Genrepalooza 3: Playlists are done, phwew (6 Viewers)

This band needs to be represented in a 2000s draft IMO.

Round 17 - Phantom Limb - The Shins - Rock
This story has probably been told here before but in 2017 the lineup for Wayhome was just okay, compared to the previous years. There was still lots of good stuff - Justice, Banks, Phantogram for @Steve Tasker, Tegan and Sara for his buddy, Cage the Elephant, Royal Blood, Death from Above for me. PUP for everybody. Dragons.

For my friend, far and away his number one band of the weekend was The Shins. The way the Friday lineup broke down, there wasn't a lot of reason to go into the festival grounds particularly early. Looking back at the schedule, I think we went in for the first time for HAERTS at 3 PM but before that, being the first day of the festival, we did the craft beer exchange, we drank probably more than we should have and there were some pretty high test beers mixed in, and I think (know) maybe there was something being smoked as well.

It was all good for most of the afternoon. We've all mixed in a couple more drinks over the course of the evening on the festival grounds. Tasker has probably found more random weed. The beer selection was not good this year, I think I alternated between vodka/lemonade and cider most of the day in the baking hot sun.

HAERTS -> San Fermin -> The Naked and Famous -> Phantogram Takes us to about 7:30 with already an afternoon of great tunes, with everyone mostly sticking together, aside from a quick trip to see Dashboard Confessional or Constantines here or there (in hindsight this day is ####### stacked). But now we're heading different directions. I'm going to see Cage the Elephant, no one else really wants to see them, I'm heading to the front. Tasker is watching every last second of Phantogram and I think has moved towards the front at this point before going to watch Polica on one of the small stages and my buddy is going to see Foster the People before we meet back up for The Shins.

Or so we thought. I'm pretty sure the second he was apart from the pack, my friend beelined back to the tent for a "nap". Fast forward a couple hours. I loved CTE and am headed to the Shins set probably two songs or so in. Nevertheless, I'm in about row 5, it's not a big crowd, all the kids are going to see Flume. Tasker didn't particularly care about the Shins but waves or messages me and he's in the front row. I join him and send repeated messages to my buddy, no response, nothing at all. He misses the entire set of the only band he really couldn't miss. Still hasn't seen them, they haven't come back this way since.

Justice followed the Shins, I think we may have gone back to the campsite to find him before that but in any case, after his nap turned into a 3 hour sleep and sober up session, he's not particularly interested in two hours of lasers and beats.

From that day forward the combination of beer and weed has been known to us as a "Missing the Shins"

The Shins were awesome, probably top 3 band of the weekend.

Round 20.xx

Genre - Rap

Song - I'm Back

Artist - AZ

Just thought this was dope track back in the day. A killer sample of "Welcome Back Kotter" laid over one of the greatest first and second verses I can remember. The guest spot isn't as good, but the intro and the first verse slay.  This is sad. Genrepalooza 3 is winding down and songs still on the top of my head are unpicked. I may have to go Home Base from here on out unless some really appealing stuff gets rolled.

eta* BTW, I'm not drafting his Queens homie, either, as I've taken him and his post-2000 songs in many drafts.

Nice song -- I thought they were strictly a cover band based on YouTube clips I've seen - will check them out more.
Not at all.  They are a legit band.  I've seen them three times at the Ryman and anytime they come to Nashville I'll see them again.  That song is from their 2014 album "Bad Self Portraits" and there were 5 songs I could have easily picked.

Love, love, love them.

That fest was so poorly attended.  I showed up for an 8:45 Polica set at about 8:43, got a beer from the beer stand, and was literally the only person at the show, front/center on the rail, when they took the stage.  It filled in, somewhat, but not too much.  After it ended, I walked over to The Shins and got a beer, and we were still like in the 2nd row.  We were so close to every show.

The Shins were probably my surprise show of the entire weekend.  I did not expect much; they were very good even though I only knew a handful of songs.

