\\m// Official Dealer's Choice Music Mixtape Draft (1 Viewer)

It always gives me chills (not good ones) knowing that the guy who wrote and performed the incredible keyboard part at the end of this song is living today in an insane asylum in northern California after chopping off his mother's head. Rumor has it that late at night he sits down at the piano sometimes and plays this tune ever so softly...
Yikes. That instrumental is my favorite part of the song.
Wiki page for what it may be worth.

Jim Gordon Music career[edit]Gordon began his career in 1963, at age seventeen, backing The Everly Brothers, and went on to become one of the most sought-after recording session drummers in Los Angeles. The protégé of studio drummer Hal Blaine, Gordon performed on many notable recordings in the 1960s, including Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys (1966), Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers byGene Clark (1967), The Notorious Byrd Brothers by The Byrds (1968) and the hit "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams (1968). At the height of his career Gordon was reportedly so busy as astudio musician that he would fly back to Los Angeles from Las Vegas every day to do two or three recording sessions, and then return in time to play the evening show at Caesars Palace.

In 1969 and 1970, Gordon toured as part of the backing band for the group Delaney & Bonnie, which at the time included Eric Clapton. Clapton subsequently took over the group's rhythm section — Gordon, bassist Carl Radle and keyboardist-singer-songwriter Bobby Whitlock. They formed a new band that was later called Derek and the Dominos. The band's first studio work was as the house band for George Harrison's first solo album, the three-disc set All Things Must Pass. Gordon then played on Derek and the Dominos' 1970 double album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, contributing, in addition to his drumming, the elegiac piano coda for the title track, "Layla," co-written by Gordon and Clapton. It was later revealed by Graham Nash the coda credited to Gordon was actually written by Rita Coolidge.[3] He also played with the band on subsequent U.S. and UK tours. The group split in spring 1971 before they finished recording their second album.

In 1970, Gordon was part of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and played on Dave Mason's album Alone Together. In 1971, he toured with Traffic and appeared on two of their albums, including The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. That same year he played on Harry Nilsson's Nilsson Schmilsson album, contributing the drum solo to the track "Jump into the Fire". In 1972, Gordon was part of Frank Zappa's 20-piece "Grand Wazoo" big band tour, and the subsequent 10-piece "Petit Wazoo" band. Perhaps his best-known recording with Zappa is the title track of the 1974 album Apostrophe ('), a jam with Zappa and Tony Duran on guitar and Jack Bruce on bass guitar, for which both Bruce and Gordon received a writing credit. Also in 1974, Gordon played on the majority of tracks on Steely Dan's album Pretzel Logic, including the single "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". He again worked with Chris Hillman of the Byrds as the drummer in the Souther–Hillman–Furay Band from 1973 to 1975. He also played drums on three tracks on Alice Cooper's 1976 album, Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. Gordon was the drummer on the Incredible Bongo Band's Bongo Rock album, released in 1972, and his drum break on the LP's version of "Apache" has been frequently sampled by rap music artists.[4]

Imprisonment[edit]Gordon developed schizophrenia and began to hear voices, including those of his mother, which forced him to starve himself and prevented him from sleeping, relaxing or playing drums.[5] In 1983 he attacked his mother with a hammer before fatally stabbing her.[4][6][7] Though at trial the court accepted that Gordon had acute schizophrenia he was not allowed to use an insanity defense because of changes to California law due to the Insanity Defense Reform Act.[5] On 10 July 1984 Gordon was sentenced to 16 years to life in prison.[8] According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's website (http://www.cdcr.ca.gov), as of October 2013, James Beck Gordon, prisoner #C89262, age 67, admission date 13 July 1984, is still serving his sentence at the California Medical Facility, a specialist medical and psychiatric prison in Vacaville, California.

Might as well do this now:

4.22 The Bangles "Manic Monday (2012 Acoustic Version)" Prince-related song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZD-u_MnU3w

Always one of my favorites. This is a sweet unplugged version. And Susanna Hoffs is still hot after all these years.

Mommy
Can't see a category this fits. Maybe blasphemous to some but...I've suggested this for covers better than originals.

Oh my.

I had a religious experience (in my pants) when I watched it, so there's always that.

4.14 Bob Dylan – “Hurricane” (athletes)

Tougher category than I thought. The selection is a bit more obvious than I'd like, but a gem. No original clip available on YouTube. <_<

shazaaaam! Nice pick.

