MAD - Artist - Round 4 - #1's have been posted (6 Viewers)

I’ve been working some on the TV Show Theme Song Theme that I was going for. A bit concerned that may be more fun for thinking about a ranking than actually listening to on a playlist, and not sure how I feel about that. Anyway, I guess can keep it in pencil. Do have some other ideas that thinking about if not feeling it by the time it comes around.
❤️ exciting and new

For the theme playlists, I was thinking about Hair Metal songs. Has that been done around here before? A quick FFA search didn't turn up any evidence.

Since it might be hard to sort out exactly which bands qualify as hair metal bands, I'd propose to say they are eligible if they are played on the SiriusXM Hair Nation channel.

Yeah, that is why not sure works as well on a playlist, as was starting to work through it. Folks probably don’t need to hear the Cheers theme for the gazillionth time. One of the alternatives is I’ve got a playlist of about 60 of my favorite songs from Nigeria/Ghana (combo of Afrobeat and fuzz funk) that would never get close to 31 for any particular artist, but could whittle it down for a theme and would be fresher.

Pandora doesn’t do a year in review but they do have a list of top 20 artists played. I think this is all-time.

My top artists:
1. Blue October
2. Zac Brown band

Other top artists include - Parov Stelar, dropkick Murphys, Caro Emerald, Nathaniel Rateliff, Eminem, brothers Osborne, social distortion, Fitz and the Tantrums

Is this where we're doing Spotify countdown stuff?

Top 5 songs:
1. Decemberists - Burial Ground
2. Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman - Right Back to It
3. Phosphorescent - Revelator
4. The Black Keys - Beautiful People
5. Royel Otis - Murder on the Dance Floor

Top 5 Artists:
1. Belle and Sebastian
2. The Clash
3. Mac Miller
4. The Decemberists
5. The Hold Steady

My personal message was from Belle and Sebastian.

I don't think these lists are as indicative as they used to be, particularly if you make use of the DJ feature (as I do). It tends to go back to the same artists again and again. While that's true for everyone, more particularly, the MAD countdowns have a disproportionate impact as well.

It's still fun to see though.

I had one surprise on my top artists, but otherwise pretty predictable and MAD31centric:

73,000 minutes

Top Artists:
Opeth (11,000 minutes just here)
Journey
Oingo Boingo
People Under the Stairs
Lord Huron

Top Songs:
Oingo - On the Outside (70 times)
Oingo - Grey Matter
Oingo - Stay
Oingo - Heard Somebody Cry
Journey - song #2 on the countdown

I was a little surprised by my #4 artist, and the Journey numbers are especially impressive because I didn't start listening to them until July or so.

The Clashkupcho1Should I Stay or Should I Go
#3 from Combat Rock, Should I Stay or Should I Go is a song many have ascribed to Jones' stay in the band. But the song was released about 1 1/2 years prior to his leaving. I think one of the reasons is that he shouts "Split!" in the middle of the song. There's a different reason though:
About two minutes in, you can hear Mick Jones say, "Split!" While it sounds like it could be some kind of statement related to the song, Joe Ely tells Songfacts it had a much more quotidian meaning. Said Ely: "Me and Joe were yelling this translation back while Mick Jones sang the lead on it, and we were doing the echo part. And there was one time when the song kind of breaks down into just the drums right before a guitar part. And you hear Mick Jones saying, 'Split!' Just really loud, kind of angry. Me and Joe had snuck around in the studio, came up in the back of his booth where he was all partitioned off, and we snuck in and jumped and scared the hell out of him right in the middle of recording the song, and he just looked at us and says, 'Split!' So we ran back to our vocal booth and they never stopped the recording."
:lmao:

Instead
For the most part, Mick Jones has refused to assign meaning to the lyrics. He said in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh: "'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' wasn't about anything specific and it wasn't pre-empting my leaving The Clash. It was just a good rocking song, our attempt at writing a classic."
I'd say they succeeded.

This indecision's bugging me
Esta indecision me molesta
If you don't want me, set me free
Si no me quieres, librame
Exactly whom I'm supposed to be
Digame quien tengo ser

Don't you know which clothes even fit me?
Sabes que ropas me queda?
Come on and let me know
Me tienes que decir
Should I cool it or should I blow?
Me debo ir o quedarme?

#13: JOURNEY - KEEP ON RUNNIN'

Here is a perfect example me not understanding the masses. Looking at the Spotify numbers and I was very surprised this is one of the least listened to songs on the album and my list of theirs. It instantly grabs you by the ears and never lets up. If we are just talking Perry performance, I'd be hard pressed to find much better than this song as well - especially him belting out "it's okay". Great solo too. This is one that I thought I had underrated when I was listening to the playlist after submission. Now it would probably be bumped to the 9-10 range as I look at what is ahead.