A lot of different ways to go with this one but the Wayhome 2017 memories are drawing me to this band. Love the strings here and it was nice to know what the lyrics are because I sure didn't pick them up in the original Daft Punk/Julian Casablancas version. The original song is also my favourite on Random Access Memories

Round 20 - Instant Crush - Cage the Elephant - Cover

We've reached the end of Genrepalooza 3

Today - Round 20:  Covers and None of the Above

Wednesday - Round 21:  Rock and Country

Thursday - Round 22:  Drafter's choice
Says you.
Momentum waining in here for sure but if I keep posting post-2000 categories in here, will people keep drafting? i.e. even though Eephus says it ends Thursday🤬, if I post on Thursday night saying the Friday categories and Radiohead and glitch-pop, can we keep it going?

My idea would be no dice, :(  and one off, one time only categories that are much more narrower (sometimes specific artists or semi-obscure genres).

Basically just an excuse to keep the thread going and if people who skipped over the draft want to jump in for these one off rounds, the more the merrier.

Thoughts?

I'm game.  I'll keep drafting.

I like the idea of someone new random categories daily. I’m in

20.ee  Adele - Love Song  (covers)

With the dice portion of this draft coming to an end, it's fitting that the greatest British star of this century gets drafted.  But since I already picked One Direction in Genrepalooza 1, I'll go with Dame Adkins.

Adele's version of The Cure's song slows it down and makes it more torchy.  It's a lovely recording, she wrings a lot of emotion out of the lyrics without overdoing it.

20.xx Panopticon - Which Side Are You On? - (Cover; 2012) - Spotify link

This a local Louisville band/guy. Primarily considered black metal, much of the material is also bluegrass & folk oriented.

This is a cover of a song written in Harlan County Kentucky in 1931 -  I absolutely love it; and have for ages.

There is another cover version that I love equally, but I already have chosen that artist for another song.

This is not a political statement from me, rather a human statement - especially considering the history.

Lyrics

Come all of you poor workers

Good news to you I'll tell

Of how that good old union

Has come in here to dwell

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

We are starting our good battle

We know we're sure to win

Because we got the gun thugs

Looking pretty thin

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

They say in Harlan County

There are no neutrals there

You'll either be a union man

Or a thug for J.H. Blair

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Oh, workers can you stand it?

Oh, tell me how you can

Will you be a lousy scab

Or will you be a man?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Oh death, oh death

Please spare me over for another year

Oh death, oh death

Please spare me over for another year

My daddy was a miner

He's now in the air and sun

He'll be with you fellow workers

Till every battle's won

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

Which side are you on?

I will keep going. This has been fun and a great learning experience.

Was going to go with a cover from this band but I love so many other songs from them more so I'll just take my home (Women) and throw a dart at one of my 10 favorite songs:

20.xx Bobby Tanqueray - Lake Street Dive (Women)

Rachel Price's voice is just sublime.
This is new to me. I really like the bass and slightly jazzy feel.

Edit: I dunno - maybe jazzy is not the right word...?

I also love live versions.

And, crazily enough, it was listed as Pop on my video.

Eep was right...

...Pop found me.

👍

I didn't hear the black metal

A little early with the pick today, but what the hell, I've gotta be up for meetings early, won't get to make an appropriate EST pick, and I've got picks to spare. I'm in no rush or anything, just bored and want to pick...therefore...

Round 21.xx

Genre - Rock

Artist - We Were Promised Jetpacks

Song - It's Thunder And It's Lightning (Studio)

(Live at the Doug Fir in Portland, OR -- on KEXP during Musicfest NW)

I love everything about this, from the ominous, desperate lyrics to the sense of foreboding in the music. A job well done for Scottish miserabilists. And that brogue! I linked a live version, too. The recorded version is on Spotify.

Lyrics for MoCS:

Right foot
Followed by a left foot
We'll guide you home before your curfew
and into your bed

Standing on our tip-toes
Peering through open windows
I swear I heard my name

Sit tight with the lights off
Waiting for my brain to start
Trying to work things out
It's thunder and it's lighting
And it's all things too frightening
I could barely see outside

Your body was black and blue
It struck twice there's nothing new

Since Pop and Dance may not get rolled again, this song is a good example of how the Drop has impacted how popular song structure this century.   Not all songs have one but they seem a lot more prevalent than they used to be.