Guess what? I was snowed in last week, and I caught a segment of a show called The Talk, and it was celebrating Florence Henderson's 80th birthday. It was good. It started out with her coming on the set first. Here is a clip of when they asked her about Robert Reed. About five minutes later, Greg, Peter, Bobby, and Cindy came out. I'm going to call them by their character names since it's easier. Jan and Alice skyped in. Marcia wasn't anywhere to be found, and The Talk ladies asked them about her, and Greg made what sounded like an excuse about her being busy. Anyway, it was good. Greg talked about how excited he was to find out he would be working with Florence, and he thought she was so hot. Bobby said he and Cindy were the first to hook up on the show, and it was in Tigers dog house. He said they just kissed, and when he started noticing how hot Marsha was he dumped Cindy. Bobby said that outside of their immediate families, they consider each other the closest people in their lives, and the others agreed. Peter talked about how their real mothers didn't come on the set, and so Florence not only played their show mother, but had to be their mother on the set. He said he got into trouble a lot on the set, and Florence would give him a look, and reign him in. They all said she taught them how to be professional. Bobby said when they were doing that variety show, he really wasn't in to it, and he just didn't care. He said Florence approached him in the parking lot, and told him that they were there to do a job and be professional, and if his heart wasn't in it, then he shouldn't be either. He said he never forgot that. That is all I can remember other than them talking about what each was doing now. One more thing, on the talk show they put up this huge poster of Marcia, and they took turns trying to hit her in the nose with a football. Incase anyone is wondering, zam is my Brady Bunch pal.

4xx "A Quick One, While He's Away" - The Who - Multiple Movements

The song has six distinct movements. The brief harmonised a cappella intro is titled "Her Man's Gone". The "Crying Town" section is sung by Roger Daltrey in an atypical low register. Daltrey also sings "We Have a Remedy" in his more usual voice. John Entwistle plays "Ivor the Engine Driver" in that section. Then comes "Soon Be Home", another harmonised section. Finally, "You Are Forgiven" is sung by Pete Townshend — his only lead vocal on the album (except, on most versions of the album, a small part of "Heat Wave") The Who wanted cellos at the final "mini"-movement, "You Are Forgiven", but producer and manager Kit Lambert could not afford it so they ended up saying "Cello, cello, cello".

I was hoping this was building up to a revelation that Florence Henderson had a conjugal visit with Rubin Carter in 1976

Coming to you from Copenhagen...

4.21 - Lust - The Raveonettes (Scandinavian)
Never heard of them. From wiki:

The Raveonettes are a Danish indie rock[1] duo, consisting of Sune Rose Wagner (born 1973, Sønderborg, Denmark) on guitar, instruments, and vocals, and Sharin Foo (born 22 November 1973, Emmelev, Denmark) on bass, guitar and vocals. Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers[2] coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise.[3] Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of '50s and '60s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats, and often dark lyrical content (e.g., crime, drugs, murder, suicide, love, lust, and betrayal), similar to another of the band's influences, The Velvet Underground.
Sounds like a duo after my heart. I've been listening for an hour or so. Love the reverb. Thanks, simey.

I have to be a little inventive with some of these categories.

Bluish grass (Gay is OK)

Was always going to be difficult to find Scandanavian Bluegrass, gay or not. Thankfully Avicii comes to the rescue.

At least this was easier than finding a Scandanavian Wu Tang Club member or a Rush song.

3.17 - Avicii - Hey Brother - 4.14

Hey Brother" is a dance song by Swedish DJ and producer Avicii from his debut studio album, True (2013). It features uncredited vocals from American bluegrass singer Dan Tyminski, and was written by Avicii, Ash Pournouri, Salem Al Fakir and Vincent Pontare. The song was solicited to Australian radio on 9 October 2013 as a promotional single from True.[2][3] It was released as the album's third single on 28 October 2013 in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.[4]

Best part of Rushmore. Wound up getting so far into the Who after that movie, even though I was already a fan.

So just to confirm re: the deep tracks - album hit #1 on the US Billboard 200, but the song cannot have individually charted on any chart anywhere in the world?

Everybody can make any outstanding picks up to 3.xx today.

We'll do round 4 on Sunday and round 5 on Monday. Draft order and clock will resume Tuesday morning unless we decide to stick with one pick per day.

Please help keep the Google Sheet up to date.
Personally, I like this method best and would vote to continue as opposed to a snake draft.

That's right. Makes picking a song from the last 10 years almost impossible with digital downloads counting towards the chart.

If it reached number 86 on the Luxembourg Hot 100, then not eligible.

What is the best way to check whether the song charted? Does Allmusic have this detail?

For most modern artists, Wiki does a pretty good job under an artists discography.

Also this website is reasonably ok post 2000 http://acharts.us/

If there is nothing in either of these places, post the pick and let someone else prove otherwise.

I guarantee that I won't look it up to prove you right or wrong. Let the category nominator do that if they choose.

It's got a pretty terrible interface, but this is the website I found on google to aid my pick for the category: http://acharts.us/. Found out 2 singles from Blunderbuss charted on the Portugese and Canadian charts.

lol - Zam's call but gotta be Billboard (100 ...200?) for consistency. So what's the deal Zam?

4th rounder

OK as far as I know this is the last song I have that qualifies and I actually like, so if I got scooped on it I'd probably end up punting this one. Originally written for the D.O.A. Apallonia 6. It is a pretty excellent little Prince tune. As a bonus, the only version on spotify is ten minutes long.

Sheila E - The Glamorous Life (Prince related)

http://bit.ly/1fs20Xw

Could fit a few different categories but going with acoustic. Listened to this tune several times the last few days. Love how these drafts reintroduce me to stuff I've lost touch with.
