Hurricane Sandy (2 Viewers)

If you read one of the links Jewell posted you can see how some of these 17 people died or were killed by Sandy. -Tree fell on two kids outside playing in the middle of the storm.-Guy let his dog out to go wee wee and he was killed.-Electrocuted by down power wires. What are people thinking? You don't go out in the middle of these storms.
And on the flip-side it's amazing that only 17 people have been reported dead from this storm.

That's true

Not to seem callous, but WTF thought it was a good idea to take the HMS Bounty out for a sail with this storm bearing down?

I can't speak to that specific instance, but when I was in the Navy we put out to sea three times during a hurricane. The worst place for a ship during gale force winds is dockside - the theory being you would sustain much more damage slamming up against the pier/warf.

Consider myself lucky , have power, trees that did fall away from house, fence needs fixing and my roof patch didnt work so need that fixed and then new sheetrock, sucks refixing something you thought was fixed

record high 32.5 foot wave in NYC harbor last night

no official deaths in the Breezy Point (yet) but obviously devastating with over 100 homes lost

two biggest challenges - restoring power and mass transit

worst disaster in the 100 + year history of MTA

[*]Con Ed - 750K in the 5 boroughs out of power

[*]Steam system south of 42nd Street shutdown pre-emptively - no heat, but hopefully will come back up

[*]power 2-3 days from being restored

[*]trains were moved to higher ground but all 7 East River subway tunnels flooded

[*]limited bus service this afternoon and most buses will be running tomorrow

[*]all airport runways are flooded and closed - no estimate on damage to runway lighting

[*]livery cabs and black cabs allowed to pickup street fares

[*]NYU two downtown hospital evacuated & Coney Island Hospital as well

[*]Bellevue Hosptital is on backup generators

[*]the crane on West 57th (1K feet up) is stable

Having only been to the area once, the only pics I've seen for which I have a reference point to are the Westside Highway and the PATH station in Hoboken (where I watched the first Kings playoff game/victory). All I can say is damn. Still waiting to hear back from one friend who lives on the Lower East side, but I think he skipped town yesterday AM. Good luck east coasters.

The picture of what looked like an entire neighborhood burned to the ground, holy crap that sux. I can't believe more people were not killed in those fires at Breezy Point. It looked like a war zone.
 Just catching up on images and such. Damn. Glad people got out safely. Anyone know if any FBGs were in that area?

They set out last week. The captain thought he could beat the storm.http://nation.time.com/2012/10/30/hms-bounty-crewperson-dead-captain-missing/
man, when the weather started getting rough, that tiny ship was tossed
The problem was they lost power underway, both generators failed, and she became a sitting duck, could not pump out water fast enough.

Not sure what other Marylanders/North Virginians think but here is how I'd rank recent natural occurrences:

Snowpocolypse>>>>>>>Irene>>>>Sandy>earthquake

re: subway system Gov Cuomo said the MTA will restore parts of the system soon but the damage to the rails and tunnels is unprecedented

Holland Tunnel will remain closed

JFK should open tomorrow, LaGuardia will take longer

as an aside tidbit, Metro North has a 40 foot boat laying across the tracks

I've heard a lot about the evacuated hospital including the NICU, which is crazy. IS it safe to assume since they are not reporting any casualties in relation to it that all the evacuees made it to their new locations safely?

I know those tiny babies are sometime pretty fragile, it is a frightning thought haveing to move them in the midst of this.

Maybe you're older than most around here, but did you serve on something like this?

That derecho (windstorm) that we had during the summer caused more damage than Sandy in my area of DC. During that derecho we lost electricity and there were trees down. During Sandy we didn't lose electricity, and I was surprised to wake up and see that there were no trees down and really not even many limbs down.

T&P for all you colonists. Looking at the pictures is amazing, about what I expected but still mind blowing. Any d-bags trying to loot?

I went out with that intent this morning, but unfortunately Midtown is completely normal today. People and cars all around, locally owned businesses open, the chain stores are closed (not sure why but it's true - maybe the locals live here, and the chains hire people who take mass transit).

"I have a job in New Jersey that is much bigger than presidential politics," Gov. Chris Christie said on the show Fox & Friends. "I couldn't care less about that."At least someone gets it in today's political bull####. As a fellow fatso I support you
They didn't seem to happy with that on that show.Christie would have whupped both of these clowns in a POTUS election.

No damage for anybody I know thankfully. Pittsburgh was pretty mild. We got the wind, but it didn't do any real damage at all.

My family and friends in both NYC and Philly somehow were unscathed and all have power.

NJ shore really got wacked though. Horrible pictures.

How does a tanker wash up on shore in new york?!

Didn't Obama say pretty much the same thing yesterday?

Just found out one neighbors house was demolished by a tree while they were out watching the storm on the deck. had they been in the house, who knows what would have happened.

I still don't know if my beach cabana was destroyed or not. I could take the half hour ride and see buy it's such a beautiful day I think I will stay home and do soccer drills with the kids instead. I hope everyone made out ok. Otis?

I'd vote this incantation of Christie because his unpolished and frank delivery contradicts just about everything about modern day politicans. It comes across as sincere and realistic. As one of the "future" stars of the Republican Party....its not a popular move (no matter how right it is) to give ANY pop to the POTUS this close to an election.

Good point, I took all those trees down after that mess.

Obama saying that is pretty much what was expected. What else is his to do? Not that Obama was wrong but he is in an election and is trying to come off with empathy while Christie didn't even have to bring up Obama. I'm an Obama supporter and not a huge fan of Christie but it was certainly refreshing although it'll be interesting to see how his tiff with Langford plays out.

Local schools and municipalities completely jumped the gun by canceling school, moving trick-or-treat, closing liquor stores, etc. By tomorrow night, it might not even be raining, yet our trick-or-treating has been moved to Saturday night.

Yes, we had some damage, and there has been some localized flooding, but there was no reason to make those decisions on Monday.

The MTA will restore limited bus service today at 5pm, with more service coming tomorrow. Fares will be waived for the time being.
Woo hoo - love free stuff! I'll probably walk.Office on East 40th has no power. So much for the report the grid is down below 39th.
