Middle Aged Dummies!! Artists #1's have been posted!! (7 Viewers)

Prodigy 29/28 - I'd not listened to too much of their music post-Always Outnumbered prior to pulling together this list, at least not for some time, so I was surprised to hear quite so many tracks off The Day Is My Enemy where I thought "that's decent, I'll put that in", and we get back to back tracks with Destroy and Roadblox. The album is generally a lot heavier than previous albums, being more band-focussed and typically described as violent, which doesn't seem too far wrong to me - I think this is the album I've used the most in the 31

📍pretty sure i'm marked safe from being told a certain artist should be credited with the inspiration for the slide Bauhaus tossed on the floors with "Dancing" - but, ya never know.

i'm also fully expecting a finger wag on just who invented punk, and on who were the insipration for goff, before we hit the top 5s - cuz, well, ya know ... maybe even the godtfather of black metal, to boot, will be revealed.

edumication!!!!!!

😵‍💫

learn me!

The other day I said the Albern song sounded like Elvis Costello. This Blur song sounded like Bowie to me. I guess that all kind of makes sense.
With this song if some one had said it was a Bowie outtake placed on one of his greatest hits album as an extra, I would have believed it. Liked the song a lot.

Brief thoughts on the 28s
A few bands that I've liked so far but who have escaped mention and the 28s were my favorite so far:

Decemberists/Raincoat Song - I keep hearing Frank Turner, just more refined and with more melody
Kinks/Have Another Drink - fun song
Sigur Ros/Isjaki -
Stranglers/Meninblack - don't know wtf that was all about but I'm all in
Tragically Hip/Poets - I had written off TH thanks to strongly disliking the one song I heard from them on the radio at some point in the early 90s. I misjudged.
Warren Zevon/Dirty Life and Times

A few bands already mentioned:

Modest Mouse/World at Large - ♥️
Trail of Dead/Insatiable - wow. I liked the previous tracks but this is the one that would convince me to go buy their records.
Rush/Witch Hunt - the second Rush song I ever heard (it was the b-side to the Tom Sawyer 45). I was 8, so didn't really get it till I bought Moving Pictures years later. One of my favorite Rush songs.
Daft Punk/Lose Yourself - Like the lower BPMs on this one. Funky.
Ryan Adams/My Winding Wheel - this is the Ryan Adams I know and love.
Stevie Wonder/Don't You Worry... - not much to add that hasn't already been said.
Ray Charles/The RIght Time - As with Stevie, what can I really say about Mr. Charles?

And the 27s

Decemberists/We All Die Young - the 28 was my favorite till I heard #27. Guess that's how this whole thing is supposed to work
Trail of Dead - All Who Wander
Rush/The Pass - My favorite song from Presto. Glad to see it make an appearance.
Green Day/Knowledge - Fun
Big Thief/Forgotten - realized I forgot to call them out for #28 too, but jeez, how did I miss them. This is a right-in-my-wheelhouse band.
Ryan Adams/NY, NY - haven't looked it up, but was this Ryan's biggest (only?) hit? Always loved it, but not my favorite on the record.
AC/DC/TNT - Bon Scott just brings so much sleaziness and TNT drips with it. And I mean that in the best way possible.
Spoon/No Bullets Spent - My favorite of the really good Spoon entries so far.
Tragically Hip/So Hard Done By - I can liking the Hip more and more as well.
Bauhaus/Dancing - There's one of those killer post-punk basslines
Deadmau5/Seeya - Absolutely love this one.

My notebook might not be up to date as I had a list that was expecting:
  • Porcupine Tree
  • Donald Fagan
  • BTO
  • Beyonce
  • ZZTop
  • Taylor Swift
  • Les Claypool

Did some drop out? Change artists? Other than ZZTop and DF/Steely Dan I don't think I'd know 31 songs combined from the other artists. Was looking forward to some insight into them.

