MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (20 Viewers)

There's nothing wrong with not getting your list the exact way you want it, but think about this.... right now, I have ONE list in chronological order, and TWO lists "some other way" . I bet if nothing was said about those in advance, and I started posting the countdown, no one could figure out which artist it is on those three lists, because we all have different music tastes.

Last round, I didn't have much time to make my list. I have two in the 20's that would be in top 10 now. So what? Who cares? There are too may artists to remember anyone's order in the long run.

I never have time to do many writeups and I suck at writing anyways. So what! I do greatly appreciate all of you with 100x more music knowledge than I have.

If you don't have enough time. So what! Post your 31 songs. We aren't going to enjoy your list any less. I just want to hear a lot of new, good music. That's the goal here.

I'm not ranting on anyone in particular. here, and I get that we all would like to have our lists as perfect as possible, but just posting them is more important IMO.

OK, because I know he can take it, I would love to hear the Doobie Brothers. Heck, just take there top 40 songs, throw them in a randomizer and post the Top 31 that come out. I just want to doobie to them LOL.

Haha, that just gave me an idea... you give me your top 31 and I randomize all your 1-31 lists and I post that way.
Great post. I agree I think people put too much pressure on themselves to provide big write-ups, try to keep up with the playlists, and get the rankings right. We are all here for the music, bad puns, and good company with fellow music :nerd: s.

Journey is in "ranked" order, but even when I do them this way it's more like tiers vs. actual correct rankings. That is impossible.
Lord Huron is in "other" because I thought spreading out the albums would be better, otherwise my top 15 probably would have been 11 or 12 from the main two albums.
I'm guilty of this and it's 100% a me problem. When I'm engaged and keeping pace I both enjoy the music / banter and litter my library with new music. When I'm not I get easily distracted while spinning, smash less hearts, and eventually lose interest.

The only part of my list I obsess over is the beginning of it - need the attention grabber. I also put singles most people have heard before at the top. If I have a lesser known that's also a favorite then the best it can be ranked is about #3. I over analyze the rest of it, trying to ensure there aren't runs of ballads / bangers / or songs from the same album when no one will notice, but I've done a better job the last two times limiting that to only about a week. I justify it because I've weeded out a couple needing pulled and add in others I didn't seriously think about until a 5th or 6th listen.
Are we getting a Ringo list?

I know these (and I mostly know the last three Swift songs because of Ryan Adams covering that album).

Other than the 10-15 minute drive to school with my stepson everyday about 6-8 years ago, I have not listened to pop radio in more than 30 years, as I generally dislike what's considered pop music now. I listen to a LOT of new music, just not pop.

As I said the last three Swift songs I first discovered on Ryan Adams cover of her 1989 album - although I do like her now and do listen to her from time to time.

I'm not a Perry fan at all - I know the original of "I kissed a girl" much better and the other songs were ubiquitous and performed at the Super Bowl (which I watch).

  • 3 Pearl Jam (Pearl Jam, 2006)
  • 2 Yield (Pearl Jam, 1998)

I have listened to the Teenage Dream more than I'd like to admit. Same with 1989 and a couple Kesha and Lady Gaga albums.

List (all 32 tracks, you'll see) Submitted.

Last Five Out:
Rain
"Rain" was in there and plausibly should still be. But at the end, I made the executive decision to limit songs from their first album to 6. Which, to be fair, is 2 more than any other album (see also below). So "Rain" can also stand in for all the songs off "Candlebox" that didn't make it.

Blinders
This one was also in heavy consideration. Obviously, at this current point, it just wasn't quite enough. It's a song about personal growth, about being overly focused on one path and (thanks to metaphorically having blinders on) not seeing other, possibly more 'risky', paths.

Surrendering
It was near a coin flip between this and another song from Into the Sun. A mellow and comforting song, about loneliness and self-isolation. But also finding someone worthy of, well, surrendering to, of confiding in.

Featherweight
"Featherweight" never appeared on an album, being only released as a B-side single.

The Bridge
Hello. I've waited here for you. Okay, the similarities stop after a few seconds, with Candlebox going their own way. But it's still a taste of their (later) influences and style.

--
Breakdown of 31 songs:
Candlebox - 6
Lucy - 4
Happy Pills - 4
Into the Sun - 3
Love Stories & Other Musings - 2
Disappearing In Airports - 4 (Includes one song from Disappearing Live)
Wolves - 3
A Little Longer Goodbye - 3 (Two of them also on The Long Goodbye)
Misc - 2

Includes one cover. Though I don't know what chance there is of having heard the original. Or any of the other 13 versions.
Saw Candlebox a few years back at a casino and Kevin Martin's voice still sounds great.

I admit I have not. I have it but just have not had the time to listen to it more than one time. And I really haven't listened to Gigaton a lot either. Those two albums may havve gotten shorted in my ranking.
I thought Gigaton was mostly forgettable, but as a whole I thought Dark Matter was their best effort this century. I'm not sure any single track would crack my top 31, while others from this century would, but I strongly recommend spinning that black circle.

