Michael Vick Bandwagon rolling like a freight train (1 Viewer)

i might be in the minority here, but i dont see vick doing anything special this week in Det.it's mostly due to gut feeling , injuries, and the fact that Det. is somewhat improved and pissed aboot last week.
IM a Lions fan and I think Vick Kills the Lions. The DL for Detroit is awesome....but if the Eagles protect at all Vick can torch them. I watch Vick play against GB last week and he played very well. GBs secondary is way better than Detroits too.

Anyone else get the feeling that Detroit will come to play real angry football Sunday, after the whole "not a TD" fiasco.

I'm not convinced Vick will have an easy time against a team that feels got burnt last week.

Kolb looked bad in his short time on field. The Packers were definitely caught off guard when Vick ran the offense in 2nd 1/2. Detroit will be ready to face Vick with all the 1st round talent on their defense to keep Vick contained and make him beat them with his arm.

p.s. Kolb dynasty owner who missed out on Vick on waivers...

pretend Vick goes 16 of 26 for160 yards and 1 TD and 12 rushes for 85 yards and 2 TD'syou think Kolb starts week 3 ?yeah right
Vick hasn't had a multiple rushing TD game in 5 years. He hasn't had multiple rushing TDs and anywhere close to 85 rushing yards in the same game in 8.
But they are playing DET.
DET has one of the best DLs in the league. Just ask the fans.
Ha. burn. Detroit is improving. this is true. their d-line now has 2 people on it to worry about. one of the best in the league? not yet. sooner then many think though.

Game-changer: Clay Matthews’ defensive teammates had to give him a hard time for knocking Kolb out of the game. After all, the Eagles were actually better with his replacement, Michael Vick. “We said, ‘What are you doing man?’ We’d rather have (Kolb) in there,” Pickett said with a laugh. “Vick, he’s a headache for anybody who plays him. We came out (of college) together, and I think I’ve played him every other year and he’s a headache to stop every year for a defense. He just showed he’s back in form. But our defense answered the call.” Vick rallied the Eagles from a 20-3 deficit by running 11 times for 103 yards and completing 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards. But he was stopped short on a fourth-and-1 sneak in the fourth quarter, sealing the Packers’ victory. “(Vick) he changed (the game) a whole lot,” Jenkins said. “You were almost wishing they put the other quarterback back in. Chasing him around is not fun at all.” McCarthy said the Packers did some prep work for Vick thinking he’d play a handful of Wildcat snaps, but they weren’t ready for him on such an extended basis. “We prepared for Michael vick more in the wildcat-type packages, and I thought Michael did an excellent job,” McCarthy said. “He adds a whole different dimension to the game, particularly with his running skills and ability to extend plays. I thought our defense, we stressed all training camp playing ‘adversity defense.’ At the end of the game, fourth-and-1, with a quarterback in the backfield, when you have a number of different options, that’s a big play by our defense.” Said defensive coordinator Dom Capers: “I think Michael Vick played six plays in the first half, which was kind of what we were anticipating. So we had a limited game plan for Michael Vick and a large game plan for Kolb. Obviously, a lot of the game plan we had for Kolb – when he went out in the second half – went out the window. We had to adjust.”

Vick seeks to boost Eagles now, own value later

By Len Pasquarelli

The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com

As if there aren't enough subplots already surrounding the Sunday return of Michael Vick to a starting lineup for the first time in nearly four years, here's yet another unplumbed element to consider: For the Philadelphia Eagles backup, the matchup against the Detroit Lions represents a chance to showcase himself for 2011.

Vick's only two regular-season starts since signing with Philadelphia in 2009 have been as a wide receiver. Because he is in the final season of his two-year contract with the club, and he sorely wants to start again as a quarterback somewhere in the league, Sunday's game takes on even more importance for him.

He can be an unrestricted free agent next spring and, given the undeniable paucity of quality quarterbacks in the NFL, Vick, according to people close to him who spoke with The Sports Xchange late in the week, regards the opportunity to start in place of the injured Kevin Kolb as a bit of an audition. The curiosity factor alone will make for pretty good theater. A breakout performance, in essentially Vick's first game back as a real quarterback, could result in opportunity and redemption.

There were plenty of rumors this spring that the Eagles might dangle Vick in trade discussions. But they instead dealt starter Donovan McNabb, paid Vick the $1.5 million roster bonus he was due and kept him around. But on the open market? Let's just say his performance against the Lions could spark interest next spring.

"He's concentrating on doing [well] for the Eagles, but he's aware of the big picture, too," allowed one member of the Vick camp.

