This is from one of my favorite albums since 2000. Difficult to pick a single song because they're all great.

I love Sing the Changes from that Fireman record.3.xx - The Fireman - Dance 'Til We're High (Old Fart)
Paul McCartney is arguably the most famous living musician unless some random YouTuber from Asia passed him recently. As arguably the most famous living musician, Sir Paul doesn't have to make new music. He could sit in one of his homes and count his millions. But he's an artist and creating is what artists do.
He's stayed busy over the past two decades with six solo albums, a couple of Classical projects and assorted oddball projects like this one from 2008. They definitely have their peaks and valleys(except perhaps for 2002's "Chaos and Creation..." LP which is brilliant) but I love how Paul always seems to be having a good old time, whether he's banging on a box guitar with members of Nirvana or dad dancing with Rihanna and Kanye.
But back to the Fireman. This record finds Macca collaborating with Youth from Killing Joke. McCartney wrote all the songs and plays all of the instruments with Youth twiddles the knobs. His side projects allow McCartney more room to experiment than on albums with his name on the cover. It's an album created on the fly in the studio so it has some ideas that aren't fully realized. But there are a handful of moments that hint at what the Beatles might have done if they stayed together into their 60s. "Dance 'Til We're High" is one of the standout tracks--it's a typically simple Paul tune hoisted up on a wall of sound. Take away the huge production and there's probably just a silly love song but what's wrong with that.![]()

Wikipedia had The Killers as six or seven different types of "rock." There was a qualifier before each. I laughed a little bit as I picked them, but I don't think I was stretching it or anything. Just felt a little guilty that I didn't pick another band or two from the aughts that was both essential and purely traditional rock.I intentionally made the categories broader this time to try for inclusive music and minimal genre arguments.
But Rock is just too damn big.
Serious question, rock...what is spotlighting?.
Jesus, I just spotlighted without knowing it.
Spotlighting is writing about a band in the thread that is still eligible to be selected, therefore potentially spurring people's memories. It's a no-no because people feel like they're sort of acting unethically/cheating if they then select that band, which shouldn't be the case, but it's always nice to select your own band from your own memory. Sort of a funny pride thing.Serious question, rock...what is spotlighting?
It is foreign to me.
Thnx buddy.

Yeah, Rev. Horton stood in to headline the Car Show today after Wanda Jackson cancelled. But Jim sits in on guitar with a bunch of different acts at the festival. You and Jim Heath and the Rockabilly Fest?
Shoot me a PM if you want. Thus, it would be a true rebuild of at least 2 or 3 years - unless luck.
Are you really there and is it really going on right now? I just remembered because I only went down the Rev. Horton Heat/Jim Heath rabbit hole because of your comments in the thread I started about over a year ago. It was interesting. He has his own model of guitar from Gretsch, I think. I wound up watching him discuss it.Yeah, Rev. Horton stood in to headline the Car Show today after Wanda Jackson cancelled. But Jim sits in on guitar with a bunch of different acts at the festival.
Any cover is fair game as long as it was released after 1/1/00. The age of the source material doesn't matter.I have a question. If a song is a cover of a pre-2000 release - but recorded by an old fart on an original release (as opposed to a compilation or similar) post 2000...is it eligible?
I went back to OP, but didn't see anything on this specific detail. Perhaps I missed it, or perhaps it is such common knowledge that it is implied.
Thnx in advance.
No we had to cancel our trip this year. Are you really there and is it really going on right now? I just remembered because I only went down the Rev. Anyway, if you're there, have a cool time.
The song my guy is covering is about one hundred years old. A nice, fresh take on older material is always nice.I have a question. If a song is a cover of a pre-2000 release - but recorded by an old fart on an original release (as opposed to a compilation or similar) post 2000...is it eligible?

3.xx - One Hundred Days - Mark Lanegan (Rock and/or Old Fart)
Bonus live track that is really my favorite - but not my draft choice -> Mark Lanegan - One Hundred Days @ Bakehouse Studios, Richmond (10th July 2010) - only for those who really like the original - this is more emotional, but of lower quality.
This could be Rock or Old Fart - as Lanegan fronted the Screaming Trees in the 80's and 90's. I would appreciate feedback, if one category fits better than the other. It's not super heavy, so Old Fart might be better.
Anyways - I'm sticking to my theme of being lost (Rd 1 - Crazy) - gettin help from friends in redemption (Rd 2 - Hold Your Head High) - and now, this is about waiting for your ship to come in.
Most I know, consider this to be a sad song. I do not. To me it is about hope for the future and the where-with-all to hold out for it. It's one of my all time favs, that I go to often when I need to remind myself that things will work out. Also, as my theme is so story driven, I will once again include the lyrics - as they really make the point that I am going for:
When the willow bends towards the end of day
And twilight falls again
To the funny sound that a blackbird makes
Twilight falls again
As no good reason remains, I'll do the same
Thinking of you
One day a ship comes in, one day a ship comes in
But I can't say how or when
But I know somewhere the ship comes in every day
There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping
There is no crime to dreams like this
And if you could take something with you
It would be right
Something good
From my fingertips, the cigarette throws ashes to the ground
I'd stop and talk to the girls who work this street, but I got business farther down
Like one long season of rain, I will remain
Thinking of you
One day a ship comes in
From far away a ship comes in
One hundred days you wait for it
And you know somewhere the ship comes in every day
There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping
There is no crime to dreams like this
And if you could take something with you
It would be bright
Just like something good
One day a ship comes in
One hundred days you wait for it
Something bright
Something so good
One hundred days
A ship comes in every day
You know it's good
You know it's good
A ship comes in every day
One day a ship comes in
Its good
When it's something good

Since we have ol'fart now, I think Rock will be good.
I will also edit my original post to reflect this.
Thnx.
I think Beyoncé has been taken twice but under 2 different categories (R&B, women).Didn't expect the Raconteurs to be the first (and only so far) artist picked more than once. All I've heard of theirs is "Steady As She Goes".![]()
Seriously considered Tegan and Sara for this category.Round 2 - Where Does the Good Go? - Tegan and Sara - Woman.
The best rock band this century has producedI've picked this band before but I don't think anyones picked this song (or much from this album). It's pretty great IMO
Round 3 - Do Me a Favour - Arctic Monkeys (Rock)
I think we're back to regular draft order, so pick 4.01?Where are we at now?
That would make senseWe're at round four, so shouldn't the last person in order start?
I mean round one is 1.1, then the holder of the first overall pick is 2.16 or so (whatever is the last pick that round), and then 3.1, so whoever went last picks first in Round Four...I think.
I appreciate that you appreciate it. I almost always (and I qualify that because I'm sure there's once...) dig your perspective and posts, no matter how much I disagree with them. I think that comes from many, many positive interactions with you. I'm always willing to listen and hear, and you write and communicate in such a way that it's very intelligent and considered, two things I respect. You seem eminently fair, if I don't always agree. There are people on the board that have a calming effect on me personally. You're one of them. Also @rockaction I appreciate your ability to disagree with civility and humility in the other thread.
Round 4 categories.Reminder for rockaction, round #4 is punk et.al. and old fart (again).
