Seriously. Could have used you then. The comments were a little definitive. I had been listening to Eight Miles High, checking out their history, and thought "maybe I'll stir up the FFA a bit"

Considering that I was just perusing my old topics and found "The Novelity (sic) of Women Writing About Women On Women: A Handless Salute," we can safely assume I was in my cups for that period of time. But it is a title that didn't get enough love, IMO.

382 - Paper Bag / Fiona Apple

During the 23 hours between picks, I listened to every available song in this tier and except for maybe  Merle's best song (big deal), this is the only one I liked.

It was the first time I ever listened to it. Excellent lyrics and style, even if it did seem like one really long run-on sentence,

It's off of an album I thought was great back when it came out. Most people hated it. I thought it was pretty perfect for undergoing the depression I was going through, with the attendant drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and career loss.

Sort of a nice soundtrack to that.

But there's no denying its quality as art. Produced by Jon Brion, who would score P.T. Anderson movies (Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love) and then go on to produce Kanye's Late Registration, which was quite the thing at the time.

Sticking with this theme of mine and only picking songs that I karaoke is going to be near impossible. I’ll sing almost anything but there are a couple of brackets that only have one left that I’ve ever tried. I’ll stick with it as long as I can and take this early 80’s classic.

I hated this song for so long when I listened to "classic rock radio" I think it was just so out of place to me from all The Doors, Rush, Led Zeppelin and Eagles and all that other stuff it was played alongside.

Years later, I still think it's out of place alongside that stuff, because it's SO MUCH BETTER. (And I've gone very deep into Talking Heads in general and love them, but 15 year old NV was not having it).

 
So how did I miss Jeff Buckley?  That's one of the cool things about doing this stuff......learning new (to you) artists.

I mean I knew who Buckley was, but I always just overlooked.....never really delved in....well I have been last couple days, and wow.....pretty damn good and kinda right in my wheel house

Talking Heads are a acquired taste for sure.  Not really rock.  Not really pop.  Kinda odd....even nerdy, yet cool all at the same time....they've really grown on me over the years.  Good road tunes.  Or just good background music.

I never saw Talking Heads live but saw David Byrne and his backing band at Bourbon and Beyond festival a couple of years ago. It was raining and the entire band was barefoot and just having a blast playing on the stage for all of us standing in the muck.

Fiona Apple is one of my favorite vocalists.....her voice is sexy as hell!  She's like PJ Harvey lite.....

Did a Banh Mi taste test in Hanoi going to the four top rated ones.   The winner was something called Banh Mi Queen or something.  I’d look it up but drunk and heading home and also no one cares.  The point is, I love Banh Mi.

 
7.24 - Yeezus - "Runaway" (#25)

This was my 1a/1b in the top 25 along with "Be My Baby", so I'll grab it here.  The ballet video is so simple, yet perfect.

I try not to grab repeat selections, especially since I drafted this album in like the 1st or 2nd round in the last draft, but here we are.

This is arguably my favorite Kanye song, this or "All of the Lights".  There's just something about this song.  The self-awareness.  The piano keys.  The unabashed disappointment.  It's really a ####### beautiful song.  It even has a full-length film.  I'm very pleased that it fell to the last 3 songs of the category.  Nothing against Bey or Billie, but this is the pick for me.

For the record, this album is an absolute ####### masterpiece.
