Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (1 Viewer)

I had to laugh today, @New Binky the Doormat - I randomly was at Wal-Mart today in the electronics, and even there was a record of Todd's mug staring at me. I don't think I'd ever seen the album until this draft, and then randomly sitting there at Wal-Mart.
I didn't realize Walmart still sold music
They seem to have more LPs than they do Blurays at most stores, and I can't tell you how much that annoys me. ;)

I just walked over to the Stone Pony Box office (with my dog) today and picked up a ticket to see friend of the thread Dinosaur Jr.

Should be great in that venue. It’s inside so like 900 capacity. $37 and no fees at box office so not bad at all

I’ve only seen him solo acoustic as J. Mascais at Maxwells in Hoboken years ago.

Bring your ear plugs. They are great live but possibly the loudest show I've ever attended.

Loaded up the few playlists I saw in the thread that weren't on the spreadsheet, and I am slowly working on the rest of them and adding them in. I am getting Chicagofied and confused though.

There’s an area where you can walk outside - and it will still be warm then - but thanks. It’s small inside so it gets loud. Have seen a few “loud” bands in there like Drive-By Truckers and Reverend Horton Heat so will expect something like that.

I was popping in to advise the exact same thing as Marco. I've seen DBT a ton and they're definitely loud, but Mascis is a whole 'nother level - i mean like a literal wall of amps.

Anybody remember Buy & Sell used CD shops about 20-25 years ago? I picked up quite a few gems and turds. Fun times.

We had a record store that would buy used records. I would take a bunch of my parents' old records and sell them so I could buy comic books. Pretty sure I sold some original Beatles or other classic rock records I'd kill to inherit now. :scared:

@Zegras11 I got through a chunk, but there are 7 more playlists to get to. I listed them in the spreadsheet and filled in as I went so I knew who was left or anybody else could do a couple if they popped in.

Mole's record store on Calhoun in Cincinnati. I would work all summer, go back to school in the fall and spend all the disposable income I had on used cd's at Mole's record store off campus.

Unfortunately it closed earlier this year.

I've been doing a ton of listening, but not posting. Home sick today, so I will catch up on the 2nd part a bit.

I didn't listen to all 100 of @Galileo 's Kinks songs, but surprising to me I did want to explore more which is saying something compared to my opinion of them from just a few years ago. They still don't 100% click with me, but what I did underestimate is their diversity and sense of humor. I made the mistake of writing them off a bit because I didn't love their late 60s/early 70s output, and that's what I largely see people talking about. No surprise, because I seem to be saying it a bit this exercise, you reeled me in with the late 70s/80s stuff. Absolutely loved I think all the songs on your 31 from that era. Heart of Gold was the first that really cracked the ice, then the trifecta of Destroyer, A Well Respected Man, and Catch Me Know I'm Falling sealed the deal for the rest of the way. Long story short, I don't know WTF I was thinking or where my negative impression of The Kinks comes from. I went from groaning a bit when I saw the artists being picked to now along with the Doves, it being a band I am listening to every album of when I am done with playlists. There are still a handful of songs that don't do it for me at all, and now my guess is that's mostly just a couple hits that are overplayed and sound on a popular album or two that I don't normally click with - but I am really looking forward to listening and finding out. Thank you!

Glad you are enjoying some of it. Good luck getting through the albums. They have quite a few...24 studio albums plus 4 or 5 live albums. It will keep you busy for a while.

Elliot Smith was another artist I had formed an impression of and didn't explore because of it. Not that it was negative, I really liked the songs I had heard, it was just that "Good Will Hunting" sound (how I coded it in my head), and that is something I am rarely in the mood for large doses of. @tuffnutt introduced me more to the rockin' side and I liked that a lot too. The Heatmiser tunes were great, and I really liked the sound of L.A. and Son of Sam from the solo stuff. Alameda was another great new-to-me song. Thanks for the playlist - I will definitely explore more, but it might have to be in the form of your playlist or making one myself to break up the more weighty songs.

You haven't been paying attention to my abundance of time on my hands and obsessive nature. I will knock that **** out in a couple days. ;)

I know there have been songs on various of playlists over the years from Ryan Adams, but at the start of this if you asked me to name a song or describe his sound I couldn't. All I knew was that he was Pheobe Bridger's ex that she flames. Broken record in this adventure, but because of the wide range of styles this was another artist that was hit and miss with me, but the hits were amazing. I think I have played Follow the Lights 50 times now. When the Stars Go Blue was another stand out for me, as was Kim. I liked all on @Dr. Octopus ' playlist from Love is Hell and Follow the Lights, so I wrote those down to listen to after playlists. Looks like the 2nd is just a shorter EP? Thanks for the playlist!.

