This is where it starts. The 1st song on the 1st album.

On the east coast, we prettymuch didn't hear the Crüe until Shout at the Devil in 1983, and then went backwards to this album. But I'm sure those living in LA at the time this was released (late 81) were floored by their sound. Raw, aggressive, kinda punk, kinda metal... very different from what was out there. I like this first album a lot - it's unpolished and a little rough in places but it definitely captures four young dudes trying to do something loud and different. And did they ever - one of the biggest bands of the 80's starts with this song.

If you put the intro together with the main song, this would easily be the longest song from Candlebox. Even without that, there are definitely a minority that reach the 5:12 length the “main” song is. The intro definitely helps to set the mood, while becoming essentially a 3-minute Peter Klett solo. Though obviously I’m 100% here for that. As far as the mood, I can’t say for sure whether this song in particular is inspired by Led Zeppelin, though that band is unsurprisingly an inspiration for Kevin Martin and Candlebox. Of course, the heart of “Breathe Me In” is a love song. Lyrics like “Breathe me in /so I am whole” and “(you’re) so much more than I ever hoped” leave little wiggle room there. While trying not to gush too much on this one, to me it’s got a lovely mood, a strong melody, the vocals shine as always, and hey, Klett gets a (shorter) solo in the “main” part too. I mean, I put this at #5, so obviously I love it, and this was certainly one of the songs I was most excited to share with folks.

Next on the countdown, we have 2 from the debut and 2 from Happy Pills left. We visit the latter first, for a song that would be a heck of a stampede.

Seriously, though - 90% was for me anyway. I'd like to go back and fill in more previous artists on the spreadsheets, but it's a pain in the *** to do it after the fact. Doing it mostly as I made the playlists was so much easier, and plus I have access to all of them whenever. Maybe what I should say is that I have them in this simple form, and I will wait a week or two afterward to post any that people didn't do themselves. I 100% get it if people had theirs ready, wanted a cool pic with it, put more songs than 31, rearranged songs - whatever. I'm not here to step on those creative toes, just thought I'd try doing it this way and liked how much easier it was.

Absolutely none taken. I thought it was funny. One was an add I wasn't as keen on when I was listening, but I really liked The Beths tune I picked out. He had warned me he wasn't cleaning up the spreadsheet for bands with "the" in the name.

Awesome to both comments.
Robyn is a fun artist to dive deep into.
Once she wasnt a 90s r&b puppet anymore, her collaborators and her solo were more reflective of her personality

Some of the collaborations work poorly, but most are at least interesting. One more to come

As mentioned previously, about 5-6 of the Röyksopp collaborations were worthy of being in Robyns top 31, but better to showcase stuff we havent heard.

Her list runs deep with tracks like Cobrastyle, Honey, Bum Like You, Love is Free, How and Psycho all worthy of being included. Plus about 20 others

Nah, there's definitely some Floyd influence in there also. There's even a quote from the wiki from Kevin Martin that (In part) says "There's quite a few really kind of dark, moody album tracks they’re going to be long and very Pink Floyd-ish". I almost included that here (the longest song on the album) or "The Answer" (the longer, bonus content song), though it was from before the album was released, so I wasn't sure it held up entirely. Nonetheless, the comparisons to Pink Floyd hold up, at least to me.

Thoughts on the #5s of artists I know well:

Yes -- "Long Distance Runaround / The Fish" is indeed a perfect pairing and it's inconceivable for me to hear one without the other. LDR is a great pop tune -- a rare thing for them pre-90125 -- that still manages to show off their talent, and The Fish is a tour de force of sonic creativity. Aside from the drum loop and the incidental vocals at the end, EVERY sound on this track is from Chris Squire's bass. Amazing.

Tweedy/Wilco -- "How to Fight Loneliness" is very reflective of Tweedy's state of mind at the time and one of the few tracks on Summerteeth that could have fit on the first two Wilco albums.

