Subject to tentative approval from Simey....

5.20 - Alabama Shakes - "I Ain't the Same" (Female Blues 03-14)
I'm good with it. The AS weave a lot of blues into their music, and Brittany can really let loose in their live shows.
Agree here, but two others in this category... I'm not hearing anything related to blues. I cheated on the gayfolk thing so I'm not criticizing, just commenting.

Female Blues

4.20 (snicker) - Eilen Jewel - Queen of the Minor Key
She was great last year at the Merlefest. I think this song is more on her Rockabilly side, but I know she has blues infused songs.

If the Alabama Shakes qualify then this is a no-brainer in the blues chick category.

Bettye Lavette -- I Still Want to Be Your Baby (Take Me Like I Am)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqWMNFQnfN0

Bettye doing an Eddie Hinton song accompanied by the Drive-by Truckers at Muscle Shoals. The album was nominated for Grammy in the Blues category. As an album, I prefer I've Got My Own Hell To Raise, but the genre issues are a little tougher there.

She's not exactly obscure. But I think you could place them in either queer folk or blues.

Here's the lead to a story from last year:

You know that feeling you have when your child or young family member is on stage for the first time?

That's how I felt about 24-year-old Brittany Howard Sunday night when she performed Levon Helm's "The Weight" with world-acclaimed legends like Elton John and Mavis Staples at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. There she was, Alabama's pride and joy – curls pressed out and in her Sunday best for the big show – with the big boys.

As an Alabamian, I couldn't have been more proud.

You see, this young frontwoman for Athens' rockabilly soul band Alabama Shakes is modern-day Alabama, through and through. Every way you cut it, she embodies everything that is in our future.

Brittany is at once black, white and other; maybe gay, maybe straight; pretty thick, kinda country and not at all up on the latest fashions (or, unbeknownst to us, maybe, ahead of them).

The Timberlakes and Rihannas of the world may have the glam but our Brittany is the real deal.

I know Bonzai's pick isn't blues flavored, but he must think there is something there. He didn't ask me. If I were judging the category his would be at the bottom (sorry Bonz) right now. If you are referring to Tim's as the other, Susan Tedeschi is a blues singer, and I can hear some blues in Don't Think Twice, It's Alright.

We're doing unifying themes? ####.

OK, our theme is has NYC ties.
Wait, when did this happen?
Optional? Some have been doing it. I thought NYC would be a natural for our team as we've lived here 28 & 15 years. Apparently I was mistaken.
Did I miss something? Nyc? Ok... I'm game. But you have to do Rush.
I got Rush. And 3 movements, which will surely be prog rock. Anything else you need the dinosaur to handle for the team?

#### trying to make this thematic - it's convoluted enough.
Blah blah blah

blah blah blah

blah blah blah
You still doing voice recognition on your mobile? Did you realize this was a post...because it kind of reads like a strategy PM.

ETA: blah blah blah
huh?
I said make your fifth round pick, slacker.

I've seen Derek a dozen times and half of them with Susan. I'm pretty sure neither of them would call that a blues song, or even a blues related song. She's been covering it forever and calls it a folk song live. I don't know what you're hearing, but it's cool. That's why I asked early if a blues singer was good enough.

Hope everything is ok, usual.

KP, are you changing categories?
didn't think there was a ruling. i guesd you guys can give your input. will post my ideas and go from there:

1. origins of metal: non Sabbath songs pre-1972 that shaped the metal genre/sound.

2. "ebony and ivory": songs from a band that have both white and black members (no, not striped penises)

They are using a Hammond b3 blues organ in the song + Susan's bluesy voice, and to me that is elements of the blues. I said a song doesn't have to be pure blues, but it needs to have elements of the blues in it. That doesn't mean it would score high if I were judging the category, but I think it's a nice rendition of the Dylan tune, and it suits me just fine as folk blues or blues folk.

Yessir. This one is sort of a make up for cheating on your category. You mentioned an interest in it as it is a somewhat fresh discovery. Same here. My spotify is loaded with bands I'd never heard of a decade ago, about 3/4s gayfolkish.

Baby/Babe Title category

This is a gayfolk superband.

5.18 Monsters of Folk - Baby Boomer

No standup bass, banjo or fiddle. Still cheating, but I know it's the right idea. I'll get those instruments eventually...

