First taste test - pretty damn good. Might be the best value hard liquor I've had.

Kentucky's Finest Table Whiskey is good stuff. A little light for my taste, but the beauty of bourbon is that you can get a well made 80 prooder for $10.HMcK single barrel is pretty good too. And cheap. It's basically Evan Williams SB under a different name.

Spotted some Very Old Barton at a Virginia ABC store. Snagged a handle of the 86, but had to special order some 100 proof.

For any other cheap bourbon connoisseurs in VA, be sure to check it out. This is the stuff that Kentuckians love so much, it took forever to make enough to let any get across the state line.

Sadly, they did drop the 6 year age statement, but the 86 is still pretty good. I'll have to see about the 100, but I have little doubt that it'll still weigh in as a nice bargain for $13.

Picked up a bottle of Turkey 101 to sip on. With the seasons turning it is time to transition from beer back to bourbon. I'll drink as many BCBCS I can get my hands on next month, but otherwise I'm on the bourbon train until spring.

Makers 46 is good, I would never buy a bottle of it or order it while out though. It just isn't anything special, I prefer spicier/rye bourbons. It isn't bad though and if you prefer smooth bourbons try it out. Also, if drinking with amatuers it carries some social value because it is Makers and has a fancy bottle. I'm sure others here could give you more insight.

Actually that leads me to a question for everyone. What is your go to bourbon/whiskey when out at the bar? At home?

Looking back at last year's bourbon season I'd say 80% of my drinking was either WT 101 or Bulleit.

I've been putting off posting in here because I don't know that my topic officially qualifies as 'whiskey'. But I decided to throw caution to the wind and say heck with it. I REALLY like maple flavored whiskey. So far I have tried:

Crown Royal Maple

Jim Beam Maple

Cabin Fever Maple Flavored Whiskey

I think I recall reading earlier in the thread that if the drink is NOT 80 proof it doesn't qualify as whiskey. Well, the Crown and the Cabin Fever are both 80, but I think the Jim Beam is 70. I pretty much drink them straight or over some ice. I put it in a flask and take it with me when I play disc golf in the fall and winter. I also drink it when I am smoking cigars.

Reading this thread, I am going to guess that most here will think it is way too sweet, but I really like sweet. I like sweet and malty beers (hate the hops craze) and I like this maple whiskey. I also saw that Knob Creek has a 'Smoked Maple'. I might try that next.

Of the 3 I have listed... Jim Beam is the sweetest. Crown is the least sweet and has more of a Canadian Whiskey feel to it. I like the Cabin Fever the best so far. It kind of hits the mark right in between the other two. If 'flavored' whiskey is not whiskey to you... I understand. But if anyone is thinking about checking out the maple, go for it... you might be surprised.

It doesn't have to be exactly 80 proof to qualify as whisky. I think some types of whisky have certain minimum alcohol percentages at the time it goes into the cask, and perhaps at bottling, when water is typically added. I think the flavoring added to these whiskies would technically disqualify them from some regulated categories like bourbon, which is limited to certain ingredients. I've no doubt that whisky purists turn their nose up at the new flavored whiskies, but there is no denying their popularity. If you like it, I think most would agree there's no reason not to discuss it here. The aging process using different types of new and used (wine) wood barrels can impart a strong flavor to the liquid after distillation, so its not all that different from the pure whiskies. I haven't tried a flavored whisky yet and have no great desire to, but I probably used to say the same thing about flavored vodkas and I probably have 3 or 4 different varieties of those in my cabinet at home now.

I saw that the last time I was at the state store. I think I'm getting that next. The Knob Creek is 90 proof.

I actually went to the website for the Cabin Fever and the 'How It All Started' section was interesting:

I'm Rob Robillard, and I started distilling Cabin Fever Maple Flavored whiskey in my back yard. It turns out people just love it.1998 - My friends from Eastern Europe taught me the art of distilling. Godd friends huh?

Being from NH I decided to distill my own whiskey blended with grade B pure maple syrup. I welded a still together from 2 lobster pots, named him 'Buck' and got to work.

2006 - Due to all overwhealmingly positive feedback from friends and family we put our product on the market.

2007 - 2010 - We first entered the market of our home state of NH and within a few years expanded to 13 states. What a road trip that was.

Set the sales record at 36 Liquor stores in MA during a 3 hour tasting event.

2011 - Big year! Entered 4 more markets. Was #1 sampled product at the Beer, Burbon and BBQ show in Manhattan. We made it!

I'm usually skeptical of these 'backstories' but... if it is in fact true, thought it was interesting.

Once you get past the overpowering smell and the shock of the first 2 fingers the bourbon begins to grow on you and it quite nice for glasses 2-20

I would think if you use Knob Creek as the base, the end product will probably be pretty strong. Also, the Knob Creek is 90 proof where all the others are 80 or less.

Looks like retail for 15 yr is $80, 20 yr is $130 and 23 yr is $250. I'd imagine no store actually sells them for retail anymore.

Great taste and feel, with a surprising amount of smooth heat. Dangerously drinkable.

If this stays around $21 a bottle, it's my new staple. Highly recommend.

The sales rep was in the store and I asked him about Pappy. He said 2 weeks ago he had 9 bottles of "10 yr" that were allocated for my town. They sold for $80/bottle, I'm assuming he meant 15 yr. He told me 1 bottle of 20 yr is scheduled to be delivered to a store here at 9 am Wed morning. I was planning on leaving town for work Tues but am considering staying another night to have a shot at the 20 yr. Rep said it would probably be priced around $150.

Anyone had the 20 yr? Is it good enough to pick up at ~$150?

I certainly think so. If you haven't had it, I think it is definitely worth trying. It's perhaps the smoothest drinking bourbon that I've ever had, as I think its finishing in port barrels really smoothes out the finish. Tough to beat a bottle of Angel's Envy for less than $10.
