Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (2 Viewers)

Cultural and media fragmentation has made this impossible now. I guess the closest thing would be the Super Bowl halftime show but The Weeknd is as close as they'll ever have to a breaking act.

Maybe the last thing that came close was Michael Jackson's set at Motown 25 in 1983 or Live Aid two years later.
Oh yeah. I don't think ilov or I would debate that. The difference between Elvis and The Beatles, he meant.

I honestly don't know the difference because I wasn't a culture watcher back then. There must have been shifts, however subtle, that led from one to the other. The things that strikes me is the closeting of female adulation for Elvis vs. the unbridled way in which the teen female audience met The Beatles.

I'm not old enough to know either so I was pontificating about something I did know

Elvis' rise was really meteoric. It was less than a year from his last recording at Sun to his appearance on Sullivan.  I'm sure I've said this before but one of the best Rock 'N Roll books I've read is Last Train to Memphis, the first volume of Peter Guralnick's Elvis bio. It documents the time up to his induction in the Army.  Guralnick found some incredible stories of Elvis' travels through the Southeast as his fame skyrocketed.

Sounds awesome. I used to love accounts like that, back when I was an avid reader. I can imagine the stories. They're probably pretty incredible.

Well, I thought I'd get at least one pick in before I go, but it appears I won't.  Is there anyone who's already done a 7th rounder and will be around all evening?  I'll send my 7th round choices and then check in again along the way to see what to do in the next round, if need be.

The NFL’s halftime show for Super Bowl LVI will feature Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar.

welp.
I haven't watched an NFL halftime show since ........well I can't remember.......we play ladder golf for $$......SB halftime show is for soccer moms who are more interested in the commercials than the game

Then again, we did get the Who just the other year, so Dr. Dre and Eminem are just par for the course, it seems. The Weeknd was a heck of a try but he ran around that maze or something. I don't know. I always, if I'm into the game, change the channel to check the analysis on NFL Network, which has lately come to disappoint greatly, so I suppose the halftime show is in the offing this year.

But I wonder if anybody will be watching but those that will likely be offended, or in addition to them, are looking to be offended

It was twenty years after Sign O the Times came out
Yeah, but I think he played "Purple Rain" in the actual rain, where the purple lighting made it look like...purple rain. Perhaps I'm not picking up what you're putting down and being too literal. It was indeed quite a long way from Sign O The Times.

Purple rain

My point was that Prince was a throwback act too when he performed in 2007.  It's not like he was doing the Super Bowl in the mid-80s.

Although to be fair to the artist, 2007 was right in the middle of his 2000s comeback.  I like Musicology, 3121 and Planet Earth as much as any of his post Sign records.

Gotcha. That took an inference or two I didn't make. Doing research for my Summerpalooza picks and listening to Toronto punk from '77.

This schtick is beginning to be exhausting, but Spotify is keeping up so far. It's...impressive.

Round 6

3 A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke

its bolded on the song list but looks like there was something weird happening on the top of the sheet. I searched the first page and didn’t see it taken. A song that’s both beautiful but also an anthem for a movement. Songs don’t get much bigger or better than this.

@landrys hat up

you can skip me on the next pick, I have a meeting in a few

there are 10 songs left in the TOP tier. Only one other would I deem worthy if I don't go with Aretha here
Here it is

Planet Earth should be called Chelsea Rogers and a bunch of other songs I don’t remember.  Like Musicology and really like 3121.

What is the deal with the rest of the Television songs?  They are a really good overall band or more of a 1 hit wonder?
The whole first album is really good. Smoke some pot before you listen to it. As the hype sticker on the record says, it's "jazz for the punk rock set." Lots of jammy goodness there. I think you'd presonally really appreciate it. Just go into it with the mindset that it's not your typical '77 punk rock record. At all. It bends genres. They were really just a house band looking for a place, which is how they became the house band at CBGB's, really. I found it really late. It's fantastic.

Good overall band but Tom Verlaine isn't a great singer.

I even kind of like their 90s reunion album too. It's self-titled so you'd probably hate it.

Still need this.  Currently waiting for a ferry and listening to my awesome 7th rounder that someone could post when it comes up?

I love “Guiding Light”- my favorite song on the album.

I know I’m up, give me a few minutes

#166 Mott the Hoople “All the Young Dudes”

Still some great choices left in this group of songs  but I went with this wonderful anthem by David Bowie:

And my brother’s back at home with his Beatles and his Stones

Such a great line. And I love Ian Hunter at the end:

Hey dude! I want you. I want you in the front!

@Yo Mama