Well fine. There's just so many spot on options available, I guess it is bugging me a little. I won't push the category. I'll rep the blues at their purest and best with my pick tomorrow.

I always considered "Don't Think Twice" to be a blues song done folk style by Dylan.

Love Admiral Halsey- would have been my pick if not for my acoustic limitation.

And Bettye Lavette is incredible.

Her singing it w/ the ABB.
I saw her sing it with Government Mule too.

eta: seeing Derek a dozen times means lots of ABB. Probably the band that answers KP's question about personal influence.

I'm pretty sure you didn't say that.

5.XX- Ederlezi (Time of the Gypsies)- 80's movie song

I remember seeing this in theaters and completely falling for the movie with this scene and song. I haven't seen it since and hope that it would hold up... still a fan of the music. Felt like going in a non-US/ John Hughes direction here.. or even indie 80s, as tempting as a handful were that popped into my noggin. Like most of you, the 80s were hugely formative and like most of you I was big music nerd... this one feels off that path, so I'm happy to pick it.

eta: some nsfw boobs in this.

KP Go ahead & pick.

Usual hope everything turns out OK in the real world

I'm going to put 80s soundtracks on hold for now. There have been two picked so far. We can either:

1. Keep the original category

2. Let Karma Police choose a new one

3. Allow both categories to stand and allow a third mulligan

you be da law.

I posted my ideas of categories if you want to scratch usual's. will post 5 picks tonight from home so hopefully can get some YouTube links.

KP - you're entitled to a category if you're part of the draft. My only input is that I'm personally finding the more open categories more fun to draft from.

I was reposting the options about how to handle the additional category since it kind of got lost on the previous page.

in the end, I agree on generalness. plus I forgot that I would have to make the last selection.

official category change:

draft any song from the album that has most influenced your musical taste.

I guess that means I need to update my 2.16 pick as I drafted a 80s movie soundtrack?

Ok, I am the first one to admit that taking a song from a concert movie is a big time cop-out. However, Stop Making Sense was a pivotal movie for me. The first time I watched Stop Making Sense, it was a life moment that sticks with me (ok I was high). They talk about heroin addicts chasing that first high. Well, I have spent my life chasing that perfection of that moment watching and listening to and being changed by that concert movie. I know the birth of children or falling in love or climbing mountains (literal and figurative) should surpass my late teen self-watching Stop Making Sense, but apparently nothing can.

When you watch Stop Making Sense you see not only the skill, but the joy they had in these perfect moments. I have always wished there was a steady shot available of each person on stage without a cut. Anyway, the last song fit the category and made the scene that much better or whatever Usuals criteria was. J

2.16 "Crosseyed and Painless” – Talking Headshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyDb4szpWmc (80s movie soundtrack)

I don't want a gypsy curse placed on the house of my father so we're going with option #3. 80s movies soundtracks and song from an album that influenced you are both official categories.

23 categories, 20 song mixes, 3 mulligans

Deep Track off a #1 Album

Album: Physical Graffiti - Led Zepplin

4.16 Kashmir - Led Zepplin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQH3LtNePgI

#1 album for a month in the Spring of '75

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_200_number-one_albums_of_1975

Looks like "Trampled Under Foot/Black Country Woman" were the only singles released from the album.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Graffiti
Replacing the above pick - going a different category - Bluegrass/Folk.

Going full folk - not much on the bluegrass.

4.16 Old Man - Neil Young

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_LZ8LKM_vs&list=RDs_LZ8LKM_vs

Could qualify for chill bumps song for me too.

This is a story of a boy from Hollywood who never dreamed the girl he'd want most was down here...

It's the story of a girl from the Valley who never dreamed she'd ever be seen with a boy from over here...

Julie's cool, Randy's hot, She's from the Valley, He's not

Valley Girl

5.xx "A Million Miles Away" - The Plimsouls

It's the song that's playing when they first kiss

It's no gypsie love song, but- Love it. Some great songs in this one.

Pretty surprised to see folks saying HB aren't based in the blues. Almost everything I've read about them references the blues. But simey knows her blues, so if she doesn't like it I'll throw it back.

Would their cover of Junior Kimbrough's Done Got Old work?

Funny - it was going to be this or Lunatic Fringe for me. I've worn the Valley Girl soundtrack to death, so went with Red Rider.
