Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (1 Viewer)

I think a rose would be perfect, maybe a Rhone grenache
I'm a fan of grenache, and usually it is a wine from Spain. Recently I bought a French red blend from Gerard Bertrand at Costco, and it was good. It's a mixture of grenache, syrah, and carignan.

In Spain, it is referred to as Garnacha. And they make a ton of good ones

Oh wait, with Sweet Jane gone, this is easy.  I have only three remaining happy-greens in this segment and a whole lotta angry-reds.  Might as well go for my favorite song from one of my favorite artists.

6.06  Leonard Cohen - Suzanne (#284)

@rockaction

This is funny. This is the song I thought you thought I might pick, and I almost did. I did not save it for you benevolently, as I was going to pick "Sweet Jane" but got sniped.

I'll pick in a second.

I owe you my speeding ticket story. I was in the right mood yesterday after beating it, but not so much today.

Also, I've been being that guy who stares at his tablet while visiting others. Need to stop.

Also also, I need to pair wine with smoked trout, spinach and mac nut pizza. My sister's creation. She thinks I know more about wine than I do. I'm thrown by the trout. I'm thinking rose of oregon pinot, or a much dryer french rosey.
I'm way late to the game, but I think a rose would be terrific.  But with the smokiness of the trout, I think I'd even go slightly sweeter/fresher with a dry Riesling.

I asked OH and he immediately said Australian syrah/shiraz, because of the pepper in the wine and that it's acidic enough to cut through the smokiness and oiliness of the trout.

ETA:  I then told him my choice and he thinks that would be great, too.

This is the roots/dancehall reggae to go with The Clash that I mentioned. I'm essentially picking this as a pair, with this to come first on the playlist. It's the number one dancehall song all-time according to Pitchfork and samplers everywhere. The song itself samples "Stalag 17" and features Sister Nancy singing over it, using the chorus from a song by The Maytals released around 1966.

Her particular voice in this song has been sampled by Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna in their "Famous" off of The Life Of Pablo, and has been interpolated (meaning the melody and pitch and effect the same, only using one's own voice) by Lauryn Hill in Lost One, among others.

Bet you guys either knew that song and figured it'd go really, really late, or aren't familiar with it. I'd encourage a two-minute go at listening to it. Her voice is angelic over the ryhthm laid down.

Ohhhh, that makes perfect sense.  Thanks, even though not benevolent.  ;)

I was unfamilar with (or forgot) who Bertrand was. From the blend I was certain it was a Rhone blend, although they are more likely to replace the Carrigan with Pouvedre.Anyway I started gGoogling and Betrand is from Languedoc on the Mediterranean. His story and business is fascinating and now I really really want to go there. Thanks for the rabbit hole!

@krista4 thanks for fixing the text justification in column F of the Draft Sheet tab. Those couple of fields with right justification were driving me crazy.
I'd love to take credit, but it's been driving me insane and I didn't want to mention it for fear of being too, ummm, persnickety.  I didn't know how to fix it and don't know who did.

Beer......like a nice Czech pilsner

I'm a man of my convictions and when I posted this list to the FFA, I followed it up in the second post by saying this song was too low at #20 overall. I do think it's the best song of the last 15 years or more and I do think its place on the list is 100% deserved. I realize a lot of people will listen to it and think it's just another dumb pop song but the great big layered synth intro, the sad-pop perfection lyrics, the soaring chorus (and the "Machine Gun" like effects behind the chorus) all by far set it apart for me.

It has only gained in status and popularity since it's release, hell it never even charted in the USA but it found its way near the top of this list. It is undeniably a gay anthem but it's also an everyone anthem. I've seen it covered by Canada's best rock band, it gets played at my local by the acoustic guy, and it has so many moments like this that pop up all over the place and make me so happy.

So basically, this song is incredible, if I could only have one, I don't know if I'm taking this or Mr. Brightside from the list but I could wait a little on this one.

6.08 - Dancing On My Own - Robyn (#20)

I'm forming a pretty long list of new-to-me stuff to listen to.  Thanks for the great write-ups that make me wish to listen.

I clicked on Canada's best Rock band and it wasn't The Tea Party so I was confused.

5.24 - Earth, Wind & Fire - "September" (#65)

####in love this jam, and it'll nicely fit my pleasant dance party desert island.

This makes the first artist on my list that I've ever seen live.  Doesn't help that 3/4 of my previous picks are dead, and who knows where Gladys Knight is.

Either way, this song slaps.
Three thoughts:

1.  This song is an epic jam.
2.  I wouldn’t even fantasize about trying to do Phillip Bailey in karaoke.
3.  EW&F taking this song and releasing it as a Christmas song by just changing every reference to “September” into “December” is the most delightfully shameless money grab I’ve ever seen.

This would have been my first pick out of the top 25.   It’s a perfect pop song.

Listened to it for the first time earlier today. I did not reap similar emjpyment, but I will give it a couple of re-listened, due to my respect for your taste,

If that doesn't work, I'll listen to the Guess Who cover you mentioned.

Bumbaclaat, man.

I had back-pocketed that one for later...always loved it.

I keep forgetting to look for a remote until late at night. I know it is around here somewhere. It is really small. I am one of those people that needs white noise to help me sleep, and so I've used a fan for decades. A friend gave me a fan with a remote a few years ago for Christmas. I love it. It is one of the best presents I have ever gotten. I recommend it for light sleepers out there.

I saw Kiss and Motley Crue in the early 00s. They worked well together but holy #### were Kiss way way way better live (and I'm more a Motley Crue fan on record)
I grew up on Kiss and Crue....Kiss has always been about the music.  Simmons and Stanley are shrewd and good at what they do.....Crue partied waaaaaaaay too much and Vince Neil is a steaming pile of crap.

If I'm not around first thing in the morning, please feel free to update/@ as necessary.  Going to be a busy day.

Also, RA, I'm not leaving until 3 pm, so your afternoon shift can be a bit shorter.  :)
