Is everyone driving and texting? (1 Viewer)

Recently, I was holding a pint of IPA in one hand, texting with the other, and driving with my knee.

I made it safely to my destination, without incident.

No victim, no crime.
Congrats?

yea can we really call it the land of the free if you're not allowed to get hammered and get behind the wheel while surfing Gawker on your iPhone?

Some ##### in front of me today, stopped at a light, was texting, and her car started rolling back towards mine. I had to lay on the horn for her to look up and brake.
Sounds like you were right on her ###. Don't tailgate.
Plenty of room. She rolled quite a bit.

Also, stop trying to be the shticky contrarian in here. You're not good at it.

In my state you could be charged with a class 2 misdemeanor for an open container. It's possible you committed a similar criminal act in your state.

It might well be a statutory "crime," but it's not a real crime.

Maybe he's good at it.

Car basically disintegrated.
i've always thought those smart cars can't be much better than a motorcycle
No car is better than a motorcycle if you don't wear your seatbelt.
If she were wearing her seatbelt she'd be wherever what's left of the seat is. Not sure that's an improvement.

I'd wager it is an improvement.

Not very likely. The car came apart completely, there was no safe place in that crash. The cabin didn't maintain it's integrity.

Just got home after screaming at some young kid staring at his phone while driving. His was in front of me, swirving onto the warning strips, slamming his breaks unnecessarily while varying his speeds dramatically. He just put on a stupid ####-eating grin as I yelled when I drove past him. He threw his phone down, though. Punk.

I commute 100mi a day and I don't get people swerving into me so much, but it's definitely an epidemic at red lights. You can miss a light if you are way back in line because in SoCal most people don't honk unless they've been waiting for like 10 seconds. For some reason it happens way more on a the left arrow than a regular light.

The one I hate is the idiot who is looking up and down constantly. You know he's doing something on his phone. I had a guy do that in front of me on the freeway for about 15 solid minutes.

Honking is VERY effective here in MN. Nobody ever honks around here. Except me. 100% of the time, the honkee looks like someone just raped them with a broken bottle.

Here too. But if you are 10th in line at a left arrow, you need one of the first few cars to do it.

California drivers are weird. They drive crazy and are impatient and entitled, but they don't honk.

It's the same here. People look at me like I commited a social faux pas when I use my horn.

I don't pay attention to what people are doing inside their cars.

I do. See all sorts of interesting things.

One time I scoped the rearview at a stop light and saw a kid probably about 17 or 18, average looking bro and thought nothing of it. Look back again just as a blonde hottie picked her head up from the driver side with a smile. Way to go youngin.

Don't even bring up road head or someone will want to outlaw that too.

Was riding a citibike behind another citibiker here in NYC (bike-share). she had no helmet and was riding erratically- speed, and swerving. get to a place where it's safe to ride past her and she's ####### texting while riding the bike.

From the NY Daily News...

A New York City teacher and activist who was riding his bicycle cross country to raise money for affordable housing was struck and killed in Oklahoma by a driver who was on her cell phone.

Patrick Wanninkhof, 25, was a trip leader of a Bike & Build charity ride that started in Maine in June.

The squad was almost all the way through Oklahoma on a state highway in tiny Elk City when 34-year-old Sarah Morris slammed into Wanninkhof with her Chevy four-door sedan on Thursday morning. Wanninkhof flew 174 feet and died on impact, according to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. A second rider suffered leg injuries.

The driver told police that she was looking at her phone when she slammed into the cyclists.

Wanninkhof was a member of Teach For America and had most recently taught app development at Lehman College. He was originally from Florida, but had been living in New York City for at least three years, according to Justin Villlere, senior director of Bike and Build. He left his job at Lehman in the spring to prepare for the cross country ride.

Riders were expected to end in Santa Barbara, Calif. Wanninkhof and other riders had already made it through New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri.

Bike & Build released a statement offering support to its community.

“We are all shaken by this terrible news, and this will be a difficult time for everyone in our community,” the statement read. “We have solace in the strength of the Bike & Build community, which we will count on to support each other as we respond to this tragedy.”

Wanninkhof also played bass in the Janna Pelle band. They were set to play their next show at Pianos Bar on the Lower East Side on Aug. 8.

The driver has not been charged but the investigation is continuing.

I'm sure she'll get severly punished. A night in county + probation.

But if she had been drunk, she'd end up in prison.

car in front of me crossed the center line repeatedly and almost ditched off the side of the road.  I was on a 2 lane road and got around.....person was using both hands on steering wheel and phone.

It's a ####### disaster Texting and Driving.

Just an absolute ####### disaster down here in South Florida. I see people swerving every day while they just stare at their ####### phones and not paying any attention to the road.

I am blown away.

Had a car coming at me the other day that just kept drifting further and further into my lane. I was halfway off the road and just getting ready to lay on my horn when the guy looks up from his phone and just kinda laffs/waves as he whips back into his lane. Hilarious.

Need equal punishment for equal crimes.   DUI here is 1 to 364 days in jail, at least 15 days of electronic home monitoring or 90 days in a 24/7 Sobriety Program, $550 to $5,200 in fines and fees and a 90-day license suspension.  Texting while driving here is $124 ticket.

about a month ago, kid in one of those Subaru crossover badass pretend to be offroad hatchbacks...swerves aggressively in behind me in a space not really big enough.   I see him in my rear view starting to drift into the center median, head down looking at something I assumed was his phone.   He looks up, swerves a little too aggressively out of the edge of median, and he's ####ed.   Everyone else sees it coming, and they all slow down a little.  He swerves hard right, hard left, hard right, shoots off the right side and slams into the sound wall the lines the divided highway from the residential area.

Ouch, cat, Sheboygan.

This happened to a friend of mine.  He was behind a teen-age girl at a light.  He could tell she was on her phone because he could see it in the side mirror.  He honked, she hit the gas without looking up, and smashed the car in front of her.
