OK, this might seem a bit strange coming from a lesser-known FBG like shamwow... but alas, I take off my mask to reveal one Homer J Simpson, world-famous debaucher and all-around wonderful guy. ---> :P Rambo above has inspired me to offer up my abundance of luxury to anyone that's really in the #### right now. I live in my sister's house in East Hampton, about 2 hours or so from the city. Single guy living in a big 4 bedroom house which now has power and cable and interwebs and everything. If you have the need to get away and the means to do so, I fully offer up a place to stay with a fridge full of beer and food, warm beds, a great area for entertainment and restaurants, and maybe some peace and relaxation. I'm a bartender and will be working Friday day shift and Saturday night shift, so you'll barely even see me if you want to come out for the weekend.I don't know if this sounds weird or anything, but now that I have power I almost feel guilty. Good enough reason as any to share my space, I guess. Oh, and if you have teenage daughters please disregard this offer.

Class act.
Otis, the offer is definitely open to you, my man.

Much appreciated, and tempting. The offer itself is worth a ton. I'll probably stay local where we have family to help out/family to help, but really appreciate it.

To all of you guys who are dealing with a lot of adversity right now: hang in there and stay positive.

Just got my power back yesterday evening and will probably be having as many family/friends as I can bring over tonight.Anyone know how much I can trust food in the freezer if power was out for 2 days? I just opened it once for a few seconds during the outage. Problem is by the time I got back from work, everything was frozen again, so I don't know what its status was right before the power came back.
Depends on how full the freezer was. Was it packed? Half full? Just a couple things?
About 75% full. Mainly meats, vegetables, some frozen pizza, and ice cream. I wish I had filled up ziplock bags with water and threw it in there, like someone had advised.

Ice cream just toss it. Assuming it didn't melt all over. The other stuff I think you are fine. But I just ate some sausage links out of the freezer that the expiration date was from March

Ditch the veggies, just because their texture will be ruined. The meat should be fine.

Meats will stay frozen two days without power. Breads will not - and I'd be suspect of the pizza as a result. Ice cream is toast. Vegetables are probably fine, but as mentioned previously, texture may be shot. If you use them for soups, consider keeping them. Otherwise, toss.

Haven't been able to check in since early Monday.First day back to work - still no power at my Mom's in Garden City or our newly constructed home in Wantagh - which Thank God didn't have any damage. Cold showers for 3 days at my Moms - damn you oil heat. The amount of trees down and draped over power lines in the Garden City area is unreal. Can't imagine having power anytime soon. Huge lines at gas stations with the National Guard and their Humvees directing traffic.ALL that pales in comparison to 3 of my friends who all lost their homes in South Merrick, Freeport & Seaford. Anything south of Merrick Road is screwed. The water came up to Sunrise Highway ?! The Nautical Mile in Freeport is gone. Soaked carpets, mattresses, couches, etc litter curbsides.Felt so bad for a friend in South Merrick yesterday - he watched the water bubble up underneath his wooden floors and fill up his house. He has a wet waterline on the sheetrock of his living room about 3 feet high. 2 year old twins and his wife is pregnant - and they have no place to go. Brought him air mattresses, sleeping bags, cooler full of ice and a 12 pack of beer - not sure which item he enjoyed receiving the most? His house smells like low tide and it's only 2-3 days after the flood.I can't complain about my situation after seeing the destruction south of Merrick Road
SUNRISE HIGHWAY????????Jesus. Those little south shore towns, the streets flood with a normal high tide.

Yeah . . . . so sad.Drove down to the end of Hewlett Ave yesterday to the Marina in Merrick. Saw a boat sticking out of someone front window.

Friends from the LES came up last to midtown last night with their kiddies for Trick or Treating. Well, they also wanted to take showers and charge their electronic devices.

We are very fortunate. Six or seven blocks south and we'd be down hard.