39. Man of the Hour (Pearl Jam, "Big Fish: Music from the Motion Picture," 2003)
Speaking of, great last 10 out contribution. Also wouldn't crack mine, but it's due to the quality of the catalog, only so much space.

36. I Got ID (Pearl Jam, "Merkin Ball," 1995)
But, this...

33. Footsteps (Pearl Jam, "Lost Dogs," 2003)
...this...

32. Porch (Pearl Jam, "Ten," 1991)
...and this. Gonna need you to speed test this

I think I would have a couple from No Code in my top 10.
This was the album I ended up loving more later in life when I got back into PJ in the 00s. When it came out, Who You Are was the first song I remember hearing and I didn't like it at all. Barely touched the album - some because of that and more because I was getting into Radiohead and others way more. It would be my 2nd favorite album of their behind Vs. now.

First 5 out for Eddie Vedder:

36. I Got ID (Pearl Jam, "Merkin Ball," 1995)

"I Got Id" (sometimes referred to as "I Got ****") is a song by Pearl Jam, written by lead vocalist Eddie Vedder. It was released in 1995 as part of the Merkin Ball EP, a companion to Neil Young’s Mirror Ball album, which Pearl Jam collaborated on. "I Got Id" is an emotional and introspective song, characterized by Eddie's vulnerable lyrics and the band’s raw, powerful instrumentation.

"I Got Id" was written during the sessions for Neil Young’s Mirror Ball album, which featured Pearl Jam as the backing band. This collaboration stemmed from mutual respect between the artists. After completing the recording of Mirror Ball, Eddie wrote "I Got Id" and another song, "Long Road", which were released together on the Merkin Ball EP. Neil Young contributed lead guitar on "I Got Id", adding a distinctive texture to the song with his characteristic sound.

The song is notable for its blend of Neil Young's influence and Pearl Jam's signature grunge style. It reflects both Eddie's introspective lyricism and Young’s raw, organic approach to rock music.
To the surprise of no one, this would make my top 31 Pearl Jam songs, maybe even top 10.

And Porch not making the top 31 is :jawdrop:

And Porch not making the top 31 is :jawdrop:

Well, Porch was in my top 32.

Seriously, I could have at least 50 songs in my top 31, especially given that this is an Eddie list, which goes beyond just Pearl Jam.

I changed my list daily over the past couple of weeks. At times most of the songs I have in my first 10 out were in my top 31.

Breakdown of my Triumph top 31:

Albums:
Triumph (aka In the Beginning) (1976): 1
Rock & Roll Machine (1977): 3*
Just a Game (1979): 5
Progressions of Power (1980): 5
Allied Forces (1981): 4
Never Surrender (1982/83): 5
Thunder Seven (1984): 3
Stages (1985): 1
The Sport of Kings (1986): 3
Surveillance (1987): 1
Edge of Excess (1992/93): 0

* - The American/International version of Rock & Roll Machine (1978) includes all four of my selections from the first two albums.

Note: Progressions of Power and Never Surrender were more represented than I would have expected going in, and Allied Forces and Thunder Seven were less represented than I was expecting.

Writers:

Emmett/Levine/Moore: 19
Emmett: 3
Moore: 3
Emmett/Levine/Moore/someone else: 3
Emmett/Levine: 1
Emmett/others: 1
Cover: 1

Note: This reflects that starting with Progressions of Power in 1980, the three members agreed to share songwriting credits on almost all songs regardless of who did what. Generally whoever sings lead on a song did the most work as far as writing it.

Lead vocals:

Rik Emmett: 15
Gil Moore: 15
Shared: 1

Note: This worked out nicely (and was not deliberate). The bottom half of the list is Moore-heavy and the top half is Emmett-heavy.

At #31, one of Triumph's most melodic songs, which appeared on an album not known for its melodies.

It wasn't a joke, necessarily - she's a huge Beatles fan and mentioned throwing together a Ringo list for Round 2, but did not get around to it.

Who was going to do that?
I thought you threw a line like that out that maybe you would put a quick Ringo list together in one of the lead ups of a prior MAD Artists round. Maybe I'm misremembering.

Oh, OK. I wasn't sure if you were talking about me, because I didn't see my name in there at all. I have a vague recollection of joking about something like that, but I actually already did a Ringo countdown as part of my Beatles' solo works countdown thread, so I wouldn't have seriously considered doing that. Or I could do it really easily and just put the same songs and write-ups in!

I hope you do this. Ringo would be a great addition to the 31 playlists.

Hmmm, he's done one LP and five (5!) EPs since I did that list, so I'd need to do a little listening. I'll see if I can get it done by Sunday. but I'm not hopeful. If not, I'll join the next one.
Translation: I’d like to do this but it don’t come easy.