ETA: Oh, I forgot to call out To Be Young as well. Great song. Dylan sound with a tolerable voice? ;)

Queen was a band I've been liking more and more as I listen. On my own in the last decade I'd been digging into their older stuff and sound, but I loved that @snellman 's list had a lot of new-to-me songs from the 80s that I hadn't bothered with. For starters, there were a couple songs I already loved but I never made the connection that it was Queen - I Want It All and One Vision. One Vision was one of the bigger "WTF??" of all these playlists - really brought me back. All the songs on the playlist from The Miracle were A+ tracks to my ears, so my homework to myself is to start with that album and work backwards through their 80s albums now. I'm looking forward to your Part 2 playlist. Thanks for the 80s Queen, snellman!

There was not much new to me from @Hov34 's Spoon playlist, but since it was great - it was a heavy reminder to me (and others, judging from the posts) to get them in my core rotation. I didn't listen to the playlist again, but it's another band I wrote down to listen to all their albums again. So I started with one that I remember being one of my favorites - Girls Can Tell. You nailed a lot of the album highlights on your list. My favorite part of the album is the 1-2 punch of The Fitted Shirt/Anything You Want. I probably listened to that combo a dozen times now. To me it's still a great album top to bottom, and besides the other from here on your playlist I really like This Book Is a Movie and Believing is Art. Anyway, thanks for the great playlist and reminder to listen to more Spoon.

I wasn't going to listen to the playlist again, but I will heap some more praise on @higgins for the Rush playlist that was assembled. I pick on them because it's fun to do so, but I wouldn't bother if it didn't come largely from a place of love and respect. Yes, I agree with the masses a bit that Geddy's voice and the literal lyrics can be a bit much, but I still largely like them it's just not a band I listen to for huge stretches. I'm not sure if it was you or somebody else that posted the quote that hit home - you might not love Rush, but it's a good bet your favorite band does. Something like that? So I think for myself and many others Rush becomes a band that you consume in small doses, but largely through the bands you love, as I hear the influences all over the place when I put on a Rush album. Which is what I did this morning - I play on Power Windows. I was looking at all of their albums, and it seems only this and Hold Your Fire I never got to. As a whole, I really dug the album top to bottom. It starts off with a bang - The Big Money and Grand Designs are a good 1-2. Manhattan Project was decent, but was one of the first on the album when I was eyerolling slightly at the building Rushiness, but was still digging it. The highlight is the combo of Territories/Middletown Dreams that you had on the playlist. Middletown is a new favorite of mine from them. I think Geddy's voice really blends well with that sound, especially when it mixes with the higher synth tones on the chorus. Good stuff - thanks for the playlist! Is Hold Your Fire worth a listen, or should I quit while I'm ahead here?

Aimee Mann appears on Hold Your Fire. Make of that what you will.

I don't know if it is the case or not, but I think our generation didn't appreciate Queen's music. They were considered an "Old band" that our parents listened to and we were getting into the 80s techno sound, hip hop and rap. IMO, their later albums were some of their best and don't get the recognition they deserve. I hope you enjoy Kid rock because he is a sound that you either love or hate and I don't fault anyone that doesn't like him because it is a very different sound.

Anything You Want is such a ****ing good song.

He wrote that about his ex-girlfriend. I spent many a days mooning over an unrequited love with that one.

If there's anything you want
Come on back cause it's all still here
I'll be in the back room drinking my half of the beer
And if you and me is so right
Why's it the same thing every night

I'm not a fan of Hold Your Fire -- I liked Power Windows a lot more.

Go through Dinosaur Jr. playlist - I've been familiar with him and his music for many years, I mostly only really listened to two albums. This is only a slight negative but I will say most of the songs start sounding very similar after a while, not much variety in the sound. With that said, Mascas is a master of the guitar and he creates such a chaotic and intense sound - it's some powerful stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks. Favorite Songs: "Thumb" and "Mind Glow".

Next up: Frank Black (which is already off to an amazing start with "21 Reasons").

Dino Jr. definitely seems to be one of those "the sound is more important than the songs" bands. I think one of the reasons that Thumb is a favorite is that it sounds so different from their usual stuff.

Since others are mentioning recent playlists, here's a few I've been enjoyed.

"Ship of Fools" and "Darker" were the songs that (most) convinced me to push the playlist for Doves high in priority. Though also really like "Kingdom of Rust" and the two songs ("Catch the Sun" and "Here Comes the Fear") that I rather recognized but didn't really connect.

Elliott Smith was also fairly recent. Early favorite is "Alameda", but also really liked "Needle in the Hay", "Miss Misery" and "Waltz #2", not necessarily in that order.

Also listened to The Decemberists while in a draft. "The Mariner's Revenge Song" will certainly have a place in my heart and memory. But top spots so far go to "O Valencia", "Valerie Plame" and "Make You Better". "Midlist Author" is sticking with me pretty well too.

I plan to go through some more playlists over the Labor Day weekend whenever I need a breather from working on my own next list. I'll probably stick with reporting the more unfamiliar artists here. As much as I could go through the ones from (say) ELO or Green Day and highlight 2/3rds of the songs as ones I love. Not to say that I don't (/didn't) also listen to those....