This Madonna song goes intro-chorus-verse-chorus-verse-buildup-drop-chorus-chorus.  The drop effectively replaces a bridge in the song structure.  It serves the same purpose but is almost entirely rhythmic rather than melodic.  In this song, the build up to the drop starts around the 2:45 mark and stretches out for almost a full minute.  That's cool (but still too long) on the dance floor but isn't ideal for a non-dancing listener.

I think its contributed to song bloat making the three minute single more of an exception than the rule.  That 1975 song I drafted in Pop has one of the shortest Drops I've heard.  Like the Madonna song, it starts around 2:45 but gets it over with in less than ten seconds.
I meant to comment on this earlier, but I fell behind and wanted to listen better.

First off, "drop" is new to me. Thanks for marking it clearly. This specific example reminds me of something pre-2000, so I don't think it is a spotlight.

Principles Of Lust - Enigma - Spotify

I'm not sure that I understand drop yet, but this has helped.

Thanks for the breakdown.

Edit: OK, I did the wiki search. I think I have it now. Thnx again.

This is great. As is often the case, I prefer the live version - but both sweet.

I dig the brogue too.

The bass is strong - and of course I love the lyrics..

... I swear I heard my name.

Sorry fellas ... crazy weekend and even crazier start to the workweek. Jumped into the thread and I'm 3 pages behind ...  :bag:

I'll catch up on my picks today, I promise.

Sure.

Ok, at first I was going to try for something obscure & less mainstream, but -

It is like that football draft where one of your favorite players keeps falling...until you can't not pick him. That's me, with this pick.

It will be the 3rd time this artist has been selected , but the 1st time under his own name, alone. And, as with Amy, I believe the multiple selections are deserved.

21.xx Jack White - Lazaretto - (Rock; 2014) - Spotify

I think 80's may be a fan of this as well.

😉

My veins are blue and connected
And every single bone in my brain is electric
But I dig ditches like the best of 'em
Yo trabajo duro
Como en madera, ¿y eso?
Como en madera, ¿y eso?

And even God herself has fewer plans than me
But she never helps me out when my scan's for free, though
She grabs a stick and then she pokes it at me
When I say nothing, I say everything
Yeah when I say nothing, I say everything

They put me down in a lazaretto
Born rotten, bored rotten
Making models of people I used to know
Out of coffee and cotton
And all of my illegitimate kids have begotten
Thrown down to the wolves, made feral for nothing
Quarantined on the Isle Of Man
And I'm trying to escape any way that I can, oh
Any way that I can, oh

I have no time left
Time is lost
No time at all, throw it in a garbage can
And I shake God's hand
I jump up and let her know when I can
This is how I'm gonna do it

They wanna blow down the prison
They're lighting fires with the cash of the masses
And like the dough I don't fall down
I'm so Detroit I make it rise from the ashes

19th Round - Dessa - "Mineshaft II" (Female)

You hung up the phone, you listened to the dial tone
And you stared at the stove until the beeping started
You read some love letters some threats
And some you couldn't tell apart
That you keep under the bed at the apartment
And then you did what he asked you to do
You opened your heart up
Right there on a napkin on the carpet
And part of it was frostbit
But you've always been a smart kid
Could still distinguish, the blood black as pitch
Valves had gone stiff, veins and scar tissue
Four chambers just a standard issue
But none had room, forgiveness is huge
And you had two full of ice water
One fulla salt, one packed with coal
Eager and ready and willing to find fault

Love these guys.

I saw them open for the band I'm about to pick for this round and they were awesome.  Currently touring the US--well worth seeing.

21.xx  Frightened Rabbit - The Modern Leper  (Rock; 2008)

I believe tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of Scott Hutchison's suicide.  I still get choked up thinking about his death.  Still makes me so sad.

They're probably my favorite band of the latter half of this century thus far.  He was such a great front man for the band and super talented. Here's a live, acoustic version of the same song.

Gonna tip back a couple in his memory tonight. :banned:
