HC Sean Payton, DEN (1 Viewer)

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports Sean Payton "fears" a potential power struggle with a member of the Denver Broncos ownership group.

It's described as "an issue" in Payton's interview with the Broncos. The former Saints head coach has lost some helium towards finding a job in recent days with the Broncos reportedly going towards DeMeco Ryans as their lead candidate and the Panthers hiring Frank Reich. It's looking more likely than ever that Payton will remain on FOX -- something he at one point before the end of the season described as a "70% chance."

LOL at him using the 70% line.

He ain’t 25M and 2x 1sts good.
That's different then saying "he sucked without Brees".
Oh I wasn’t saying he sucked without Brees.

You weren't? What's this supposed to mean (your words)?

"I remember a whole lot of suck after Brees retired."

Then the backtrack began, after being questioned/corrected. Hilarious.
Exactly that. There were some down times. I saw some sucky football.

First you’re weird to me over a comment about Vegas because you literally didn’t understand an obvious joke, and now this. Two strikes and you’re out. Welcome to my ignore list.

As could be seen coming a mile away, a vintage HSG backtrack.

It was a joke all along guys! Even though you tried to defend it in between. HUH?

So "He sucked without Brees." was a joke. How was that a joke? Or funny? The desperation and backtrack, now that IS funny.

Interesting nugget via @AndrewJuge: "Sean Payton does not want to go back to FOX."

I think we're nearing the end, yeah.

Do you think we will hear an announcement tomorrow johnny

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Sean Payton's interview with the Cardinals "went well" and "it sounds like that is still a possibility and still in play."

Rapoport added that the Texans have not scheduled a second interview with Payton and it "does not feel like there's any momentum there." Payton is also still in play for the Broncos pre Rapoport, though DeMeco Ryans is the reported favorite there. Ultimately Rapoport said that it "leans towards returning to FOX now," which jives with what we've heard the past few days.

With the #Texans eying DeMeco Ryans and his desire to interview with Houston next week, that may not align with #Broncos timeline despite DEN thinking highly of Ryans. GM George Paton and CEO Greg Penner have continued conversations with other candidates throughout the process.

LOL at him using the 70% line.
been saying that all along he's not leaving to go to these lousy franchises.
Yea, the Rams/Chargers/Bucs could all be open next year. All in sunny weather and two have ownership who have went all-in to win a Super Bowl recently. The other has a stud QB.

I also think the Saints asking price is way too high. A first is a little crazy for a coach.

Tampa Gave Up Sapp and 1sts for Grudden back in the day I think Payton is super Overrated and not even near worth what the Saints want honestly.

Cliffy Clavin: I'll take "NFL Owners" for $600, Alex

Alex Trebek: "Malcolm Glazer"

Lol that was 21 years ago. It worked out for the Bucs in that they won the SB but I doubt we see that again.

If he doesn’t coach this year does another year toll off that Saints contract? Or does he have to perform in order for that to happen? Would significantly reduce draft capital if so.

He becomes a FA sometime in January of 2025. This won't be impacted if he sits in the booth.

ETA-sorry I typed 2024, it's 2025.

Depends on contract language. I don’t know if there’s some kind of typical boilerplate in coaches’ contracts that covers this specifically.

Some on Saintsreport think an NFL team could — if they wanted to — contest the duration of a coach’s contract and see if a court would find that the years of service operate more like players’ contracts. If the contract language allows for interpretation or wiggle room … really don’t know.

I don't think there is any ambiguity about it. He's under contract. If he thinks he can sue to get out of it he can take that option.

So he shows up to coach…do the Saints fire the current coach. Or does Payton tell the current coach to get out of his office and have a seat in the corner? If the Saints play hard ball Payton could make a poop show in NO.
Doesn't work like that. Remember, the Saints are still paying him right now even though he's "retired" as coaches' contracts are guaranteed. So it's not like the Saints are in breach of contract or in some kind of holding pattern.

If Payton were to just show up to the facility to resume coaching without the Saints' prior approval, he'd likely be kindly asked to leave the premises. Gently, very gently at first, given his status with the franchise. But he can't just show up unannounced, make a stink, and force his way back on the Saints' sideline. Would not happen, will not happen. He pushes it that hard, the logical conclusion is that he's carted off by local deputies. But like I said, it's a hard immutable fact that it won't happen.
You still standing by the statement that the Saints are still paying him right now? I'm not going to say you're wrong, but the majority disagree with you. If the Saints are paying him, a 5th will likely pry him free if only one team is interested.

I think the Saints would stand pat if the best offer was a fifth.

EDIT: Missed the “if they’re paying him” qualifier. That’s moot, though — the Saints aren’t paying Payton.

The idea was not Payton suing the Saints … but the Saints suing Payton to hold him to two additional seasons (as opposed to calendar years) of service. Dependent of the air-tightness of the contract language.

He's under contract until 2025 and no team is signing him to force the Saints to sue. I don't know how more plain it can be.

So getting "nothing" for him in the end is the way to go? Or move on and end up with some draft capital, at least.

The bolded is actually what's in question. Does his contract 'expire' when the 2024-25 league year ends (~March 2025)? Or instead, does his Saints contract stipulate a certain number of years of service, like a player contract -- and that he still owes the Saints two seasons? Some Saints fans consider this an open question that comes down to the contract's language.

It does not matter anymore now but I had heard from Allbright and Randy Mueller that it was for 2 years. So no stipulation for service, his contract term was measured solely by dates.

Breaking: Saints and Broncos are finalizing compensation in return for Super Bowl-winning HC Sean Payton, sources tell ESPN. This clears the way for Payton to sign with the Broncos to become Denver’s next head coach.

And so Payton is expected to head to Denver as its next HC.
********

Compensation: Denver’s 2023 first-round pick and next year’s second-round pick for Sean Payton and the Saints’ 2024 third.

Gonna be fascinating to see how Wilson does next year…if Payton gets him squared away (and he has to believe he can or he would not take this job) the AFC somehow gets even stronger.

I legit think Payon was Denver's third or fourth choice for the job so I"m surprised they paid what they did. I've heard good things about their ownership group but this makes me question what I heard. And I'm not trying to knock Payton, just the process.

ETA which is pick 29 as it came from Miami via SF

Got one from Miami in the Chubb deal.

Bradley Chubb trade. end's up at #29.
Ah, I'm confused I guess. Is it the Niners pick 30?

Miami lost their 1st rounder this year. It says forfeited on your link.

From down here, this reporting looked like a smokescreen - especially once Jim Harbaugh was off the table.

I don't think it as a smokescreen myself and fact the Ryans hire was announced almost right after this hit is kind of telling to me. Harbaugh and Ryans I do believe where they first two choices, Quinn might have been third.

Now that might have had to do all along with compensation. That I don't know. As in if Payton did not cost them trading anything to acquire maybe he'd have been higher up their list.

Ya i knew that. But don't think that's the Denver pick. I think they updated tankathon already and it's pick 30 from SF (they just didn't show that it's through denver)

haha surprised you hadn't heard of them, I thought they were a pretty common site but I guess not. It always lays out the order really well throughout the season with tie breakers and stuff worked in.