Next: first appearance of my favorite Perry-ism "the lovin' things".

P.S.: to finish my thoughts about the concert footage you talked about @Pip's Invitation from the Escape tour. I had been watching several shows and while I overall like other full shows more, the 1-2 punch of Stone in Love to Keep on Runnin' was as good as it gets. Too bad it's ruined by my man on guitar and too much posing. ;)

Love this song. Was on many a mix tape back in the day.

Yes #13 - Wonderous Stories
Album - Going for the One (1977)

This was the lone “new” song on the compilation album Classic Yes, which is one of my most listened-to albums of all time.

This was written by Anderson (who got sole writing credits), but got reworked with contributions from the whole band. This song was a key reason Wakeman rejoined the band - he was sent an early sample and said he liked the direction the band was going in.

It’s just a beautiful melodious, joyful song and was seen by many as a move back to more radio accessible offerings from the band following the previous long form work on Tales. . . and Relayer.

I was wondering why I didn’t have this ranked higher, but there’s not much above it I’d want to move down. My list is STACKED!

#13: LORD HURON - I LIED

Another fun video from them, but a bit different tone to the song than the rest of the playlist. A little more country, a little sadder, but I find it gorgeous as well. Especially when Allison comes into the song. After submission this is the song that has grown on me the most on repeat listens. This wasn't in ranked order anyway, but this has grown into one of my favorites. The section I like best is that transition between the two:

I made a claim that I would dance until we're bones with my bride
I told you I would never leave you all alone but I lied

I read your letter in the morning by the lake and I cried

They were tears of joy, my chains are finally broken

Next: the song I am most likely to get caught singing and dancing to at work. :bag:

Tim MaiaDon QuixoteEu Amo Você
Eu Amo Você translates to “I Love You.” This is another one from Tim Maia’s debut album, and one of his more enduring love ballads. The repetition of the song title gives it some extra heart. His voice is in great form throughout, and reminds me a bit of Elvis at his most soulful, and then hits some out of this world notes at the end.

13. Peace Dream from Y Not (2010)

Previously ranked #14 - prior write-up below

Having discussed both John’s and George’s deaths, I want to turn to a couple of tributes to them from Ringo. The first is “Peace Dream,” a tribute to John from Ringo’s 2010 album Y Not. Y Not received moderately good reviews, and this song is one of the highlights (I’ll have another from this record later). Ringo summoned some of the best musicians for this tribute song, including Ben Harper, Edgar Winter, Joe Walsh, and most notably Sir Paul McCartney on bass.

Yeah, I know, Ringo…voice…simple lyrics…whatever. It’s a sweet and sincere song, and by the way Paul’s bass line is fabulous. But here’s where I admit something very important to the countdown: songs by one or more Beatles in tribute or in kindness to another Beatle get 52 squillion extra points from me. ####, I’m getting soft. This is not the last time this maxim will arise.

Last night I had a peace dream
You know how real dreams can be
The world was a better place
For you and me, can't you see?

No need for war no more
Better things we're fighting for
No more hunger, no more pain
I hope I have that dream again

Can you imagine all of this coming through?
It's really up to all of us to do
Just like John Lennon said in Amsterdam from his bed
"One day the world will wake up to see the reality"

Last night I had a peace dream
You know how real dreams can be
The world was a better place
For you and me, can't you see?

No need for war no more
Better things we're fighting for
No more hunger, no more pain
I hope the dream comes true someday

So try to imagine
If we give peace a chance
All the world could be living in harmony
One day our dream could be reality, reality

Last night I had a peace dream
You know how real dreams can be
The world was a better place
For you and me

No need for war no more
Better things we're fighting for
No more hunger, no more pain
We'll make our dream come true someday

Okay- who saw family-friendly LEGO movie and thought, "Hmm... Lonely Island. Yep sounds good."

I liked the song, but it did trigger some cognitive dissonance.
It worked so well with the weirdness and humor of the movie though. I love everything about that first movie.
But the Robyn/Lonely Island/Beck song is from Lego Movie 2.
Lonely Island is definitely muted here. No swearing, potty school boy humor or anything remotely offensive

13. Say Goodbye
Album: Allied Forces (1981)
Writers: Rik Emmett, Mike Levine and Gil Moore
Lead vocals: Rik Emmett
Chart History: Did not chart
Video?: Yes
Lyrical category: Love/lust/breakup

