How drunk was Namath during the halftime interview (1 Viewer)

Anyone watch the Halftime Interview that Suzie Kolber did with Joe Namath? The man was slurring his speech so bad you could barely understand him. Then Suzie compares him to Pennington and he blurts "I could kiss you" and I half thought he was gonna grab her and plant a sloppy kiss on her. It was hillarious. Thanks Joe, you made my day

Gotta love that stuff. That's why I love Namath. The Man was hammered, and you know what?? Right now, Suzy is probably slamming the living daylights out of him.Or - He could just be shot from all the hits he took. I like to think that it wa dthe alcohol.

There was a time when I saw Broadway Joe almost every day (at his football camp--it was held at the colllege I attended and worked at). He definitely was liquored up tonight. He's a decent guy. He was always friendly and remembered people's names and would say hi to everyone.

Smokin JHoe... Gotta love the guy. He's a decent man, no doubt about it. You can tell.

My uncle used to party with the guy at the Univ of Alabama and from what I've heard, Joe is quite the party animal.

Joe is a party animal and it was the reunion of the greatest Jets for the past 40 years. I'm sure the booze was flowing in the green room. Funny - any clips out there of it to post? He is a class guy - always respectful to people that meet him.

I guess I'll be the lone dissenter here. I thought it was disrespectful of the ESPN producers to put Namath on the air for an live interview when he was obviously not at his best. And to top it off, after he made the "kiss" comment the first time, Mike Patrick threw it back to Suzie to continue the interview after breaking for a quick play call.It was hard to watch.

That's fantastic.!!! I am LMAO at 4:45am in the morning listening to it.Joe's a real happy guy .... :D  :D  Ain't technology (and this forum) Great !

Suzy was all class there. After he told her for the second time that he wanted to kiss her, she says "Well thats quite a compliment!". Class act. If I was hitting on Suzy and got shot down, thats what I'd want her to say.

Nameth looks like a big drunken loser to me. I'm shocked people here aren't making fun of him. It would be hard to do more to embarrass yourself in an interview like that.

ESPN must have been ecstatic. They pumped up their aniversery episode by pushing the 'anything can happen' vibe that they had in their early years (how many of their first year correspondents did they say ended up serving jail time?! half!) and Broadway Joe ends up trying to stick his tongue down their sideline correspondents throat. Highlight real stuff for sure. Dont be fooled, ABC, CBS, and maybe even Fox would have been horrified, but ESPN loves it. And I love it too.

That's because most people here have a sense of humor and don't take ourselves too seriously.Namath is a legendary party animal. And a HOF quarterback. And one of the most recognizable athletes of all time.Do you think he really cares about what people think? Do you think people will actually think differently of him because of this? Lighten up.

There's no doubt this will affect people's attitudes about Joe. I never saw Nameth play and I don't care about the Jets. When I saw Nameth I was wondering whether he had a stroke or not because he was such a mess. After he tried to plant one on the reporter my next thought was whether or not he was married. Maybe if I grew up a Nameth fan I could just ignore the whole thing. But as it stands my main impression of Joe is as an drunken idiot. That was an embarrassing moment no matter how much you like Nameth. It's definitely funny but it's funny at Nameth's expense. I can't imagine he's watching footage of that inteview with any pride at all.

 So what you're saying is that you lose the respect of any person that you witness a little tipsy?????? I can understand if he was being beligerant, but he was just having a good time, something that you have obviously not done before...

Hey it was a late game! Namath was in the suites doing a good PR job for the Jets and the guy had a few cocktails..So What!! ESPN asked him to do a quick interview and he was a little buzzed up, no big deal. Everybody in the stands was the same way! I loved it!!

"My name is Joe Namath. It's classy for me, a man who has a wife and two daughters, to be hitting on a chick in front of a national audience. I was respectful to Suzie, of course I was! How could you NOT call me a class act? I mean, Suzie's not a REAL journalist, right? Just another sideline bimbo for me to hit on. You know what I mean? It's the sixties, I'm Broadway Joe, I'm wearing this dapper full length fur coat -- what chick WOULDN'T want to kiss me? Oh boy am I happy!"

Good lord. I hope some of you guys never have to see what 90% of NFL active players get up to on the road. What the h#$L do you think goes on?

If you saw the game I don't know how you can refer to him as 'a little tipsy.' He was shattered and he humiliated himself in front of the whole country. It's one thing to be drunk at a game. It's another to get bombed before a national interview and hit on the reporter. The man could barely talk. Should I really cheer him on for that?Like I said, the whole thing is a riot, but it's all at Joe's expense.Isn't Joe still married?

Who said they don't? How is that relevant to anything that has been discussed here?

You sound like my mom. Jeez, what are you 60 year old bible thumper southern republican? What is embarassing about someone who haves fun a little more intoxicated than you do? Who is a little more 'flirtatious' than you think someone should be? Who are you to ####en judge Joe Namath? I know I have no ### #### arguement to make against a guy who is all abouy happy, fun, peace, love and rock-n-roll or whatever.GB people who can still have fun and be happy at Joe's age. GB viagra, and GB Broadway JoeJAA

Whatever's going on, it's not going on during an on-air interview.