The sentiments of some throaty Eagles fans aside, Kolb will return to the starting lineup when his concussion headaches subside, coach Andy Reid made clear. But if Vick plays well as a starter, there's a chance he could be in some franchise's starting lineup, and become again a major headache for opponents, next year.

And he knows it.

One of the NFL's smartest head coaches, holder of an economics degree from Georgetown and a guy who often uses computer technology to help conjure up a game plan, Detroit boss Jim Schwartz might load all the best information he can muster into his laptop for Sunday's game and it still might fry the hard drive.

Computers, after all, operate on valid reasoning, inference and connectivity. Yet there might be no principle, and certainly no logical blueprint, for defending the mercurial Vick, who will start in place of the concussed Kolb.

"He's a scary guy ... but you've still got to prepare for him," said Schwartz, whose team came within the application of an arcane rule last week of opening a season with a victory for the first time since 2007. "You can't just throw up your hands and say, 'Oh, well.' Hey, he's human."

Maybe so. But Vick, who will make his first regular-season start in 1,358 days, can present some pretty inhuman (and inhumane) challenges to a defense. In relief of Kolb during last week's 27-20 loss to Green Bay, Vick threw the ball well (101.9 rating), but most conspicuously ran for 103 yards. It marked the eighth 100-yard rushing game of Vick's career -- vs. only two 300-yard passing games -- and after appearing a step slow in 2009, and at times tentative, he seemed back to the Vick of old.

"I felt some things coming back," Vick said afterward.

Before his incarceration for dog fighting, Vick in 2006 became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for more than a 1,000 yards in a season. His last start came on New Year's Eve 2006, a 24-17 loss at Philadelphia, when he left the game just one snap into the second half with an ankle injury. Before that injury, sustained on a Juqua Parker sack, Vick completed just 8 of 14 passes for 81 yards and had three runs for 17 yards.

Sunday will mark the first time that a Schwartz-designed defense will face Vick. In the 2003 matchup between Atlanta and Tennessee, when Schwartz was defensive coordinator for the Titans, Vick was still recovering from a broken leg and didn't play. None of the starters on the revamped Detroit defense has faced Vick, either, and that has, according to the Detroit News, caused some sleepless nights among the Lions' defensive staffers and players.

Michael Vick has six more 100-yard rushing games than 300-yard passing games in his career. (Getty Images) Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham joked to the paper that the sleep-deprived staff "look like zombies." Said cornerback Chris Houston, who was actually in training camp with Vick in Atlanta in 2007: "You can't make a mistake or, boom, he's gone and up the field."

Defending Vick presents a bit of a conundrum, because a unit has to be aggressive and force him to make quick decisions, but at the same time must also be disciplined and stay in its rush lanes. Over-commit to Vick or overreach, and he is apt to get outside the pocket. And that's when he's most dangerous.

"Clearly, you can't let him get outside the containment," said linebacker Zack Follett. "That's when he makes plays with his feet. And, really, if you've watched him play, it's when he makes a lot of plays with his arm too. So it's a double-edged sword."

Somewhat dichotomously, Vick's biggest weakness -- an inability to read defenses and sit patiently in the pocket and wait for a receiver to uncover -- is arguably his biggest strength as well. On pass plays, Vick will make one or two reads -- usually two at most -- and then pull the ball down and run with it. That might put him in harm's way, noted Lions second-year safety Louis Delmas, but it just as often means a big hurtin' for a defense.

"You can't let him get off," said Follett. "If he gets that confidence going, like, 'They can't stop me no matter [what I do],' he feeds off it. And one big play can lead to another then."

Last week, in replacing Kolb for the second half, after having worked a series in the first half and a few snaps in the "wildcat" formation and as a wide receiver, Vick had nine of the Eagles' 10 longest plays. That included runs of 34, 23, 17, 15 and 12 yards. He also had a pair of 27-yard completions as he connected on 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards. Unofficially, half of Vick's 16 completions came when he was outside of the pocket.

It was a very solid outing, one that Vick acknowledged "meant a lot" to him. But a big game against the Lions on Sunday could ultimately mean a lot more.

Eagles' Michael Vick poses challenge for Lions' defense

QB has ability to scramble and throw the ball deep

Gunther Cunningham looked more sleep-deprived than usual when he met with the media this past week. The reason: Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

"He's scary," said Cunningham, the Lions' defensive coordinator. "He looks like the Michael Vick of old, who was one of the best athletes in the game."

Vick ran for 103 yards and passed for 175 after starter Kevin Kolb suffered a concussion last week.

In today's battle of the backups -- Kolb is out for Philadelphia, while Shaun Hill starts for injured Matthew Stafford for the Lions -- it's Vick who's causing the most consternation.