The Hold Steady “Realistic” Dream Setlist Song 5: Constructive Summer

Raise a toast to St. Joe Strummer
I think he might’ve been our only decent teacher
Getting older makes it harder to remember
We are our only saviors
We’re gonna build something this summer

Album: Stay Positive (1 of 5)

Year: 2008

# of Times Seen Live: 35 of 36 shows (only counting shows since the album was released)

The Story: Unlike the earlier entries in the setlist, Constructive Summer is an absolute anthem - maybe THS at their most Springsteen-esque. It also fits beautifully into the whole Hold Steady narrative regarding the power of music/the scene to bring everyone together. As zilla noted, it’s the lead track off Stay Positive, an amazing record in its own right and the close of a blistering four album run. This one gets played at practically every show and always get the crowd bouncing. THS shows tend to have a lot of ‘choreographed’ engagement between Craig and the crowd (for better or worse) and Constructive Summer is undoubtedly in the “for better” camp. Lots of raised fists, spilled beers, and toasting Joe Strummer.

Musical References:

Husker Du: the song itself is an ode to Celebrated Summer
Iggy Pop: Me and my friends are like, the drums on ‘Lust for Life.’
Dillinger 4: Me and my friends are like, ‘Double Whiskey, Coke, No Ice!!!”
Joe Strummer: the above-mentioned Raise a toast to Saint Joe Strummer

Bonus Video: Constructive Summer with Frank Turner (Live in Brooklyn)

I know not everyone turned in the full 31 songs, so some of those at least are still to come.

Me and my friends have drank ourselves silly to Doublewhiskeycokenoice during a hot summer with no prospects and the same attitude and without even the Hold Steady having sanctified it.

Funny how that works.

God save Otis Redding cuz you know he's dead and gone
And the stink falls from my mouth as we sing this song
Is it cigarettes and coffee now or dreams to be remembered
I'll forget myself for dead and sing a long
Now I'm reaching or the phone I don't want to be alone
And I got some friends here tonight
Gotta a basement full of booze and some blues to lose
I'll ignore the whole world tonight it'll be all right.

That's not a knock on the Hold Steady, by the way. It just is the case that we're part of a weird punk rock tradition embodied in a punk-esque/bar sing-a-long-esque song about America.

I'll take it.

I had Springsteen there, but that's lazy and not exactly how the band sounds, really.

Fagen and Swift will come later - didn’t list 31 songs. I believe the rest never submitted list.

Val came in and said he couldn’t get to ZZ Top.

BAUHAUS - DANCING

probably NOT ripped from a certain other artist featured here, but - yeah, we just indulging proclamations at this point, so, eff it - i'm sure i'll be "corrected"

anyways ...

this is a wiggle and and a wham from these bastids - the bass line (will prolly be told it were stolen from Nile Rodgers) is kicking you straight in the face - Danny's guitar excursions here are pretty emblematic of the best he aped off Levene, then crafted into his own sonic, shadowy web.

i don't believe this are derivative, but, if it are, it are from outfits who were mining likewise - seriously, there were a gaggle of mofos indulging in this kinda dance floor riot - the lads i feature here are from COTdamn Northampton - talk about "factory towns" (from the previous 'All We Ever Wanted Was Everything', which only the in tuned @simey deducted, good on ya!)

this will kick yer f****** teef in - yeah, they got this s*** nastier than the Sisters/Cure/Sioxuxsie ever couldt ... this is some serious whack a mole on yer tootsies - and an original spin on the genre by the cork knockin' progenitors - save it, buddy.

goodt LAWD if i chose Specimen ... or Bathory.

how you doin'?

My #27 reactions
(These come off like Joe Bryant’s Random Thoughts)

Utopia - this was new to me and great, right in my wheelhouse

Brandi Carlisle - was this taken straight from one of those really long old FBG threads that I could never understand? Yo Mama is a Werewolf?

Stevie Ray Vaughan - love the jazzy vibe to this. Never heard anything like this from him.

Decembrists - I really liked this but some of the music reminded me of that Gary Glitter song.

Trail of Dead - another great song. Vocals totally gave me Social Distortion memories

Chicago - LOVED this. I’ll definitely be revisiting this tonight after certain things kick in.

