Music Draft - Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Songs Garbage List - Now with unhealthy regional pork-stuffs! (3 Viewers)

I like it more. I think it's his best song. Talking about going to Clipper games. It's a 2hr drive for us, but I've taken my daughter dozens of times. West coast games start at 7pm. End around 10. Post game traffic. A stop at InNOut. We get home around 1am. The highway is high above our desert city in a valley. It is a beautiful sight at night. All the lights below mean we're almost home. Solisbury Hill became a tradition when we head into the valley. Took us home a few dozen times. Lovely song.

I'm disappointed the Sledgehammer didn't make the list, but only because I think it's funny that I had heard that song for 25 years without listening to a single lyric, so I was like 40 before I realized the theme of the song was "I have a big d**k and I know how to use it."

@Doug Bis on permaskip and can pick whenever.
Is this still accurate for pending skips?

12.19: "Don't Leave Me This Way", Thelma Houston (355)

People usually think of this one as pure relentless driving disco beat. And, yeah ... it gets to that for sure. But check out the gradual buildup from the original album version in the link above. Ms. Houston is in total control of every vocal phrase ... up and down, drawing you in and pushing you out, then back in again.

And of course, the bass workout is pure flavah. So good.

The Communards cover is dang near just as good. EDIT: And of course, these guys did it first.

If I might register a plea. Please don't let yourself get skipped too much. I know you guys are busy and have busy lives, but if you build up tons of skips, it's going to fundamentally affect the scarcity aspect of the draft.

I mean, I can't control what you do and I can't possibly know your commitments and needs, so if you need to be skipped, by all means. But if it's just out of shirking it, just pick a song, darn it.

That's the only time I've ever done that in one of these drafts, but I just see it becoming a bit of a problem if it runs amok.

Yes, as far as I can tell.

I know you guys want to move the draft along with the timer and everything but if we slowed things down a little today it might allow the slackers to catch up.
I was thinking something similar. I think the drafting on weekends might have put people behind the eight ball a bit. Maybe we can appeal to slow down the clock for today until everyone gets caught up.

Counterpoint: If you're going to have a clock and expect people to maintain a fast pace on the weekend, I'm going to take the skips and also probably start losing interest

The clock started midway through the weekend and was 2-1/2 hours long.  No one was skipped on the weekend due to a clock timeout, nor did anyone register an objection to having it.  Though obviously we'd rather have you, if you're not interested in staying in, just say so and we'll move along without you.

I'm fine with pausing it.  The only person other than NV who seemed to be affected by the weekend was @the moops, so we're really just waiting for him.  Tasker won't be up again for a long time, so I expect he'll catch up soon and won't be far behind.

Sure. I can see that. I didn't say anything nor pass judgment on people's personal motives or level of interest. And I just said I think people got behind the eight ball this weekend. I know I was away for a bit -- you even Franz Ferdinanded me -- and had to rely on checking my phone, so I can see exactly where that happened.

I'm really sympathetic to that. I figured I should say something before we have no draft or a seriously altered one because of skips, because that's where it's headed if we don't rein that aspect of it in.

I didn't raise the point without having considered other things. The logistics of it are fairly clear though. The scarcity at the end only happens with on-time participation. Man, I don't want to be the heavy. I'm saying what the is is...

I really wanted this instead of Wilco, but I felt like it would stand out oddly in my mix.
Oh , it will on mine too but it was #2 from this tier for me and you took the other one I wanted (Kristofferson) which would’ve stood out as well. 😀

Frankly, it’ll be tough for anyone to not have a song or two that stand out in that way as the scarcity kicks in.

Ohhh, that's right.  I mixed it up with my Wilco pick.  I actually almost did take this instead of the Kristofferson.  Definitely my top two as well.

One of my friends wives is just super into the Foo Fighters.  And I get so much joy just by being kind of lukewarm complimentary of them.  "Oh, I liked the Colour and the Shape well enough, I guess."  "Whatever his merits as a rock star, Dave is certainly a mensch."   "I definitely appreciate Dave for all he's done to get people to pay attention to Bob Mould and Ian Mackaye."

Sets her off much more entertainingly than slamming them.

At one point I probably would have said this was my favourite song ever... that was 15 years or more ago but it still rules. It lends itself well to acoustic covers as well, either by Foo Fighters or random guys with guitars.

11.18 - Everlong - Foo Fighters (#409)
a little dumbfounded it's still there tbh.

one of the best songs of the last 20 years. watched the video for it for the first time during this draft... they definitely had fun making it, and it's a cool vid, but kind of detracts from the tune IMO.

and the moops got back yesterday afternoon, and checked in saying he would try and catch up in the night, but he did not.

Love this song and the Communards cover just as much.

I've consistently been outvoted on this point for a long time now, so I usually just go with the flow, but:

These things, 10-15+ years ago, were meant to be workday diversions. There was typically a clock, and a brisk one at that (an hour was typical). BUT: the clock was off every night and every weekend.

Then there started to be "draft pick creep". If people were OTC and available at night, hey, why not? They'd make the pick. No harm, no foul. But then someone was a pick or two away some evening, and wanted to pick ... and it kind of gradually started snowballing from there.

Something that confounds music drafts a bit is that there's often little downside to getting sniped. I waited until the very end of the recent two-for-one album draft to make my final four selections. Even with punting that many picks that long, I really only got sniped once, and I had a ready backup.

In a lot of the judged drafts (chiefly Timdrafts, but there have been others), usually scarcity is more impactful on the selections, and being skipped a lot does hurt and is thus disincentivized. This draft is somewhere in between ... tastes vary enough that people might feel safe letting the draft slide a few rounds before coming back in to see what's left to take.

I'm surprised this was still on the board.

Dave Grohl is a super talented guy.....instruments, producing, etc....he's all over the place.  For some reason though, I never really got into Foo Fighters.....just ona those bands that I like, but really never go outa my way to listen to.

I just realised that Solisbury Hill is the Peter gabriel song here.  I love the song, but in what universe is it better than In Your Eyes?

In your eyes
The light, the heat (in your eyes)
I am complete (in your eyes)
I see the doorway (in your eyes)
To a thousand churches (in your eyes)
The resolution (in your eyes)
Of all the fruitless searches (in your eyes)