"He puts a lot of pressure on you," Cunningham said. "Not only is he a gifted athlete, he can throw the ball and throw it deep down the field, and obviously he's running the ball. You all write about the wildcat offense, well, he is the wildcat offense."

The only quarterback in NFL history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season, Vick will start today for the first time in almost four years.

He was suspended for 2007 after pleading guilty to federal dog-fighting charges, spent 18 months in prison, and returned to a new team with a new role last year.

"I'm ready," Vick told reporters Friday in Philadelphia. "I think last week kind of broke the ice for me as far as getting the jitters out and going out there and playing when the game counted and it was on the line. I'm not too nervous, ready to get going, ready to get out there and play."

After giving up 462 yards of offense in last week's loss to the Bears, the Lions are ready, too.

Vick isn't as dangerous a passer as Kolb or Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, but he presents a unique challenge with his scrambling ability. His 103 yards rushing last week were more than 15 NFL teams, including the Lions.

"I mean, (it's) Michael Vick," linebacker Zack Follett said. "I leaned over to a buddy and said, 'Man, I never thought I'd have to be tackling this guy.' We all know of his ability, and it's something you have to respect or he can burn you with it."

Follett, who admitted to wearing a Vick jersey when he was younger, said he expects the Lions to keep a spy on Vick to prevent him from taking off in the pocket.

Rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh said the line won't scale back its pass rush -- the Lions had four sacks last week -- for fear of Vick breaking a big run.

"I know how to play against guys like that," Suh said. "You just got to be able to get on them quicker and close fast, because if you allow them to use their legs as a weapon, they will cause havoc all game."

And Lions coach Jim Schwartz said the defense has "a couple different things (planned) for the designed runs, a couple things for scrambles."

"That's no different than any scrambling quarterback," Schwartz said. "But you need to do that with Michael Vick or else you get 100 yards rushing in a half."

Hill can do his part to help contain Vick, too.

He played the second half last week when Stafford suffered a sprained shoulder, but the offense struggled under his command.

He finished 9-for-19 for 88 yards and committed two turnovers.

For the Lions to avoid their third straight 0-2 start, Hill has to be more efficient with the ball.

"Shaun's got a gift of making everything work," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. "He's very, very comfortable in what we're doing. I can't wait to see Shaun get out there and get another shot."

Not sure how Reid can get away with his pride and ego being more important then winning. I can see Vick playing this week and next. if he does really well how can they go back to Kolb?? if they do and he flops I think the fans would have Reid's head..

My favorite thing about Mike Vick is when he has about 10 highlight plays each game that take your breath away because they were so incredibly awesome and amazing feats of physical abilities of near superhuman levels, misses receivers by 7 yards, and loses by 10 points.

Starting Vick over Brady, also. I think they both will have great games but Vick's ability to score with his legs (6pts instead of 4pt passing) gives him a little more upside this week.

We shall see....

Starting 'em over Ryan (who has a decent match-up this week)

Prediction 215 yards passing 84 yards rushing 2 TD's one rushing one passing

I'll probably catch hell for it, but I'm starting him over Brady vs Jets this week. If week 2 were played out 1000 times I feel confident this would prove to be the correct choice. This week, Vicks over/under is probably around 1.5 passing TDs and Brady maybe around 2.0. I think the rushing ability of Vick is the difference.
I'll be catching hell with you. I'm doing the same. I'm an Eagles fan & I personally hope Vick remains the guy because Kolb has done nothing to impress me, but even if he doesn't I've got Brady. For at least this week the matchups are too good/bad to ignore. If I get burned by it, I'll learn by it...

Th team that I am playing is also following your lead. I absolutely love it. Benching a healthy Brady for any reason just seems like reaching for a fools paradise.

Kolb can't play behind this o-line. Vick is obviously the QB this team needs to compete.
Won't matter. It's still Kolb's team. Looks decent so far. Not spectacular. Can't run as much without a decent backup.
226 yards and 2 TDs in half a game with 0 turnovers is just "decent"? When was the last time a Philly QB ever performed that well in the first half??
he's missed some throws too.

Well, he's not Jesus.

Kolb's been cleared to play, let's see who gets the week 3 start.

UPDATE: Glazer: Kevin Kolb Cleared To Play By Independent Physician

Jay Glazer reported on Fox just minutes ago that Kevin Kolb passed the concussion test administered by Dr. William Welch, chief of Neurosurgery at University of Pennsylvania hospital.

Passing the test by an independent physician is the final step in the post concussion process. Glazer said that Kolb is technically cleared to play and practiced yesterday, but the Eagles will hold him out today as a precautionary measure.