Visit Bryant Boats for all your boating needs

Doves - fantastic again

Foos - this is exactly the song I’d be listening to while hanging out with friends in the backyard

Stevie Wonder - what a great showcase of his vocals

Ryan Adams - it makes sense that in a song about New York, I get strong Billy Joel vibes in some parts

Hold Steady - great summer anthem

Other new to me highlights (many of these my favorites of their lists so far) - Frank Black, Dino Jr, Alice In Chains, Prodigy, Deadmau5, Bauhaus, Tragically Hip

Other known favorites - Police, Modest Mouse, Spoon, ELO, ACDC

Great list everyone!

Big Thief continues not disappointing. (y)
Glad you are enjoying them so much. I’m curious what you will think of the next song- it’s kind out of left field for them.

you know i'm thoroughly enjoying Big Thief ... but i'm just waiting for the curtain to be pulled on them being derivative, too ... we'll see.

I'M ROOTIN' FOR YA/THEM!
Not sure if you will ultimately find them derivative or not but they have a few more gears that haven’t come up yet.

i'm not the one calling out "derivative" in this thread - i find them to be a welcome breath of cigs stained air, and i'm loving it.

woulda never heard of them without ya - so, thank you 👍

Ahhhh I surely missed something somewhere. Glad to share. I’m enjoying Bauhaus and look forward to their playlist. Not quite what I usually listen to but I like them. I guess that’s the beauty of this little exercise.

Uruk, I suppose I can be forgiven for the totally different vibe those two lyrics give off.

Because he's dead and gone

Because he's never gone

Oof. My bad.

you always bring the quality, friend ... whether it's flix or tunes - i appreciate it very much.

my advice on the 'haus would be to wait til after the reveals are complete - it ain't much of a catalog, but it are deep and dark and delicious.

I always feel a disturbance in The Force whenever Redding's name gets referenced, good or bad.

Yeah, it was always my favorite part of that song. Those are the actual lyrics.

And it's also "I'll leave regrets for dead and sing along," IIRC. Not "I'll forget myself for dead."

My original lyrics are much more morbid than the actual ones, autocorrect.

Man can I ever butcher some lyrics up in this jernt.

I love me a good collaboration. That video really only begins to show the energy of a THS show.
If you haven't seen them yet and have a chance to do so, don't miss the opportunity.

Prodigy #27 - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned is often seen as a weaker link in the Prodigy's catalogue, and yeah, it's definitely not their strongest work, but I think it's mostly seen unfavourably for a few reasons. The seven year period after the release of The Fat of the Land created an enormous amount of hype, which was never really fulfilled, the only things being released in the interim period was a mix album from Liam and one single which didn't end up getting onto the album (or, for that matter, the 31), so the wait didn't help. The album was also extremely different from previous material, and You'll Be Under My Wheels would not sound recognisable as the Prodigy for anyone that's only ever heard previous stuff without context. This might be recognisable as having been used in an advert for BMW, but I don't know if that was only used in certain territories, there's enough here to get a spot just inside the top 30

oooooh, i'm sure somebody influenced this - just like everything else ...

☹️

Nice work studs!

BTW, it was on the tip of the brain what We All Die Young reminded me of and you nailed it with Rock 'n' Roll (Part 2) (included here for comparison sake)
Reminded me of Spirit in the Sky

You’ve got a friend in Decembrists.

So, uh, I’m in the ER. My stomach hasn’t been right for about a month. On Thursday I went to the doctor who prescribed omeprazole and said to call back if I developed chills or a fever. Tonight I got both. The doctor on call said to go to the ER in case it’s an appendix or gallbladder issue.
Sending healing vibes your way, Pip. Be well.

If it's been going on for a month then it's not acute appendicitis. Gallbladder, definitely possible, along with a few other things.

Best wishes and I hope they figure it out soon.

Best wishes, sorry to hear about this. Hopefully it’s something that can be fixed easily and will get you feeling well again.

Thanks. It’s weird, I’d be in intense pain and then the next day I’d be fine. It seemed to me to be tied to what I ate but that could just be my perception.

I do wonder if there is a stone. My mother has a history of them.

They are going to admit me and perform a CT scan.