Hmmm, he's done one LP and five (5!) EPs since I did that list, so I'd need to do a little listening. I'll see if I can get it done by Sunday. but I'm not hopeful. If not, I'll join the next one.
that would be awesome. Since no one reads your posts, I mean I didn't follow that thread, if you can't add the new stuff, the old 1-31 would be just fine

We're behind on Jeopardy, so this is from a few weeks ago, but I watched it tonight.

The category was lyrics of classic bands (you are given lyrics and have to name the band). The clue was a lyrical passage from LA Woman, including the title phrase.

Contestant 1 doesn't guess.
Contestant 2 doesn't guess.
Contestant 3: Who is Skid Row?

I wonder if they would have given credit for Billy Idol?

I guess you have to give it up to the contestant for knowing who Skid Row was - even more so if they meant the pre-Thin Lizzy Phil Lynott/Gary Moore band of the same name.

What band sang that?

I was kidding, but since you played it straight that is an interesting solo. I just listened to it. Faith No More did a cover of it once.

My sarcasm meter is a bit low this early - need more java. Yeah, FNM's cover is really good.

Dammit I count 11. But having heard a song doesn’t mean I know anything about the artist or production.

The Bee Gees

The Bee Gees had one of the more unusual and diverse paths to superstardom. Beginning their career in the 1950s, they essentially had three different careers on three different continents, each more successful than the preceding one. Born in the mid-to-late 1940s on the Isle of Man and emigrating to Manchester, England in the mid-1950s, brothers Barry, Robin, Maurice (twins with Robin) first honed their craft in Australia when the family moved there in 1958. Of note, youngest brother Andy would later have his own big-time success in the late ‘70s as a solo performer and Solid Gold host before tragically dying very young in the late 1980s.

In Australia, Barry/Robin/Maurice got their first big break by a promoter named Bill Goode and a local disc jockey named Bill Gates (not that one). They were asked to sing on local radio and, for the first time, became known as the BGs (reflecting Bill Gates, Barry Gibb and Bill Goode). Later, when the name stuck, it came simply to stand for the brothers Gibb.

After having some modest success in Australia, in January 1967, the Bee Gees worked their way back to England on a cruise ship, mainly performing Beatles tunes. In fact, around this time, Australian producer Robert Stigwood (who was also managing Cream at the time) discovered a tape of the boys and sent it to his colleague Brian Epstein (at the management firm NEMS). Upon their arrival back in England, the Bee Gees were signed to a contract by NEMS.

While in England, the band’s work largely centered on ballads laden with their signature three-part harmonies, string orchestras and vibrato vocals (notably Robin’s). Australians Colin Peterson (drums) and Vince Melouney (guitar) were added to the band, with Barry playing second guitar and Maurice on bass. They had several big hits (which I won’t name to avoid spoilers) in the mid-1960s, and while never really a serious competitor to the Beatles, they were well regarded with their intricate string-based, psychedelic sound compelling poetic vocals.

The band effectively broke up in 1969 after each of the brothers married, reforming a year or so later with a newish sound that dipped into both the progressive rock and singer-songwriter genres. After some modest success in the early ‘70s, the band moved to the U.S. (at Eric Clapton’s suggestion - perhaps another Cream connection from earlier) and started embracing the soul/R&B/disco trend that was emerging in the U.S. in the mid-‘70s. Their first big success in the U.S. came with the 1975 album Main Course – on which Barry began using his trademark falsetto – and it was off to the races from there with the behemoth Saturday Night Fever soundtrack a few years later in 1977.

Post-Saturday Night Fever, their success waned, in no small part to their connection with the Beatles and the ill-fated movie musical Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. While heavily promoted, the film flopped, as did their (and Peter Frampton’s) career for the most part. They did rebound and have a handful of big hits in the late 1970s and in the 1980s, but that was essentially it for them as a big-time band. Another associated movie flop came in 1983 with Staying Alive, the long-awaited follow-up to Saturday Night Fever. The fact that Sylvester Stallone’s brother Frank had more success with that soundtrack tells you all you need to know.

While the band’s success faded in the 1980s, Barry would remain a big-time songwriter for many other artists. Maurice (2003) and Robin (2012) are unfortunately long gone, but their legacy remains, with 120 million records sold worldwide and 30 top 40 U.S. songs (9 of them hitting #1 in the States).

tl;dr version: They were a very complex underrated band that to this day are unfairly dismissed as disco mavens (not that there is anything wrong with that at all). Nine-year-old zamboni was all about Kiss when SNF came out (and would have been pounded into submission for liking the Bee Gees then), but grown-up zamboni really came to appreciate this criminally underrated band. My selections likely won’t do their full career justice, but will have several diverse selections throughout their primary 1966-1979 career. If you have any interest in learning more about them, I highly recommend the 2020 documentary The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.