Hey...let's run a marathon!
So, so stupid. The running and exercise nerds should put their stupid little jogging game on hold for a bit. As if we don't have enough gridlock and mess in the city right now?
The running nerds would probably prefer it be cancelled in most cases. How do you even get there.I'm sure the organizer wanted to roll forward and the city wanted the revenue. I'd blame it on the elected officials

They stated exactly that on ABC news last night. Race brought 334 million(seems ridiculous) in revenue last year and the city needs to get back up and running to get some of that revenue.

Minor tip for anyone so interested in helping out - the shelters that are in our area are hanging in there with food for the most part but we have gotten word through church that what they are hurting for right now are bathroom supplies, which is obvious, but a really big one is toys and stuff for the kids. Obviously, the main focus is on the necessities, but the kids that are in these shelters or who lost everything in their home need some love too.

My wife and kids are going down to one of our local churches that is housing a bunch of families with all the toys in the house that we really don't need, board games, stuff like that. And baby supplies - diapers and wipes run out fast even under good conditions.

So, if you are looking to help your local shelters and churches with supplies, keep baby stuff and toys in mind as well if you can.

And the officials on Staten Island are doing exactly that. They're destroying the Mayor for going ahead with the marathon while they're still searching through rubble for bodies.Interestingly enough, they're also killing the Red Cross for offering them almost zero help to this point.

The marathon should be cut to a half marathon and include aid work to qualify for finishing the race.

This is correct.Any meats that are raw will be safe. Quality may suffer due to some thawing, but still safe. Anything that has any precooked meats (meatballs, sausage on the pizza, etc.) I probably wouldn't chance it. But a sealed up chest freezer will hold temperature for quite a while if you keep it shut.

Did you see that piece on NBC4? I just saw it and I live about 15 minutes away from there. I was welling up in tears watching it. I feel like driving over there and giving them clothes but theres one major problem... I have little gas. I dont have much else to provide.

Figured as much. They could pull a Myrtle Beach and cancel it the night before so the hotel reservations are non-refundable.

sowhatsnew515 deaths? I have news for you, the death toll will be alot higher. Just came from New Dorp Beach area. Got as close as possible to help freinds. Homes that aren't decimated and left standing but stucturely damaged are under water. 3 to 4 feet. Power lines down. Debris and boats pilled up that crashed and resting against homes left statnding. Folks are staying put to protect property from looters. But the water if not electrified, is toxic due to raw sewage and petrol in the water from marine engines. Folks cannot stay there tonight, but majority will. They have no place to go. Vehicles submerged. Even if operable, cannot find gasoline on the Island. Folks I talked to are very angry with this mayor, FEMA and Red Cross. I did not see one Red Cross or FEMA rep. The only team I saw was search and rescue. They are pulling bodies out of basements! South Beach, Midland Beach and New Dorp Beach are devastated. These folks need help! The essentials is all they are asking for right now. Water, clothing, food. By some miracle Bloomberg expects all to be welll by Monday. To add insult to injury, he will still have the Marathon Sunday. The man is insane and not fit to govern.11 Minutes Ago· Reply

Didn't the article you just mentioned above reference a relief station being set up in New Dorp?A number of my friends spent today volunteering in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and LI. Probably 10 of them. Authorities can't just snap their fingers and survey every square inch of land and immediately get aid there. It's not that simple. In some cases, people are going to need to chip in locally if neighbors require assistance.

As a runner, if I were signed up, I think I'd be hard-pressed to run the race. How do you relax before the race and not have all this suffering on your mind? How do you shuttle out to Staten Island and not think about the losses there? How do run through Queens and not think of the devastating fire? How do you block all of that out and concentrate on the long race? Why would you want to? I understand the revenue loss, but then ask for donations ...put together a concert in Central Park ...let people come in and volunteer to help clean up, as Otis mentioned (no chain saws). Boston offered marathon deferrals this year with the horrible heat. Is New York supposed to ignore Sandy and just carry on? I'm sure there are plenty of registered runners from NY and NJ and other places that can't get out of their own neighborhoods to compete. Don't add insult to injury by starting the marathon party without them.

