Haha, then we jump into: “Yeah. . . Kick it!”Speaking of fun transitions, I initially thought the black midi to Nina Simone change was just a massive Prog-like shift in tempo.

Steal this song.self loathing bandAlso, why does Belly have "Delete Spotify" on her (their?) Spotify landing page when they're on Spotify?
Perhaps they want to be off Spotify but their label and/or management has the final say and they want them to remain?Could someone please put Kid Rock and Against Me into the pleasant surprises column for me?
TIA
Also, why does Belly have "Delete Spotify" on her (their?) Spotify landing page when they're on Spotify?
Maybe "Go With The Flow"? I guess titus would know and the rest of us will find outSo we already have a candidate for a song to appear twice in this exercise with Buffet's cover of CSN's "Southern Cross".
How about next 31 I do Radiohead? According to the other thread they sound alike.I was listening this AM on shuffle and briefly thought someone had picked Nickelback... if only.

It's Jeff Lynne.
- I never heard the Wilbury's cover of Runaway. I imagine it's for the Tom Petty slot, but who is handling the vocals, Jeff Lynne? or perhaps it's Del Shannon as he was making appearances on Petty albums during that time?
Lol. Nah, I already did my 31 thread independently, so I don't think I would fire them up. - Guided By Wire - Neko Case
- Absolute Beginners - The Jam
- Suffering Juke Box - Silver Jews
- Crash Years - The New Pornographers
- Destiny - Zero 7, Sia, Sophie Baker
- Fame - David Bowie (will be a recurring theme)

- Summer's End - John Prine
Other Notes
- There's a lot more bands that I do not know this time around - some of which I can already tell that I'm going to love
- On the flip side, with all due respect to the Thumper Rule, there was a handful of bands/artists that I already knew or strongly assumed that I did not like during the reveal process. In the spirit of this exercise, I am giving all a clean slate and will listen to each song. However this time around, my expectations were on point and I even skipped through a few songs (Played all at least halfway through). Perhaps a few will make my Top 5 "New To Me" lists at some point, but I do think there's some that just aren't going to be my thing.
- The Tchaikovsky piece is a great ending to the list - I'll never be a real classical guy but I always like what I hear and do throw it on once in a while - this will be a good final playlist to add to for when I do feel in the mood.
- Other new to me songs that just missed Top 5: Good Year - The Refreshments; Heads Roll Off - Frightened Rabbit
- I never heard the Wilbury's cover of Runaway. I imagine it's for the Tom Petty slot, but who is handling the vocals, Jeff Lynne? or perhaps it's Del Shannon as he was making appearances on Petty albums during that time?

I didn’t skip the Mastadon song. I actually liked the jam but was not a big fan of the vocals or metal, generally, now that I’m over 50.Round 31

I've said it before, but if my artist is one of these for people I would honestly rather know. I agree. I’d kind of like to know too. With Sigur Ros, they’re a bit of an acquired taste so I knew there would be strong dislikes and skips from a lot of people. But I also felt so strongly about them that I hoped I could win over a few people. Mastodon must probably feel the same way.Round 31

Even though Sigar Ros wasn't really my thing I still listened to every song but did sometimes skip on a second playlist listen. I did notice that if I was listening at work they were just kinda meh for me. Some was bad but some was okay in small doses but not something I'd seek out. Very fair pov. I think there is more progginess to come and that might attract a couple people to some songs, but these are about as clean and non-growly as the vocals get for them. There might be a song or two that is just Brann singing, but I can't remember offhand. On Thursday we will get the other end of their vocal spectrum, and the song I am guessing few will enjoy.I didn’t skip the Mastadon song. I would say they’re a band I likely won’t really get into after this is done, but wouldn’t be surprised to see them get some Top 5 “New To Me” songs selected.
They were proggy enough that the heaviness worked better for me but just not something I put on myself anymore.
I love Sigur Ros, and thought it was a good selection. That said, personally I still listen to them in small doses when I am in the mood - there are a couple of their albums that are in my rotation. Now your playlist will be in my rotation. They are a difficult artist to mix into a playlist with a wide mix of genres though. It's not like we are constructing these playlists for flow and cohesiveness, so that's also to be expected with many of our selections too.I agree. I’d kind of like to know too. I am not keeping track or anything, I just quick scan after I enter the songs and pick something I think fits or just makes me laugh.I was not angling for a playlist title by putting it in the first playlist, but that's a nice benefit. Especially because Chicago got 0 playlist titles last time.31. Absolute Beginners
This song turned out to be a very appropriate intro for this exercise, as its title has to do with beginnings, it was the first song the band released that presented a more overt soul/R&B influence, and it was the first song by The Jam that I ever heard.
Could almost be a thread of its own - Artists named after another artist's song. Also, why in the world has Radiohead not made a song titled Talking Heads?

