This house is on fire!

Well kick off your boots, come sit a spell
Listen to me worry, come on listen well

All you better best come and lean in boys
I don't dare to raise my voice

I've been sitting here for the longest time
Reading all the warning and the danger signs

I don't have the gift of the prophecy
Telling everybody how it's gonna be

Soon come, soon come the day this tinderbox
Is gonna blow in your face - your face - your face

I don't have the gift of the prophecy
Telling everybody how it's gonna be
You go passing wrong for right and right for wrong
People only stand for that for just so long

It's all gonna catch like a house on fire
Spark an evil blaze and burn higher

Well, I don't have the gift of the prophecy
Telling everybody how it's gonna be
You go passing wrong for right and right for wrong
People only stand for that for just so long

I don't have the gift of the prophecy
Telling everybody how it's gonna be
There's a wild fire catching in the whip of the wind
That could start a conflagration
Like there has never been

That kicks asss, Eep.

Regarding the jello shot; that is a tradition I was taught from my oldest local Derby Party - began late 70's or so.

The hostess called the shot a Cosmo, even tho it wasn't. It did have vodka though.

It was the wife of Loopy (from my gin story) that made them. Loopy & Mrs. Loopy did not stick together much longer after we graduated from high school.

I think cosmos played a role in that.

Loopy then started coming to my Derby parties every year - beginning in '94.. He is about 75 now, and I do not even want to try and keep up with his passion for partying.

However, he also taught me to not take life too seriously, and I bless him for that.

😎
I have no idea what was in the jello shot I slurped down yesterday.  It was probably something julep related.  Some drunk woman had a bag of them and gave them out to random people at the party.  She later kissed my cheek and mumbled some Martian in my ear as she was leaving which pretty much mortified my daughter.

Nice!

Hey, it's Monkey Girl

I listened to the Rock list for a while today.  It's up to 36 songs now.  Very enjoyable and from the section I listened to, not as dominated by up tempo songs as you might expect.

I had the Country mix on while I added songs to the other lists last night.  Most everything was unfamiliar which is good but there were some songs I wouldn't mind never hearing again.

Nice!

Hey, it's Monkey Girl
I've never heard Cersei referred to that way before.

And, you obviously could not mean Natalie.

Thus, I shall now adopt Monkey Girl as my official Cersei pseudonym.

Thank you.

Oh wow, here we go.

Round 19.xx

Genre - Female

Artist - Metric

Song - Help I'm Alive

One of the joys of doing these drafts is picking a group that the Tasker/NV duo's friendship and subsequent discussion got you into. Here it is...I love this album and this song. Emily Haines from Broken Social Scene steps out and creates something even better than her more famous female bandmate. I tried to buy this album on vinyl, which is a personal benchmark of an album I consider to be high quality, but that endeavor was a no-go (actually, I just tried again. They re-released it on 180 gram vinyl! Excellent! Purchase made!). This might be an overground pick, but I'm not that familiar with their catalog. They've apparently won Juno awards for other albums. I just think this song is very worthy of a mix. Awesome upbeat synth-pop-rock/dance pop with wistful lyrics and just a killer riff. My kind of thing as I age.

I have Fantasies on vinyl as well, varies day to day but I think overall 'Blindness' is my favourite song on the album.

Je suis désolé
Lo siento
Ik ben droevig
Sono spiacente
Perdóname

Round 18 - Sorry - Madonna (Old Fart)

I have no idea why this song wasn't a bigger hit. Her best post-2000 single IMO.

It's weird to see Madge in the Old Fart category, and I can't help but think that what she was selling all those years was really age-bound. That's a sociopolitical discussion probably better suited for another thread or day, but it's also probably why she's not in the "pop" category anymore.

For the record, I never liked Madonna once prepubescent longings were through for me. Just a personal thing.

Round 18 - Sorry - Madonna (Old Fart)

Since Pop and Dance may not get rolled again, this song is a good example of how the Drop has impacted how popular song structure this century.   Not all songs have one but they seem a lot more prevalent than they used to be.

This Madonna song goes intro-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-buildup-drop-chorus-chorus.  The drop effectively replaces a bridge in the song structure.  It serves the same purpose but is almost entirely rhythmic rather than melodic.  In this song, the build up to the drop starts around the 2:45 mark and stretches out for almost a full minute.  That's cool (but still too long) on the dance floor but isn't ideal for a non-dancing listener.

I think its contributed to song bloat making the three minute single more of an exception than the rule.  That 1975 song I drafted in Pop has one of the shortest Drops I've heard.  Like the Madonna song, it starts around 2:45 but gets it over with in less than ten seconds.

This is my personal favorite Metric album, and "Twilight Galaxy", which I believe predates this album as an old live-only band staple, is easily my favorite Metric song ever.

OLD FART

18.xx - Pacific Coast Highway - Beach Boys (2012)

Sometimes I realize my days are getting on
Sometimes I realize it's time to move along
And I wanna go home

Sunlight's fading and there's not much left to say
My life, I'm better off alone
My life, I'm better on my own

Driving down Pacific Coast, out on Highway One
The setting sun
Goodbye
All of this resonates with me so much, as stuff like this has my whole life (at all ages).  Like Paul Anka writing My Way.

19.xx - Your Dystopic Creation Doesn't Fear You - Deerhoof Featuring Akwafina (2017)

This is kind of a weird song and I love it.  And I love the title, which is the title of a playlist I have for songs with a similar sort of eclectic bouncy electro rock style.  I think that Akwafina would be considered the primary singer, but I will re-pick if many grievances are filed.

I'm pretty solid with a title like that. Awesome.

Pretty appropriate for the female category, I think. Discovered this thanks to the Spotify algorithym. This band is Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, Bree McKenna of Tacocat, Stacy Peck of Pony Time.
