Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (5 Viewers)

He reminds me of Dylan and Springsteen. There is some serious polarity of people who absolutely worship them and people who can't stand them. Seems to be something that just doesn't work at all for  a lot of people.
I definitely dig Dylan.....not all, but he's got a lot of classic tunes.  I've never been into Springsteen at all.....course I'm a west coast coast guy.  He's like an east coast thing

Only three pristine groupings left:  51-75, 276-300, 401-425.  I guess this means we think these are the strongest collections?

There are some groups where I really like at least one song that I think I'll be able to wait on so I haven't picked from them.  Strategery.

ETA:  But I just checked and I do think two of those three groups are indeed pretty strong.

Ok... love this tune regardless, but outside of one or maybe two others, not digging the rest of the group. One of my favorite riffs.

2- Motörhead – Ace Of Spades  #442
This was one of the 3-4 I liked from this group too. Going to take my #1 from this group before it's too late and I have to do actual research. Would probably be in my top 100-125.

Round 2

Blue Oyster Cult-(Don't Fear) The Reaper

I tried Costello.......Maybe I'll revisit another time, but wasn't feelin it this AM.  His voice is constant, and kinda just not pleasing to my ears.....maybe not a good choice for first thing in the morning??
Costello should always be who's on first.

My round 2 pick:

# 26 Joni Mitchell- “A Case of You”

I love this song, very much. I have no idea what it’s doing ranked this high. 26th best song of all time? It’s not even the best song on the ####### album! (That would be Blue, by the way.) As much as I adore it, “Carey”, “California”, “This Flight Tonight”, “Old Man” are all probably better, and “River” and the title tune are probably as good. So I don’t really get it.

But- it was in the second grouping and it’s my favorite song left in that grouping, so following my totally lame strategy, it’s my selection.
Does it feel weird to be poking fun at a song rankings list as opposed to defending it?

I thought that was strange too.

1 because it's not even his best song

And 2- he's someone I'd expect RS to be high on as an artist

Exactly.  Alison is a great song, but not in my top 20 from him.

Wouldn't surprise me if Costello, Clapton, and Van Morrison didn't get a little markdown for their anti-shutdown shenanigans.

Hadn't thought of that.  Could be.  For Clapton, could also be that he's a hack.

It could also be that their music hasn't aged well. I like about four songs combined from this trio.
I think their music aged well but they were never as popular/big as The Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Prince, etc. Considering those top acts are going to get a bunch of songs on the list and RS wants to break up the songs to cover so much ground, it just means secondary or tertiary acts are only going to be able to get 1 or 2 songs on the list. It is pretty shocking that Brown Eyed Girl didn't make the top 500 though.

biggest hits and most popular song seems really significant to making the list.
Yea it makes sense.

So many examples of great songs being left off though.  I'm a huge Floyd fan.....how the hell does Time not make the list?  Nothing from Darkside of Moon?  Really?

Yeah maybe it's not aging and it's just that the production of certain 70s acts grates on me like drums do Eephus in the 90s.

I always feel like Van is yelling at me and Clapton's guitar is turned up ten times higher than anything else around it.

I'm a certified Clapton hater from way back.  I'm not the kind of guy who digs into an album like My AIm is True or Astral Weeks, but I like EC's and Van's greatest hits stuff as much as the next guy.  Radio, Radio and Wild Night are both fun singles.  But again, this is hard.  I'm sure everyone would hate my list (where Let it Whip by the Dazz Band would be like number 22) way more.

I'd have no problem with that placement. That record smokes.

It's not his best song, but it is one of my favorites, so I'm glad it was one of the 25 songs in that grouping. It's the first song I ever heard from him. I liked it instantly. My sister's best friend's brother had the album, and her bff snuck the album over to the house, and the first song she wanted to play for us was Alison. I loved it.  This was around '78. My sister's bff was the neighborhood bully in the 70s.  She would ride around on her ten speed bike shooting the bird at everyone in her path. She locked a neighborhood child inside a recreation sports box down at the park.  At Brownies she tied a girl to a tree and tossed rocks at her.  She was something. She grew up to be a nicer person, but a bit weird. Her and my sister are still buds, but live in different states.

Eephus would disagree.

I'm not a huge Springsteen fan like someone who's seen him live 100 times.

His music meant a lot to me at one point in my life but we've kind of drifted apart since them.  I still listen to his music but I do that with a lot of artists.

I couldn't find him in my contacts at first. That's because I was looking under his slave name. I finally found him & texted.

First name: Binky

Last name: Doormat

I do this, too.    I just looked at my contacts and saw, as an example, that I have FBG gadzooks (who's been MIA around here for years) as first name "Gad" and last name "Zooks".

OK.  This is probably the one song that I kind of have to get.  Next round maybe I'll start looking outside my comfort zone.  Is it the greatest come-on song of all-time?  I believe that it is.  But more importantly, it has spent a tidy 25 years as my certified #1 karaoke JAM.  I'm an OK to middling karaoke singer, but with this song?  I have produced triumphs.  From being called "Marvin" by a Vault 10 firm's managing partner.  To winning over a full redneck bar (where I had, ironically, been challenged to a fight for ragging on Clapton), to winning over the crowd at @fatguyinalittlecoatand his wife's party.  Like Linus with his security blanket, just give me:

2.18 (No. 264) -- Let's Get It On -- Marvin Gaye

I thought you were fond of him since you had a draft theme in the past centered around him.

I can confirm that scooby's version was so hot that just the memory of it probably kept my marriage going a few years longer than it should have.