Most definitely not loathed. Talking Heads are on the Mount Rushmore of American bands.I picked Talking Heads because I like them. A lot. I hope they aren't loathed but that's life's rich pageant. Not everybody has to like everything, but I hope folks are giving all the artists a fair shake.
The first time I heard this was on a bus on a class field trip to NYC in 9th grade. I was sitting next to this kid Phil who had the tape and he lent me his walkman while he tried to get with Josie the next row over. Around lunch, a bunch of us ditched for a bit and went to Crazy Eddie's (my first time being in NY and other kids said that was the place to go for music) and I bought a copy for myself. Then I went into one of those urban electronics stores to buy some blank maxells so I could dub it for my friends. I asked how much for the 3-pack of 90 min tapes and dude said "kid, if you're gonna bust my balls, you can get the #### outta here."Beastie Boys #31 - Fight for Your Right
Album - Licensed to Ill (1986)
I think they are, but I also think people are pretty clear about types of music they don't click with or just flat out dislike. I think an artist like Talking Heads falls way more into people's traditional wheelhouse than metal or rap, for example. I promise I will give everybody's artists and songs a fair, fully attentive listen. I promise that anybody taking reggae or country has the biggest roadblock to me fully loving them as well.I don't know Sia from Kia bit no skips here. Liked the first one.I agree. Yes, I definitely heard Fiona Apple in there as well.I liked Mastodon enough to keep listening. Yeah, I wished they had like a Dio or Bruce Dickenson to wail something rather than the guttural barking thing, but they were satisfyingly heavy. Chalk me up as another who liked the Sia trip-hop thing. Kind of a gave me Fiona Apple vibes.
This is another one I knew from when I was very young because my parents had the So Far compilation on cassette. (They also had the first CSN album on LP, but I don't remember that getting play in the house until I was about 10.) It sounded like nothing else, which was also the case when it came out and is kind of the case today. It has an odd guitar tuning, a Spanish flavor (Stills was fluent and included more overt Latin music-related tracks on his solo albums) and four sections that are quite different from each other -- and yet it was released as a single because the folks running Atlantic Records at the time understood there was a market for brilliant but off-kilter work. The incredible harmony arrangement helped, of course.
The lyrics are mostly about Stills being dumped by Judy Collins, but the last section, sung in Spanish, is about the troubles in Cuba. Wiki: "Stills has said that he intentionally made the final stanzas unexpected and difficult, even using a foreign language for the lyrics, 'just to make sure nobody would understand it'."
Wait you don’t like covers? I chose one with you in mind. Lol.Some of my biggest surprises of the 31s for a variety of reasons were:
I Got Loaded - before this song, I could have named you exactly 1 Los Lobos song.
Southern Cross - see above. No little Buffett, but asumed it was stuff I wouldn't dig.
Suffering Jukebox - 0 knowledge of this artist, but was expecting folk.
Dare Me - just know the hits. That be some funky *** bass, mama.
Little Darling - I took exactly 1 song for zamboni to surprise me with a Lizzy song I haven't gotten to yet.
Head Rolls Off - another I think I have heard peripherally, but could tell you a thing about them.
Overall, great start to the list. I didn't skip anything, but y'all are already pushing it with the covers.![]()
My 2 biggestare:
Black Midi - I was liking it, but I also have the impression that this one could be the Bauhaus of Part 2 in that it also scared me at night.
The Jam - again, I liked it but I also got a whiff of bands that I normally don't click with. You got me with Chicago, so until proven otherwise - in Pip I trust.![]()
I had no idea either that they covered it, but once I heard it, I knew it was going to be my #31.Runaway -- kind of cheating because it's faithful to the original, which I know well, but I had no idea the Wilburys cut a version of it
Not sure when/where the covers talk started. It's not that I never like them, it's just odds are if I know the song elsewhere, I won't like it as much. Just a factor of how well known and liked by me the song is that's being covered.Wait you don’t like covers? I chose one with you in mind. Just a factor of how well known and liked by me the song is that's being covered.Wait you don’t like covers? I chose one with you in mind.
I didn't skip anything, but y'all are already pushing it with the covers.
Some I do flat out hate and try to avoid - perfect example is Johnny Cash's version of Hurt.
