***Official 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs thread : Pens raise the cup for 4th time in franchise history*** (1 Viewer)

Good game.  Much like the game 1 loss to St. Louis, the Sharks have to look at that game as a constructive loss...lots of good (e.g. adjustments made after the 1st period), but also stuff to correct (e.g. Pittsburgh is going to challenge Justin Braun as he had trouble keeping up with Pittsburgh's top line).

Hockey just so much more exciting to watch than NBA
It is but they need to have games on on different night.   No need to be bored tonight.  Only two good sporting events going right now.

RIP Rick Macleish - you were the first jersey I ever got,  for Christmas in 1978

Back in 1977 he survived a car crash with then teammate Bob Dailey and broke his neck, requiring a body cast. The next year, in a game against the Los Angeles Kings, his neck was cut on a diving play by the skate of Marcel Dionne.

The play happened in the first period and it took the rest of the game for trainers to stich up MacLeish’s neck. He said that his recovery included postgame drinks and cigarettes.

“Joe Watson said there was some smoke and beer coming out of my neck,” MacLeish told the Flyers website in 2005. “I am not sure what it was, but it was definitely something. Around 4 a.m. that morning I woke up and I was bleeding all over the place because the stitches had broken. We called the team trainer and he took me to get new stitches.”

Why the NHL plans to stick with the controversial offside challenge

You want some changes made for next season on the coach’s challenge for offside? Forget it. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman staunchly defended the rule and its enforcement during his annual session with reporters Monday prior to Game One of the Stanley Cup final.
Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said there are no material rule changes planned for next year. General managers meeting in March did not raise any issues with the coach’s challenge. “I don’t think there was this large hue and cry with respect to the offside rule and it needing to change,” Daly said. “I can’t tell you what the opinion might be since then, but I don’t believe currently we’re anticipating any material rule changes going into next year.”

He probably won't end up winning the Conn Smythe, but Bonino has been an absolute stud at both ends this entire playoffs.  Just fantastic.

I'm so used to the Penguins teams of the past several years unraveling mentally but it sure looks like they're in the Sharks heads right now.  San Jose looks completely flustered.

ETA -- But still a lot of time left today and they've got a really hot goalie.

Great win and much like game 1 it was another great all around performance.  Gotta think that San Jose will be a completely different beast Saturday night   :scared:

Going to need the Sharks to hold home ice... Need more pucks, not 4-1/4-0 series.
First two games have made it collectively look like they really don't have anything for the Pens five-on-five, with the exception of the second period of game one.  Sharks are going to need a bunch of power play chances IMO, which they're rather unlikely to get at this stage unless the Pens get really effing stupid.

If there is an expansion draft this summer, what's the most likely scenario of how it would work?

All you have to do is watch Thornton repeatedly cross-check Crosby about the head and not see him retaliate to know there's been an increased level of discipline for the Pens.

Of course, you never know when Geno or Letang will go off the reservation. Because this is a thing...

Probably won't be until next year since Las Vegas will play beginning in 2017-2018. The particulars of dealing with guys that have NMC will need to be worked out.

Yeah, Crosby has grown up a ton -- and I agree that Letang is the guy to worry about.  But in the finals, it really needs to be pretty outrageous to see enough calls to tilt things usually.  For the most part, the refs let them play.

Yeah, there were at least two times I saw San Jose with too many men on the ice. While I don't agree with the "let 'em play" school of thought, I'm realistic enough to know that some things should be called. #1 is delay of game (duh) and #2 is too many men.

don't think probably is necessary. no way they do it this summer.

also, sounds like the NMC stuff has been worked out. players with no-trade clauses can be exposed, but players with no movement clauses will not be.