Who are you to ####en judge Joe Namath?
We aren't supposed to judge Joe Namath? What reasons do you have to back up this statement? What I found offensive is that Joe showed an utter lack of respect to a reporter on live tv. Top this off with the fact that Namath is married with two kids, and I don't see how anyone could be defending his actions.Having fun is one thing, but making a mockery of the interview and degrading that reporter was dispicable.

Because this is the real friggin world, not BYU extended coast to coast. In the real world guys have a little too much to drink and flirt with chicks, especially when they are retired hall of fame quarterbacks. So what? ESPN grabbed him out of the booth, its not like he works for them. So who's fault is it? This idiotic sense of outrage is the joke. You got Randy Moss running over cops and William Green falling on butcher knives, but Broadway Joe has a couple too many and he's the bad guy? Screw that, I like guys like him because at least he's genuine. Better that than smilin Deon Sanders stabbing people in the back when the cameras go off, or trottin out some other smilin wannabe idiot to parrot meaningless compliments to his old team. I'm glad for once they dont have to sugar coat everything and show Warners hideous wife 50 times to showoff what family men NFL players are. Namath didnt give a rats ### then, and I guarantee he hasnt given it a second thought now. Deal with it.

Jeez, what are you 60 year old bible thumper southern republican?
So public drunkenness and nationally televised lechery are OK, but reading the Bible, being from the South or being a Republican are Bad Things?Don't get me wrong; I got a kick out of Joe's drunken attempt to hook up with Suzy. He's Broadway Joe, and he's got a reputation to uphold. But that's an interesting contrast there between what's being defended and what's being thrown out as an insult.

Calling him classy might be a little off base, but I find it nice to see a guy who is willing (he agreed to the interview) to go on the air and be "Joe Namath." Sure he could have said no to the interview because after having a few drink he might say something that isn't PC or he could have gone on the air and said the same bs that we hear athletes say all the time, only to watch the news a few days later and see that they lived their lives in the exact opposite manner that they preached. You don't have to respect him for his womanizing and partying ways, but at least respect the fact that he doesn't feel the need to be a fraud or a fake. It's a shame that so many people feel that our sport "idols" need to fit a certain mould. I have a feeling that great number of people on this board would have led a very similar lifestyle that Joe did, if they were given the same opportunities that he had.

Lack of respect? Says who? Ask Susie ... was she offended? Maybe those two are friends and its an inside joke. W(hat)TF do you know? You are guessing! No have no frikken clue what was going on except what (in your mind) you are judging. Period. You are sounding like the liberal media. Making statements on what YOU think transpired. On what YOU think should have happened. On what YOU think happened between Joe and Suzie. You have no idea.

For all I know (and I dont know much), Suzie could have been flattered. She interviews football players for a living. What she got a TV was nothing to what I am confident she gets on a regular basis.

In seriousness, if Suzie was offended, it would be real easy for her to ask and get an appology. I am sure Joe would give it in a heartbeat.

Hopefully I have answered why I feel you are judging Joe. And why I think you have no right.

This is not an issue of political correctness. There is nothing politically correct about showing some restraint and acting like a man. He knew in advance that he was going to be interviewed on television by Suzie. He should have A) Waited until after the interview to get smashed or B) turned down the interview altogether. This is not a difficult issue. Joe was an ### and any aura of greatness he had in my mind will now be overshadowed by his disrespectful and piggish attitude in that interview. Sure, I still like the guy and what he did for football, but anyone who can't respect other people loses some points with me.

Jeez, what are you 60 year old bible thumper southern republican?
What an idiotic comment. I enjoyed seeing Joe be Joe. But what's your purpose in ripping people who belong to that category. Is there something wrong with being 60 or southern, or republican or a bible thumper? Or all of these things? What a jack*ss.

Im not defending what he did. I am defending his right and you'all judging him because you think it was 'improper' or 'outrageous', etc.I encourage you to make your own opinions, but to judge him on it is not right. What is the difference between 'forming your own opinion' and 'judging' you ask?Opinion: What Joe did is not something I agree with.Jusdging: Joe should be embarassed and his wife upset because he was trying to kiss Susie.JAA

Its called stereo-typing. Without getting into too much off-topic discussion, I like stero-types. I think they serve a prupose. The post in to which I responsed sound like a stero-typical 60 year old bible thumper southern republicanHopefully that answered your question as it was not ment as an insult to the poster, or the 60 year old bible thumper southern republican,

I sound like the liberal media? Nice straw man....I'm not falling for it.I have absolutely no idea if it was an 'inside joke'. Although I seriously doubt it (Suzie cut the interview short, which leads me to believe she had had enough of him), it's always a possiblility. It does not matter. Joe got liquored up and repeatedly asked some chick to kiss him. My judgement of Joe is that his actions were not classy nor were they respectful. I have every right in the world to make that judgement, whether I'm correct or not. That's just my opinion, which differs from yours.