My Morning Jacket -- "Lowdown" is another great contributor to the keening vibe of At Dawn.

P-Funk -- Bootsy's "Munchies for Your Love" is a weed-induced fever dream. There are definite psychedelic and prog elements in play, but the end result is a brew that is all Bootsy's own. And the bass bombs are still there.

Bee Gees -- "Wind of Change" features an incredible performance from Blue Weaver on keys. This song does about the most with the "new" Bee Gees style of 1975 as any track possibly could have. I am hard-pressed to name a better three opening tracks on any album in any genre than Main Course's Nights on Broadway-Jive Talkin'-Wind of Change.

For those following along, this week’s Deep Dive is keeping with the Avian theme, with the unfortunately not from Kansas, Jayhawks. Nowhere near as big as the eagles, sadly they seem to be underrated.

From Minnesota with a country rock sound, they had influence on Uncle Tupelo, among others.

Admittedly, I first listened to this band only for their name as I erroneously assumed they were from the third greatest place in the US. (Lawrence, KS) over the years I’ve liked a lot of their stuff but haven’t gotten deep yet.

It’s tempting to use them for a future countdown.

Random musings and thoughts on the #5s.

Broken record, but yet another great playlist top to bottom - not a back track on the playlist, and I've been through the playlist 3x now. One of the many things I like about this format is even if as we get to the 10s it's not my favorite from the artist, there is still the building appreciation for the artist and why the MAD31er chose them for the adventure. That is what adds to my love of the playlists as a whole as we get into the top 10s or so. I am very much looking forward to the themes next round, but that will be something I miss.

• So why again did I think I didn't like The Clash?? I've bee thinking about that and one of the main reasons is I saw them coded as punk more than anything else. I like just a little punk to begin with and way back when I dabbled was doing Sex Pistols, Fugazi, Husker Du, etc.. and they weren't that. I wrote them of as too poppy or something in my head. Of course they do that and many other genres well, and because of that the did have some reggae/ska in them, which was probably the bigger strike against them for me at the time. tl;dr = Train in Vain is an awesome song and I am a music knucklehead often.
• Speaking of that building appreciation, a goes out to @Eephus. I've been loving the poppy guitars and when Dashboard hit it added to the realization and love of the song.
• Jeff Tweedy has been a late bloomer for me on the playlist. It goes to my biases and writing him off as too country-ish for me to like. I've really liked the top 10 here, especially How to Fight Loneliness.
• Loved Naveed and it's one of my favorites by them. I wrote down to explore that album, I didn't know they had one before Clumsy.
• Really dug the bouncy beat to Does This Mean You're Moving On? They continue to impress and show off the diversity of music.
• Whatchulookinat - uh, **** yeah!! Wasn't expecting this from Whitney.

• I can't think of a weirder transition on one of these than Munchies for Your Love ---> The Night We Met. I gravitate more to the Funkadelic stuff, but this was a great ride.
• Wind of Change - loved it and have listened to it about a dozen times now.
• Dangerous - I need to think of different categories or awards. There have been other artists I have clicked with overall more, but this has to be the surprise album of Rd 4. I have listened to it multiple times now.
• I Don't Believe You was my favorite Ringo so far. I was talking to my dad today a little about music as I redid his Spotify downstairs. I could have sworn I had a small stack of albums from my parents in the basement, and have an image of Sgt. Peppers being one. My mom said at Christmas, if so it was his. Couldn't find that, but I was a little surprised that the first person he looked up was George Harrison. I laughed because he said something like "well, not this downer song - I like the more upbeat ones". Anyway, this song reminded me of that conversation as I listened to it again tonight, and I should ask him about solo Ringo.

I'm still a bit sensitive on the whole reaction removal thing.

I'm even more irritated by the slobbering, obsequious "thank you" posts for its reinstatement. It's like people here are in an abusive relationship.

It blows my mind a bit when I stop to think that a group of middle aged adults would get so worked about a damn laugh emoji. So much so, they got it taken away.
