One last time on the deep tracks...

#1 album on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 chart

Song cannot have hit ANY chart in ANY country, so looking for an unreleased song off said album, or if it was released as a single, never charted anywhere

So how do we efficiently search this? Researching every country from the link posted earlier cannot be the way to go.

I spent like 15 minutes on that site and totally gave up. I don't even understand what I'm looking at. It's like a Geocities site from 1998.

I got that. Where do you look to see if the song/single chosen charted anywhere, at any level? I am looking for sites - found this one that goes to 100 and looks to cover the US and UK but don't see other countries.

Example 1969

http://www.musicvf.com/songs.php?page=year&year=1969&tab=songchartstab&sort=pointsup&filter=all

...guess "Sugar, Sugar is out ...such a good album too

No #### - what a cluster.

I knew Glen Hansard would be part of my draft I just wasn’t sure which song for which category. I finally decided acoustic, which I guess is kind of like shooting fish in a barrel. I couldn’t decide what song, or which of the zillion youtube clips, but decided to go with the clip from the first time I heard Hansard and fell in awe with his raw emotions.

3.09 - Say it to Me Now - Glen Hansard (Accoustic)

FWIW, when I saw Swell Season in 2009 it was the big concert I saw in the last 15 years or so. Whether its solo, with the Frames, or of course optimally with Marketa Hansard can do no wrong.
Ok... some clarification- I thought the category was "Instrumental", not "accoustic"... ie: no sanging.

no?

Love the song, though... and the album/movie (thanks K4!) Really wish I went around the corner from my pad to see the play while it was still work-shopping before going to bway.

Speaking of bondage...

3:xx- Prime Mover- The Leather Nun (Scandinavian).

Post-punk/metal/cheese band from Sweden. Other hits were "Jesus came Driving Along", "Desolation Avenue" and "Pink House", which lambasted Mellencamp's "Pink Houses". They were pretty garish, cheesey stylistically (fashion andmusic) and their lyrics could easily go into our "worst" category.., but this song grabbed me by the nads the first time I heard it and never let go. I thought about going with a recent Swedish find here that has been on constant rotation for me lately, but Prime Mover is an all-timer for me so I thought I'd share.

I bought this album just from the combo of name and album cover... I miss those days of pouring through record bins (my go to store was Village Music in Mill Valley... a former HS-mate of mine, and daughter of the mandoloinist I would've picked had there been a cat, is makng a documentary about this amazing place that every touring musician visited when the gigged SF)

It's a cluster #### no doubt, but I think once you figure it out it's probably the easiest way to figure things out if the album you're considering is less than 10 years old.

So on the http://acharts.us/ home page there's a little search bar on the right, write in the name of the album there and click go. Then click on the album, and when you scroll down it shows all the songs by that artist that have been on the charts over the last ~10 years.

I knew you were going to take them as your female blues pick. Wasn't sure which song though.
Gotta represent the 'nati.
This is the first one in the Cat that speaka my language... really not liking the other ones at all.
Is that really a Blues tune?
I think it's a rock song.

Bonzai is judge and jury for that pick... so I'm in.

Zam - I think I am just going to verify tracks that were not even released as singles (released singles shown on each album wiki page).

It's a great song, but it's hardly the blues. Which may be a clue to why you like it better than the others. Except the weak Dylan cover the rest are pretty straightforward blues.

im thinking kashmir is not what was intended as a deep cut as its the most played and well known tune off that album

why would you pick that tune off that album as a deep cut over say night flight or the rover

There are separate categories for post-1990 acoustic songs and post-1990 instrumental.

ah- thanks. I'm supposed to read the category list, or something... right?

Deep Track off a #1 Album

Album: Physical Graffiti - Led Zepplin

4.16 Kashmir - Led Zepplin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQH3LtNePgI

#1 album for a month in the Spring of '75

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_200_number-one_albums_of_1975

Looks like "Trampled Under Foot/Black Country Woman" were the only singles released from the album.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Graffiti
Good pick. See - that wasn't so tough, eh?
This is where digital downloads screw everything up.