With "Say Goodbye," we say hello to Allied Forces, Triumph's fifth album and its only one to go platinum in the U.S. It was Ultimate Classic Rock's pick for best Triumph album and would likely win a poll of Triumph die-hards as well. When Never Surrender, the follow-up to Allied Forces, came out, Rik Emmett said in an interview that Progressions of Power was too heavy for AM radio, Just a Game was "too harmonic," whatever that means, but Allied Forces and Never Surrender combined the best of both. In the Rock & Roll Machine documentary, the band said that Allied Forces, the first album recorded at Gil Moore's Metalworks Studios, was the result of serious thought about how to tailor their sound to grow their audience; they leaned more on the Just a Game approach than the Progressions of Power sound, but they didn't just copy Just a Game. Allied Forces has four songs in my top 13 but none elsewhere on my list, so it's tempting to call it a "stars and scrubs album," but that's not really true. Its top four tracks are among the very best any hard rock/metal band had to offer in the early '80s, and its second- and third-tier tracks are still good but don't do as much for me as their counterparts on some of the other albums.

"Say Goodbye," Allied Forces' closer and third single, had the album's only video that wasn't taken from the band's live performance in Baltimore, and it was this video that was my first exposure to Triumph just after my family got cable in mid-1982 and I became addicted to MTV. Tween me was definitely impressed by the band playing on a platform shaped like a flying V guitar, and Emmett playing a double-necked guitar. I was immediately hooked, because the song rocked the hell out but also had a strong melody. In retrospect, this track is probably the closest Triumph ever got to power pop. It jumps from one incredible hook to another, exploding into a Big Chorus. We go through that cycle again before we arrive at a keening bridge that builds up tension with constant refrains of "don't say you love me, don't say you need me" before releasing into the Big Chorus again. This is a ridiculously well-constructed song that should have made more impact than it did.

Another notable thing about this track is that it is one of the few Triumph songs that does not have an Emmett guitar solo in the middle of it. But we still get to appreciate his talent via his soaring notes in the intro and the trills he provides before the chorus.

Lyrically, this is a run-of-the-mill breakup song, and what's most notable is how well the words fit with the melodies.

Despite its status as a single which had a video and got airplay on FM radio, "Say Goodbye" was not a regular part of Triumph's live sets. There are only a handful of documented live performances, all between 1981 and 1983. Emmett has occasionally performed it at solo shows, however.

At #12, the song that closed the regular set of the one Triumph show I saw.

Which is better. I see why Michael Bolton had to get them to tone it down.

Thoughts on the #15s of the artists I know well:

Yes -- "I'm Running" is my favorite song on Big Generator, and the only one that reminds you they were a prog band.

Tweedy/Wilco -- "I'm Always in Love" has a great melody and a bright sheen like many of the tracks from Summerteeth.

My Morning Jacket -- "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream, Pt 2" is the song I was speaking of when I said I see "Smoking from Shooting" as the intro to another track. It's one of band's most tense and dramatic songs.

P-Funk -- "Alice in My Fantasies" is an insane blast of guitar heroics and over-the-top vocals. It's almost atonal at times and not really funky at all. Clinton and co. aren't given enough credit for the sheer breadth of their material.

Bee Gees -- "Lonely Days" is my top pre-disco (ie, pre-Main Course) Bee Gees track. It's got great dynamics and the ending soars. They would sometimes close their shows with this.

Thoughts on the #14s of the artists I know well:

Yes -- "Then" is quaint-sounding but has some thunderous bass from Chris Squire.

Tweedy/Wilco -- "Open Mind" could pass for one of their Woody Guthrie interpretations. Notable for being a firmly alt-country track in a period where they weren't doing a whole lot of that.

My Morning Jacket -- "Wordless Chorus" cracks my top half of Z, which means it's pretty amazing. "We are the innovators/They are the imitators" always gets a rise out of the crowd in concert.

P-Funk -- The bass bombs that accompany "I want the bomb/I want the P-Funk" tell you everything you need to know.

Bee Gees -- "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" definitely sounds like a Zombies outtake. And of course there are Beatles-inspired passages.

Thoughts on the #13s of the artists I know well:

Yes -- "Wonderous Stories" is a rare acoustic Yes song. It boasts a gorgeous melody and once again some amazing bass work from Chris Squire.

Tweedy/Wilco -- "New Madrid" is one of the best Uncle Tupelo songs and comes from the album that introduced me to Tweedy.

My Morning Jacket -- "Cobra" is wild and having a live version on the playlist was the right call because the studio version, with all its twists and turns and sound effects, can be tough for the uninitiated. They don't play this in concert regularly but it's a big deal when they do.

P-Funk -- Bootsy's "Stretched Out" would fit in on any Parliament record from the '70s. To my ears there are similarities with "Do That Stuff," which Uruk featured earlier.

Bee Gees -- "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" is another one of their best pre-disco tracks, and was their first US #1. The melody is top-notch and the singing is achingly compelling.