This is not a debate. It's already been reported today that Kolb will start in Week 3. Get over the Vick love. He played well both games. He is not starting in Game 3.

Please read the thread....I have no Vick love. I'm really expecting it to be Kolb and want him to do well.ETA: I've seen nothing official naming Kolb the starter, but I hope and expect its him.

They said it very early in the broadcast. And Chris Rose just repeated it.

Yup...hope people picked up Vick cheap. He's guaranteed no further starts this year. Might happen, but right now its not guaranteed.

There aren't too many people who actually thought the Eagles would start Vick over a healthy Kolb in Week 3. Because we know the Eagles aren't smart enough to do that.It will take Andy Reid about 5 more weeks to figure out what the rest of the world already knows.

Pretty solid week 2. But looks like Kolb is gonna play. IF he is ineffective... look out. Vick looked awesome and ran the eagles offense too, not merely the 'vivk' offense.

Vick takes seat as Reid picks Kolb to start

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles coach Andy Reid said Kevin Kolb will be the starting quarterback at Jacksonville on Sunday, despite two impressive performances by Michael Vick.

Kolb has been cleared to practice after missing the second half of a season-opening loss to Green Bay and Sunday's win over Detroit because of a concussion. He will start unless he has a setback this week.

Vick still will play in Philadelphia's version of the wildcat offense.

"I think it's a beautiful situation," Reid said Monday. "I look at it a lot differently than other people look at it. I've got two quarterbacks that can play at a very important position. I'm a happy guy about it. There are a lot of teams that don't have good quarterbacks, ones that they feel like they can win with, and I feel like we can with both of those guys."

Vick wasn't the only quarterback involved in a reshuffling. But unlike the Eagles, the Panthers and Bills are making changes because their starters played poorly.

Rookie Jimmy Clausen will start over Matt Moore when the Panthers (0-2) play the Bengals on Sunday, and Ryan Fitzpatrick takes over for Trent Edwards when the Bills (0-2) visit the Patriots.

On Sunday, Oakland's Jason Campbell was benched in favor of Bruce Gradkowski, who led the Raiders to a 16-14 win over St. Louis, and Sunday's starter against Arizona has not been announced.

"There isn't going to be a controversy," Raiders coach Tom Cable said. "I'll make a good decision, the right decision, and we'll go from there."

Cable said he will wait until Wednesday before revealing his decision.

Hall plans to do it his way

WASHINGTON — Frustrated about late defensive breakdowns during Sunday's 30-27 overtime loss to the Texans, Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said he plans to follow the opponent's top receiver regardless of which side of the field the wide receiver is on.

And Hall said defensive coordinator Jim Haslett's opinion on the subject was not of great importance to him.

"Don't matter what he say. This is my team; this is my defense," Hall said. "So I'm going to follow the receiver around. That's what I'm going to do."

Later in the day, Hall said he respects Haslett and did not mean to appear critical about his role on the team. He also said he was not upset about Haslett's scheme or his teammates' performance in the loss to the Texans.

Footnotes.

The Steelers aren't saying yet how long quarterback Dennis Dixon will be out with a left knee injury, a problem that typically sidelines a player for multiple games.

• Browns center Alex Mack accused Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith of grabbing his private parts during Sunday's game.

• Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has a strained left hamstring, but he would not rule himself out of Sunday night's game at Miami.

• Rams tight end Billy Bajema will be sidelined two to four weeks with a knee injury, and defensive lineman Darell Scott has a high ankle sprain that also could put him out as long as a month.

• Cowboys tight end Jason Witten (concussion) said he feels fine and expects to play this weekend at Houston.

• Jaguars backup quarterback Luke McCown will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee late in Sunday's loss to the Chargers.

So what is Vick's value going forward? My guess is that he's worth a roster spot if you have room just in case the Kolb controversy sparks up again. Other than that though, I don't see any real value right now.

So if you did the shark move and picked him up off waivers for the week and you don't have any bench space, is the shark move now to just cut him and move on?

Pretty solid week 2. But looks like Kolb is gonna play. IF he is ineffective... look out. Vick looked awesome and ran the eagles offense too, not merely the 'vivk' offense.

There was more to Reid's QB quote:Andy Reid is aware of the notion that many fans think Michael Vick gives the Eagles the best chance to win right now at quarterback. He doesn’t really care.

“I can’t please everybody,” he said. “I know that. I’m here to make the decision that is right for the team … I think it’s a beautiful situation. I’ve got two quarterbacks that can play and a third young one that I think down the road here will be a good one at a very important position … I’m a happy guy.