This might not be the time, but there are actually some great homes down there. Living south of the Merrick, in any thing more than a simple second home, might not be the wisest thing going forward. We all know Freeport isn't the greatest place going, and they flood every good rain. I'd have no problem buying people out with federal money, its going on in places like Wayne and Bound Brook NJ. The world is changing and to keep living the path of water is going to be a challenge.

Power came back on for us this morning around 11. The house hit a low of 48 degrees inside last night and we didnt have a wood burning fireplace. The lights coming on and furnace starting up was such a good feeling. Good luck to everyone else still struggling.

Schumer said he was not certain whether the race should be run.
Needs to wait for the polling numbers before having an opinion.

The images, specifically on WNBC NY are, and I don't use this term lightly, Katrina-esque.

No one's comparing it to Katrina from a body count, but what I will compare is the compartive abandonment of the people.

Beyond heart wrenching.

My heart goes out to the lifeless and homeless. However...

I feel bad for Breezy, but Breezy is gone.

The Jersey shore was clearly under the crosshairs and the barrier islands took a devastating shot, but in many cases they are summer rentals and second and vacation homes.

But these poor bastards on staten island....

In many cases, they were not under mandatory evac. Many of the effected were in "Zone B". I don't fault whatever level of warning they do, this storm broke all the records and no one is clarivoyant.

Power is out to 2/3 of the island and for those not in the know, there are 3 bridges onto and off of the island. This sludge surge has been chemically texted to be revealed to by carrying fecal/seweage bacteria and gasoline and the advice to those folks is clean out your home. NY has no credibility since the air the week of 9/11 was given the "all clear" to keep digging.

They're devastated, they're there and they're alive. I'm sorry for the dead, but recovery efforts have to be second to relief for the living.

There's no markets open and you can't drive their anyway since most cars are destroyed. And if your car didn't get destroyed, you can't get g-damn gas.

And then, on top of all that, they want to fire the starting gun to the marathon from the Verrazano Bridge and cut off one of the 3 major ways out of down for 8-12 hours? Outrageous.

Set up 10,000 treadmills on Sheep Meadow and run your dopey Marathon there.

Here is Mad Dog Russo with a pretty good rant on the matter

yeah smack. that night, as i sat in my house and my windows shook and my roof trembled, there were people only ten minutes away from me getting hit by waves. its devastating and i dont think i realized the full level of the devestation until yesterday. here i sit with power and some missing shingles and theres people only a few miles away dealing in katrina like conditions.

For anyone in the Edison, NJ area that doesn't have power: Shoot me a message if you need a hot shower, a place to warm yourself, need to charge phones or laptops, or just need a place to warm yourself up and recharge your own batteries. Don't have much food since everything spoiled, but what I do have is available. I also have 5 gas stations within 2 miles that all have gas. Just shoot me a PM.

I live right there - just north of Sunrise.Got a large tree on the house / in the yard and no power - can't really complain.Waited for gas for about 45 minutes and I get to the front to find people sneaking in the exit and backing up when a car exits..... UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE.I'm like "Guy, the line is about a mile back"..... and his wife starts calling me all kinds of names including idiot...... SHEESH. Idiot or not it took me 2 seconds to figure out where the line started....People are getting edddddddgy!!Saw other another station with a police car at the exit and I bet there was an issue....

Mad Dog is spot on regarding the marathon, listened to him for a few hours today.

Big time T&P's to those still trying to dig out. My in-laws are on the North Shore of LI (Port Jeff area) and have been affected to varying degrees with no power, etc. My wife and I are heartbroken as two former Bronx and L.I. residents.

Still no power, heard today that it might not be restored until the 14th :lmao: Havinh no pwer seriously blows. all in all though we made out a lot better than many so I'm very thankful. We had a giant tree go down in the backyard but it missed the house. I bought a chainsaw at Home Depot this morning and took that ####er apart, which was very cathartic. Best wishes to everyone dealing with the aftermath.