Wiki says:

Peak position
UK Singles Chart[26] 80
Swiss Singles Chart[27] 64
US Billboard Hot Digital Songs Chart[28] 42
US Billboard Hot Digital Tracks Chart[29] 49
Canadian Billboard Hot Digital Singles Chart[30] 33
Putting Kashmir into the acharts.us search engine comes up with:

Song Performance:
icon-down.gif
Swiss Singles Top 75 47/2007 64 64 1 3 - 51/2007 Swiss Singles Top 75 - Chart Trajectory: week: 1 2 3 position: 64 65 98 47/2007 64 64 1 3 51/2007

I'm not really bothered about the Top 200 deep cut category.

As far as I can see only 1 Scandanavian album has ever reached number 1 and the deep cuts on that are all pretty terrible.

Digital Downloads have made this harder to categorize.

Songs aren't released as singles, but can still chart see Kashmir as an example, especially for BIG artists when they released their material on itunes for the 1st time.

I am right in seeing these as digital downloads in November and December of 2007 - for a 1975 release song? I am good with whatever the ruling is and dive back in if need be - Zam just give us a signal.

It's not my category but I don't think the modern distribution model of digital albums should redefine the meaning of singles and deep tracks.

My Category choice:

A Song by a Scandanavian Artist/Band that isn't Abba, Ace of Base or Roxette. Scandanavia is defined as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden
I saw a local production of the musical version of Spamalot tonight and the opening number reminded me a of this draft and my expectations. In the opening a narrator gives a background of Kind Arthur and ends with "Arthur King of the Britons, for this was England!" and then this is the first song they perform

So just to confirm re: the deep tracks - album hit #1 on the US Billboard 200, but the song cannot have individually charted on any chart anywhere in the world?
That's right. Makes picking a song from the last 10 years almost impossible with digital downloads counting towards the chart. If it reached number 86 on the Luxembourg Hot 100, then not eligible.
What is the best way to check whether the song charted? Does Allmusic have this detail?
For most modern artists, Wiki does a pretty good job under an artists discography. Also this website is reasonably ok post 2000 http://acharts.us/

If there is nothing in either of these places, post the pick and let someone else prove otherwise.I guarantee that I won't look it up to prove you right or wrong. Let the category nominator do that if they choose.

My issue with Kashmir isn't that it charted. It's that it isn't a deep cut. In contrast to "Red Hill Mining Town" - never performed live - it was a staple of every LZ performance from '75 onward.

Wiki:

All four members of Led Zeppelin have agreed that "Kashmir" is one of their best musical achievements.[12] John Paul Jones suggested that it showcases all of the elements that made up the Led Zeppelin sound.[2] Plant has stated that "Kashmir" is the "definitive Led Zeppelin song",[13] and that it "was one of my favourite [Led] Zeppelin tracks because it possessed all the latent energy and power that wasn't heavy metal. It was something else. It was the pride of Led Zeppelin."[7] During a television interview in January 2008, he also named "Kashmir" as his first choice of all Led Zeppelin songs that he would perform, commenting "I'm most proud of that one".[14] Page has indicated he thinks that the song is one of the band's best compositions.[15]
It's the best known track from Physical Graffiti. It wasn't a hit single but they weren't a pop band; they defined AOR and often refused to release popular songs as singles. This just doesn't pass the smell test as a deep cut.

Anyway, not my pick or my category - that's just like, my opinion, man. JZilla defined the cat as whether it charted. This fits the definition.

NYC theme lasted about four hours. It was a run.

4.19 - 1971 - Maggie May

This was actually released as a B-side to Reason to Believe. The song was Stewart's first substantial hit as a solo performer and launched his solo career (both the album and single went to #1).

I thought about a lot of different songs and albums from 1971 that meant a lot to me later. But at the time Every Picture Tells a Story was the one that wore out the eight-track player. Not sure how I went from there to prog - oh, wait, bong hits - but I still smile every time I hear this song. It was the year before my parents divorce, and probably the last summer I had not a care in the world.

Don't blame me, I just want to hear about animals!

I'm not sure where all the confusion lies in this category though. It's pretty cut and dry. Kashmir seems like maybe an "ironic" deep cut selection. Nice work outsnobbing the field this round.

Got my Z's mixed up. Sorry, GB.
